U.N. Had ‘Constructive’ Talks on Russian Grain, Fertilizer Exports

Reuters May 31, 2022

U.S. ready to give “comfort letters” to shipping and insurance to encourage needed grain and fertilizer exports.

By Michelle Nichols

UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Reuters) – A senior U.N. official had “constructive discussions” in Moscow with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov on facilitating Russian grain and fertilizer exports to global markets, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

The U.N. official, Rebecca Grynspan, is now in Washington for talks on the same issue “with the key aim of addressing growing global food insecurity,” Dujarric said.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the United States is prepared to give “comfort letters” to shipping and insurance companies to help facilitate exports of Russian grain and fertilizer.

She noted that Russian grain and fertilizer were not directly sanctioned by the United States but that “companies are a little nervous and we’re prepared to give them comfort letters if that will help to encourage them.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who visited Moscow and Kyiv last month, is trying to broker what he calls a “package deal” to resume both Ukrainian food exports and Russian food and fertilizer exports.

Russia’s war in Ukraine has fueled a global food crisis with prices for grains, cooking oils, fuel and fertilizer soaring. Russia and Ukraine account for nearly a third of global wheat supplies, while Russia is also a key fertilizer exporter and Ukraine is a major exporter of corn and sunflower oil.

Since Russia invaded on Feb. 24, Ukrainian grain shipments from its Black Sea ports have stalled and more than 20 million tonnes of grain are stuck in silos, while Moscow says the chilling effect of Western sanctions imposed on Russia over the war has disrupted its fertilizer and grain exports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Russia was ready to facilitate the unhindered export of grain from Ukrainian ports in coordination with Turkey, according to a Kremlin readout of talks with President Tayyip Erdogan.

“The Secretary-General is extremely grateful for the support that Turkey is giving in addressing the situation in the Black Sea and supporting the Secretary-General’s own efforts,” Dujarric said.

Sussmann-if they convicted him then hillbags could say "see I had NO idea he was doing that and this proves it" even though he billed me-plausible deniability and she off the hook

SO calcilated loss for the overall.

It got the info exposed (Mook) and so the only thing I was surprised by was that they only took 7 hours to deliberate-but that is actually a good thing now that I think about it because it really shows how corrupted they ALL are.

Trudope staged an event in Halifax the other day and obviously paid a 10 year old to run up and hug him and then they had a quote attributed a quite to kid along the lines of " I love him since he lets the refugees in" Like a fuggen 10 year old is gonna know about that on there own.

Yeha they ain't gonna give those up and hope they don't but look at what habbened in Australia all it takes is a well placed big FF and poof-public perception can shift in an instant. That all it took in OZ muh fren-albeit that one was particularly gruesome and production value wise over the top but (((they))) needed that to kick start that grab.

The Special Counsel Proved The FBI Belongs To The Swamp

@ProfMJCleveland @FDRLST

‘The FBI is our institution that should not be used as a political tool for anyone; not Republicans, not Democrats, not anyone.

Yesterday, after less than one full day of deliberations, a D.C. jury stacked with pro-Hillary Clinton jurors acquitted former Clinton campaign attorney Michael Sussmann, proving the FBI is not “ours” but the swamp’s.

Just more than two weeks ago, prosecutor Brittain Shaw began opening statements in United States v. Sussmann, by stating the obvious: “Some people have very strong feelings about politics and about Russia, and many people have strong feelings about Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.”

“But we are not here because these allegations involve either of them,” Shaw continued. “Nor are we here because the defendant’s client was the Clinton campaign.” Rather, “we are here because the FBI is our institution that should not be used as a political tool for anyone; not Republicans, not Democrats, not anyone.”

But after hearing overwhelming evidence that Sussmann lied when he told the then-FBI General Counsel James Baker he was providing data and whitepapers about a supposed secret communications channel between Trump and the Russian-based Alfa Bank on his own behalf, when in fact Sussmann was representing both the Clinton campaign and tech executive Rodney Joffe, the 12 D.C. residents found Sussmann not guilty.

It was not the verdict, however, that confirmed that the FBI belongs to career bureaucrats, high-powered D.C. elites who revolve in and out of the government as political appointees, and the families and friends of all the above. Rather, it was the speed with which the acquittal came, coupled with the in-court testimony and other evidence exposed by the special counsel throughout the prosecution that proved the FBI isn’t America’s anymore.

