BLS: CPI increased 1.0% in May; Core CPI increased 0.6%

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 1.0 percent in May on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.3 percent in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 8.6 percentbefore seasonal adjustment.

The increase was broad-based, with the indexes for shelter, gasoline, and food being the largest contributors. After declining in April, the energy index rose 3.9 percent over the month with the gasoline index rising 4.1 percent and the other major component indexes also increasing. The food index rose 1.2 percent in May as the food at home index increased 1.4 percent.

The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.6 percent in May, the same increase as in April. While almost all major components increased over the month, the largest contributors were the indexes for shelter, airline fares, used cars and trucks, and new vehicles. The indexes for medical care, household furnishings and operations, recreation, and apparel also increased in May.

The all items index increased 8.6 percent for the 12 months ending May,the largest 12-month increase since the period ending December 1981.The all items less food and energy index rose 6.0 percent over the last 12 months. The energy index rose 34.6 percent over the last year, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending September 2005.The food index increased 10.1 percent for the 12-months ending May, the first increase of 10 percent or more since The consensus was for 0.7% increase in CPI, and a 0.5% increase in core CPI.Both were above expectations. I'll post a graph later today after the Cleveland Fed releases the median and trimmed-mean CPI. the period ending March 1981.

False accusations are one of the means used by those who want to eliminate an adversary whom they fear and cannot fight fairly. In this case, I am considered inconvenient both by the exponents of the deep church and the Bergoglian cabal, whose scandals and cover-ups I have denounced since the time of the McCarrick case. And I am equally inconvenient for the deep state, which has been able to count on the complicity of the Holy See as well as almost the entirety of the global Episcopate in the events of the last few years. The dissonant voice of a Bishop, especially when he formulates reasoned complaints based on irrefutable facts, risks putting the official narrative into question, both on the alleged renewal of the Church under this “pontificate” as well as on the pandemic farce and mass “vaccination.” Even the recent Russian-Ukrainian crisis significantly finds the globalist elite, NATO, the American deep state, the European Union, the World Economic Forum, the entire media machine, and the Vatican all aligned on the same side. Putin’s intervention in Ukraine is considered a threat to the New World Order that must be neutralized even at the cost of a global conflict.

Commodity chaos from Ukraine war sends Trafigura to record $2.7 billion profit

Trading house emerged as a winner from market disruption, taking in more than $170 billion in revenue in six months through March. Trading house Trafigura Group rode chaotic moves in commodity markets, worsened by Russia’s war on Ukraine, to score record profit.

The privately held commodities merchant earned $2.7 billion in net profit on $170.6 billion in revenue in the six months through March, it said Friday. Profit was 29% higher than in the same period a year earlier, making Trafigura a winner from a stretch of massive volatility in energy and metal prices. Two-thirds of revenue came from trading oil and other forms of energy.

The results are the first look at how the giant oil and commodities trader fared in the first five weeks of upheaval sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Buyers in Europe and the U.S. shunned Russian oil while India scooped up barrels on the cheap. Sanctions have since barred most of the business that European traders like Trafigura did with Russia’s biggest crude producer, pushing Moscow to find new ways to export oil.

The disruption sent global oil prices soaring, with Brent crude prices hitting a 14-year high of about $139 a barrel in March. The international benchmark has slipped back but remains 70% higher than a year ago at about $123 a barrel. Diesel and gasoline prices keep rocketing to record highs. Trafigura, based in Singapore and run from Geneva, was at the center of the disturbance. It was the biggest Western exporter of Russian oil before the invasion, having struck up a close partnership with state-aligned producer Rosneft PJSC. The company says it has wound down much of that business since war broke out to comply with sanctions imposed by the European Union and Switzerland.

Many traders expect commodity prices to remain high, disrupting the global economy’s recovery from the pandemic and adding to pressure on consumers and businesses from rapid inflation. Stockpiles of metal and energy are low by historical levels and will struggle to meet a sustained rebound in demand, Trafigura said in its half-year report.