After hearing from some 20 witnesses, all but a few testifying for the prosecution, the jury spent a couple of hours on Friday deliberating before the long Memorial Day weekend. Tuesday morning, the 12 jurors returned to the D.C. federal courthouse to continue deliberations. But after requesting to see a copy of Sussmann’s taxi receipt and one of the whitepapers Sussmann peddled to Baker, they delivered their verdict of “not guilty.”

In total, then, the jury did not even deliberate for a full day, which means not one of the 12 jurors pushed the other 11 to wade through the detailed evidence presented by the special counsel’s office. Who could blame them, though, if the government’s own witnesses registered more offense at Congress for investigating the Russia collusion hoax than they did at Sussmann for misleading the FBI.

Consider Baker, to whom Sussmann was charged with lying. The former FBI general counsel testified he was “100 percent confident” Sussmann said during their September 19, 2016 meeting that he was not representing a client. Baker also told the jury he likely wouldn’t have taken the meeting if he knew Sussmann represented the Clinton campaign.

Yet Baker blamed himself for throwing Sussmann “into a maelstrom” and expressed outrage at how the congressmen investigating the investigation into Trump and his campaign behaved when they questioned Baker about his meeting with Sussmann. Baker displayed not even a sliver of the same distress over his friend lying to him.

On the contrary, when asked why he had just discovered the text message Sussmann sent him the night before their meeting, in which Sussmann wrote, “I’m coming on my own – not on behalf of a client or company. [W]ant to help the Bureau,” Baker told prosecutors: “I’m not out to get Michael. This is not my investigation. This is your investigation. If you ask me a question, I answer it. You asked me to look for something, I go look for it.”

While Baker may no longer work for the FBI, he did at the time Sussmann fed him the Alfa Bank folly. As an American, he should have been appalled that the former Clinton campaign attorney would play the law enforcement and intelligence communities for political purposes. Also, had Baker pulled his cell phone records earlier, the text could have served as a separate false statement charge—one proven in black-and-white—but the delay in Baker finding the text allowed the statute of limitations to expire.

Bill Priestap, the assistant director of the Counterintelligence Division for the FBI in 2016, likewise displayed a grudging demeanor when testifying on behalf of the special counsel. When asked whether it was “important” for Sussmann “to fully disclose his ties to the Clinton campaign,” rather than provide a straightforward answer, Priestap sparred with the prosecutor, first saying it “would have been part of several factors.” Then, when pushed, Priestap said, “I’m struggling on your use of the word ‘important.’ It’s a motivation that is relevant, but not the only factor.”

Prosecutors, however, had ample other evidence that established the materiality of Sussmann’s misrepresentation to Baker. But the jurors didn’t care because the jury, in the truest sense, was a jury of Sussmann’s peers. Just as his actual colleagues, Baker and Priestap, shrugged off the Section 1001 false statement offense, so did the jury, who could easily envision their neighbors and friends sitting in his stead.

But the proof that the FBI is no longer “ours” came even before the jury verdict—months earlier, when Special Counsel John Durham revealed in a discovery update that the Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General withheld evidence from Durham’s team.

The DOJ’s OIG is charged with conducting independent investigations related to DOJ employees and programs, including alleged misconduct by FBI agents. In preparing for the Sussmann trial, the special counsel’s office met with the OIG in October 2021 “to discuss discoverable materials that may be in the OIG’s possession.”

Even though the OIG possessed two of Baker’s FBI cellphones, prosecutors were not told of the phones’ existence by the OIG. Rather, the special counsel only learned of the two cellphones on January 6, 2022, when another FBI employee mentioned them.

The same discovery update that revealed the OIG had failed to mention Baker’s cell phones also noted that the OIG had falsely told Durham’s team that “a written forensic report” was the only information it possessed concerning a meeting between Sussmann and the OIG.

That meeting had occurred in early 2017, when Sussmann, on behalf of an unnamed client now known to be Joffe, went to the IG with a report that his client “had observed that a specific OIG employee’s computer was ‘seen publicly’ in ‘Internet traffic’ and was connecting to a Virtual Private Network in a foreign country.” The OIG provided the special counsel with the forensic report, but in doing so, also represented to prosecutors that it had ‘no other file[] or other documentation’ relating to this cyber matter.”

However, after Sussmann’s defense team informed Durham that Sussmann had personally met with the IG, the special counsel’s office circled back and, amazingly, the OIG discovered additional documentation related to Sussmann’s meeting with the IG. That the OIG—the entity charged with investigating FBI misconduct—withheld not one, but two pieces of evidence from the special counsel’s office until cornered should crush any remaining faith our country holds in the FBI.

And there was little trust left after the FBI launched Crossfire Hurricane on the most ridiculous of pretexts; after text messages revealed Lisa Page and Peter Strzok’s anti-Trump sentiments drove the Crossfire Hurricane team members; after the FBI and DOJ obtained four court surveillance orders based on fraud and then illegally surveilled Carter Page; after fired FBI Director James Comey leaked to the press, via an attorney friend, memos he had written following meetings with then-President Trump, to prompt the appointment of a different special counsel; and after FBI agent William Barnett told investigators that he believed Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office used the prosecution of Gen. Michael Flynn “to get Trump.”

The special counsel’s prosecution of Sussmann offered an opportunity for the country to see at least a small acknowledgment that the politicization of the FBI would not be tolerated. Instead, Americans witnessed confirmation by former FBI agents, the OIG, and the DC jury that the FBI is theirs, not ours.

China Orders $120 Billion Credit Line for Infrastructure Growth

Beijing ordered state-owned policy banks to set up an 800 billion yuan ($120 billion) line of credit for infrastructure projects as it leans on construction to stimulate an economy battered by coronavirus lockdowns.

The announcement, made at a State Council meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang, could help finance a significant chunk of infrastructure costs this year. Bloomberg Economics estimated China’s infrastructure spending came to 23 trillion yuan in 2021. Large policy lenders include China Development Bank. Beijing’s calls for faster implementation of growth-boosting policies have intensified since official data showed that economic activity contracted in April and unemployment rose sharply. High-frequency indicators suggest the decline continued in May, leading Li to warn last week of risks from a possible year-on-year contraction in the second quarter. China has aimed most financial support this year at corporations rather than households. At Wednesday’s meeting, the State Council reiterated vows to back internet platforms seeking domestic and overseas public listings. The top government body also said targeted support measures should be provided for people who have lost jobs or income, including raising pensions and distributing subsidies to some migrant workers.

It appears that they want to make Li Keqiang the next leader becasue he had taken a back seat for the last few years and now with the party congress coming up he getting way more involved, publicly.

Li Keqiang: China’s PM Back In The Limelight

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang last week urged a reported 100,000 local government officials to immediately take action to “stabilise” the situation in China amid upset and anger over the fallout from its commitment to ‘zero COVID’.

Speaking over video link at a State Council executive meeting, Li said China’s economy was facing an even greater challenge than at the start of the pandemic in 2020, according to Xinhua, China’s state news agency, when employment, industrial production and consumption all tumbled.

It was an extraordinary appeal from the premier, a trained economist who has spent much of his two terms in office side-lined despite holding the second most powerful post in China.

Online, the meeting was also compared by some to a 1962 summit where Communist Party officials admitted the failure of the Great Leap Forward, a disastrous campaign to modernise China’s economy that led to a brutal famine, according to the China Media Project.

https://jonathanturley.org/2022/06/01/second-amendment-showdown-beto-orourke-resumes-call-for-gun-confiscation/

Second Amendment Showdown: Beto O’Rourke Resumes Call for Gun Confiscation

Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke has been ping-ponging on gun confiscation ever since his presidential candidacy in 2019 when he famously declared “Hell yes, we are going to take your AR-15.” When he decided to run for Texas governor, he then dialed down that pledge. With the Uvalde massacre (and critics allege his poor polling numbers), O’Rourke seems to have moved back to the position on confiscation. He declared this week that, not only should they be banned, but AR-15 owners should not “be able to keep them.” Once again, however, O’Rourke omits any explanation of how constitutionally or practically he intends to carry out this confiscation plan.

There is a tendency among gun control figures to leave such details to someone else to address. For example, in the confirmation hearings of ATF nominee Steve Dettelbach, he admitted that he called for a ban on “assault weapons” in 2018 but does not have a definition for the term. It captured the casual and irresponsible character of today’s politics.

For O’Rourke, the call for confiscation is even more glaring.