Traders such as Trafigura generally don’t bet on the direction of markets. Instead they use sprawling logistical and financial operations to eke out money from gaps in prices between regions, or at different times.

Trafigura has the logistical heft and balance sheet to profit more than most. It handles more than seven in every 100 barrels of oil consumed globally, along with massive volumes of metal, coal, natural gas and other commodities. The company has interests in mining, logistics and industrial-metal operations, and owns a hedge fund. Trafigura is owned by its partners, but bonds issued to finance its sprawling business trade publicly.

The volatility brought challenges. Trafigura, like other traders, relies on borrowed money to finance the commodities its ships around the world. Excluding an African oil subsidiary, Trafigura had $73 billion in credit lines by the end of March from 140 banks, of which $7 billion had been raised over the previous six months.

An outstanding question is the fate of an Arctic oil project into which Trafigura sank 1.5 billion euros, or $1.59 billion, of its own money along with 5.5 billion euros borrowed from a group of banks. The company has frozen its 10% shareholding in Rosneft’s Vostok Oil project and says it intends to sell out. It is likely to incur a loss.

Breaking: Small plane crashes in Oxnard, California strawberry field

"A small plane crashed in a strawberry field in Oxnard Friday, apparently striking several buildings as it went down, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 8 a.m. near the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway near the Del Norte Boulevard exit, according to Ventura County Fire Department Capt. Brian McGrath.

Firefighters said there was one “potential fatality” resulting from the crash, but could not confirm a death. The captain said a K-9 unit was being brought in to examine the wreck.

The crash resulted in a fire that has since been extinguished.

Firefighters said they found part of the plane on the rooftop of a nearby church across the freeway.

Improving cross-border payments with multi-CBDCs

Cross-border payments today can be slow and expensive. Unlike domestic payments, where banks can pay each other directly on a single national payments platform, there is no single international platform today for cross-border payments and settlements.

Instead, the correspondent banking model is used, where banks hold foreign currency accounts with each other. A single cross-border payment could pass through multiple correspondent banks, using the foreign currencies held with them. Each leg of the overall transaction takes time and effort to process, with fees levied that add up quickly and are passed on to customers, resulting in slow and costly cross-border payments.

A multi-currency common settlement platform would enable transacting parties to pay each other in different currencies directly, without the need for intermediaries such as correspondent banks.

Project Dunbar, an international settlement scheme led by the BIS Innovation Hub, has successfully developed working prototypes to prove the viability of the multi-CBDCs concept. It is still early to speculate what this could mean for international settlements. However, if launched successfully, it could significantly challenge the current international transaction providers like SWIFT.

Experiment Proves Multi-CBDCs Could Enable International Settlements

Project Dunbar, a technical experiment that involved the Reserve Bank of Australia, Central Bank of Malaysia, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and South African Reserve Bank, has turned out to be a success, proving that financial institutions can use CBDCs to transact on a shared platform.

The joint effort initially started in 2021. According to a report by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS), the project developed two prototypes for a shared platform that could enable international settlements using CBDCs issued by different central banks, which was the project’s first phase. The BIS said:

“This initial phase of the project successfully developed working prototypes and demonstrated practicable solutions, achieving its aim of proving that the concept of multi-CBDCs was technically viable.”

The BIS argued that the need for such a system arises since cross-border payments are currently very inefficient. For instance, to complete a single cross-border transfer, a number of banks may be involved. Each of these banks would need to record transactions on multiple ledgers on multiple systems built using different technologies, all of which contribute to making transactions slower and more expensive.

Moreover, the bank claimed that cross-border payments currently fail to meet user expectations of cheaper, faster, and more transparent cross-border payments. This describes why the G20, an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union, pledged in 2020 to enhance cross-border payments around the world.

Project Dunbar Developed Using DLT Platforms Corda and Quorum

In terms of design, the project faced challenges related to governance, process, and technology.

For a multi-CBDC platform shared by different central banks, governance is a key consideration to properly assign each participant the right amount of privileges and modes of access. In the first place, participants will gain access to the platform through the nodes they host or the nodes hosted by others. Also, each participant would have a different level of access.