I have previously written about the failure of politicians to acknowledge the limits posed by the Second Amendment and controlling case law. While there are good-faith objections to how the Second Amendment has been interpreted, the current case law makes such bans very difficult to defend. In 2008, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, recognizing the Second Amendment as encompassing an individual right to bear arms.

The effort to ban AR-15s often fails to clearly distinguish the weapons from other semi-automatic weapons in terms of calibre or rate of fire. There are also obvious practical problems. With an estimated 393 million guns in the United States and an estimated 72 million gun owners; three out of ten Americans say they have guns. Indeed, gun ownership rose during the pandemic, particularly among minority households.

These weapons are worth hundreds of dollars. Owners would not only challenge such a law but might demand compensation for their seized weapons. There are also over 15 million such weapons in the United States. The ATF is a relatively small agency to carry out such a massive confiscation program. Even in Texas, a state confiscation plan would require an unprecedented law enforcement effort.

It is easy to dismiss O’Rourke’s call as another effort to revive a dormant campaign. He was recently criticized for storming a press conference on the massacre. However, even the President has been engaging in false claims on the Second Amendment while raising questions over gun ownership of weapons from the 9mm to the AR-15. These comments are obviously popular with their political base but they also create false understandings of the limits of gun control.

The test of leadership is to speak honestly to voters on not just what you want to do but how you intend to do it. O’Rourke seems to dismiss any constitutional and practical barriers as he calls, again, for gun confiscation. If we hope to achieve meaningful compromise after this tragedy, we have to set aside the reckless rhetoric and focus on the realities of gun rights and gun control. That takes responsibility, not demagoguery, from our leaders.

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/ukraine-fires-human-rights-chief-perpetuating-russian-troop-systematic-rape-stories

Ukraine Fires Own Human Rights Chief For Perpetuating Russian Troop 'Systematic Rape' Stories

For over the past two months, an avalanche of stories have hit Western mainstream press which purported to document instances of mass rape carried out by Russian troops against Ukrainian civilians. One particular story in Time took off, driving outrage and condemnation by Western officials and receiving repeat coverage on CNN and other major US networks.

It alleged "a systemic, coordinated campaign of sexual violence" - relying chiefly on testimony gathered by Ukraine's appointed top human rights representative. It included a particularly shocking story of 25 teenage girls being gang-raped by Russian troops - nine of which became pregnant. According to the report:

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova said that 25 teenage girls were kept in a basement in Bucha and gang-raped; nine of them are now pregnant. Elderly women spoke on camera about being raped by Russian soldiers. The bodies of children were found naked with their hands tied behind their backs, their genitals mutilated. Those victims included both girls and boys...

Ukrainians are speaking up about rape as a war crime to ensure the world holds Russia accountablehttps://t.co/tEilTSgmbS

— TIME (@TIME) April 24, 2022

As has been the pattern in prior wars, whether in Syria or Libya, the media claims got more and more sensational and over-the-top as the conflict intensified, and as Western powers became more deeply involved, yet with no concrete or definitive proof.

But one consistent detail in the majority of the stories is that the aforementioned Ukraine human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova, is often the central figure feeding Western correspondents the shocking rape stories.

For example, she's featured in this April Newsweek piece:

Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian Parliament's Commissioner for Human Rights, alleged on Friday that Russian soldiers have raped children during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

In a Facebook post, Denisova alleged that an 11-year-old boy was raped by Russians in front of his mother who was tied to a chair and forced to watch as it happened in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

Lyudmyla Denisova, Ukrainian government image

Many such stories which presented ever-more horrifying details as the war progressed quickly went viral, particularly among pro-Ukraine activists on Twitter and other social media, to the point where prominent pundits would begin casually agreeing amongst themself that Russians simply are "animals".

And below is another example among many, which tended to be based on "reports say" for many of the most central, damning claims...

But recently, within the last couple of weeks, as investigators began to dig deeper into the allegations, it seems the media stories started to dry up. The geopolitical analysis blog Moon of Alabama details what happened in the following:

However, a bunch of eager NGOs in Ukraine, hoping for fresh 'western' money for new 'rape consultation and recovery' projects, tried to find real rape cases. They were disappointed when they found that there was no evidence that any rape had taken place

(machine translation):

On May 25, a number of media outlets and NGOs published an open appeal to Lyudmila Denisova calling for improved communication on sexual crimes during the war.