Technologically, the project’s technical prototypes were developed on two different DLT platforms—Corda and Quorum. The Corda platform development was led by the technology provider R3 while the Quorum platform development was led by Partior, an open industry platform.

Moreover, R3’s prototype deployed on the Azure cloud infrastructure while Partior has deployed its prototype on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Multi-CBDC Payments to Challenge Traditional Settlement Methods like SWIFT

Unlike traditional payment settlement methods, which rely on intermediaries and correspondent banks, a multi-CBDC platform would enable participants to transact directly with each other using different CBDCs. This would significantly decrease the time required for a settlement, thus increasing speed.

Moreover, currently, a single cross-border transfer requires multiple ledgers to be updated on different systems, making the process time-consuming. However, since transfers are recorded on a single ledger on a multi-CBDC platform, the settlement process is simplified and costs are reduced.

It is also worth noting that a multi-CBDC platform would reduce duplicative processes and automate operations through smart contracts. Furthermore, using smart contracts, banks can also offer conditional payments, enabling customers to receive payment upon the fulfillment of predefined conditions.

In a nutshell, a multi-CBDC platform could be a game-changer for international settlements considering that it could significantly cut costs and increase speed. Therefore, it can significantly challenge traditional financial transaction providers like SWIFT.

NAVSOC, was the first military space operations command in history, commissioned in Apr. 1962 as the Navy Astronautics Group. Tasked with operating the Navy's satellites, the unit commanded TRANSIT, the world's first satellite navigation system. Navy Astronautics Group was redesignated as NAVSOC in Jun. 1990.

“As we look toward the future of space operations, we see the domain is both crowded and growing,” said Myers. “To lead this next phase of the space race, the United States established the Space Command with the budget and authorities to consolidate joint-capabilities and harness cross-cutting disciplines and services.”

The USSF is a separate and distinct branch of the armed services, organized under the Department of the Air Force in a manner very similar to how the Marine Corps is organized under the Department of the Navy.

“It’s hard to overstate how impactful this mission is and the critical role this team plays in linking the force across air, land, and sea,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander, Space Operations Command. “This activation marks the beginning of the Department of Defense’ consolidation of all narrow-band, wide-band, and protected SATCOM to include all associated responsibilities for training, accusation, and sustainment activities under a single military service for the first time in history.”

In addition to the command operation center, NAVSOC transferred the Laguna Peak Facility (3-miles from the Point Mugu), which supports the Space-Ground Link System (SGLS) and satellite TT&C operations, and 13 satellites to include 1-FLTSAT, 5-UFO, 5-MUOS and 2-POLAR.

According to Space Delta 8, the new unit is intentionally numbered the 10th Space Operations Squadron to pay honor to its heritage under U.S. 10th Fleet.

“Space has become highly contested,” said U.S. Space Force Col. Matthew Holston, commander, Space Delta 8. “Our adversaries recognize our reliance on space, and they are actively seeking ways to create vulnerabilities to take away our competitive advantage. It is the 10th Space Force Operation Squadron that is on the front lines to guaranteeing our American way of life.”

The USSF is expected to grow from 2,400 active-duty service members to 6,400 by the end of the year, according to a statement made by Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond.

“Today we complete the first chapter in military space operations,” said Myers. “Our military stands better connected, more informed, faster, and able to operate with greater precision because of NAVSOC.”

USSF responsibilities will include developing Guardians, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing space forces to present to our Combatant Commands.

NBVC is a strategically located Naval installation composed of three operating facilities: Point Mugu, Port Hueneme and San Nicolas Island. NBVC is the home of the Pacific Seabees, West Coast E-2C Hawkeyes, 3 warfare centers and 80 tenants.

The U.S. Treasury Department said Friday that no major U.S. trading partner, including China, manipulated their currency during 2021 to gain an unfair trading advantage. While China has a significant bilateral trade surplus with the U.S., it did not meet the two other criteria to be named a manipulator — having a material current account surplus and engaging in persistent interventions.