The signatories insist that Denisova should disclose only information about which there is sufficient evidence, avoid sensationalism and excessive detail in their reports, use correct terminology and take care of the confidentiality and safety of victims.

"Sexual crimes during the war are family tragedies, a difficult traumatic topic, not a topic for publications in the spirit of the 'scandalous chronicle.' We need to keep in mind the goal: to draw attention to the facts of crimes," the appeal reads.

An entire global activist movement even sprang up which focused on highlighting Russian sexual crimes in Ukraine, based on the premise that Russia's military is using "rape as a tool" as part of its arsenal to spread a campaign of terror...

The woman also shouted 'Don't rape us!' as the security encircled her quickly to take her off the red carpet. The incident again brought to light the Ukraine crisis at #Cannes.https://t.co/Ghs9UCKC7q

— WION (@WIONews) May 21, 2022

And now on Tuesday, Interfax, Politico, The Wall Street Journal, and others are reporting that Lyudmyla Denisova has been fired - precisely for floating and perpetuating fantastical claims of mass rape but without providing evidence...

Ukraine's parliament just fired human rights ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova. MPs claimed her work focusing on the rape of Ukrainians by Russian troops which "couldn't be confirmed with evidence [...] only harmed Ukraine and distracted the global media from Ukraine's real needs."

— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) May 31, 2022

"Ukrainian lawmakers dismissed the country’s ombudsman for human rights, Lyudmyla Denisova, in a no-confidence vote on Tuesday, concluding that she had failed to fulfill obligations including the facilitation of humanitarian corridors and countering the deportation of Ukrainians from occupied territory," The Wall Street Journal reported late in the day.

"Lawmaker Pavlo Frolov said Ms. Denisova was also accused of making insensitive and unverifiable statements about alleged Russian sex crimes and spending too much time in Western Europe during the invasion," the report added.

Frolov said in a Facebook post announcing her dismissal as the country's top human rights investigator:

"The unclear focus of the Ombudsman's media work on the numerous details of ‘sexual crimes committed in an unnatural way’ and ‘rape of children’ in the occupied territories that could not be confirmed by evidence, only harmed Ukraine."

Such accusations of mass rape by the enemy de jour are made in every war (Libya, Syria) . They rarely turn out to be true.https://t.co/bF0NVhQiFl https://t.co/i4rE2LMZMV

— Moon of Alabama (@MoonofA) April 21, 2022

Needless to say this is an absolutely devastating blow to Ukraine's 'information war' which has been in full force since the Russian invasion (as naturally in war each side will enter into propaganda campaigns against the other simultaneous to the actual ground war, and while seeking to sway world opinion).

Angry pushback has started already within hours after the news of Denisova's removal was confirmed, including from UN accounts and US media pundits...

Dismissal of Ombudsperson Denisova is contrary to int standards, undermines independence of important human rights institution in #Ukraine. We call on authorities to take steps to ensure independence of Ombudsperson & abide by int standards in law&practice https://t.co/C3689VYRih

— UNHumanRightsUkraine (@UNHumanRightsUA) May 31, 2022

That Ukraine's parliament took the drastic step of dismissing her in such a public manner also speaks volumes - strongly suggesting that Ukrainian officials themselves don't believe the bulk of the 'systematic rape' claims.

BREAKING, The FBI Maintains a Workspace, Including Computer Portal, Inside the Law Firm of Perkins Coie – The Ramifications are Significant

There is very little that surprises me, but this is completely stunning. An FBI whistleblower came forth to inform Rep Jim Jordan and Rep Matt Gaetz that the FBI maintains a workspace inside the law firm of Perkins Coie. {Direct Rumble Link}

In response to a letter sent by Rep. Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan, Perkins Coie, the legal arm of the DNC and Hillary Clinton, admitted they have been operating an FBI workspace in their Washington D.C. office since 2012. Pay attention to that date, it matters. WATCH:

This is a huge development. Essentially, what is being admitted in this claim is that a portal existed into FBI databases within the law firm that represents democrats. This means access to FBI database searches exists inside the office of the DNC and Clinton legal group. Think about the ramifications here.

CTH has long claimed there was some kind of direct portal link between the Clinton campaign team and the FBI databases. There were too many trails of extracted non-minimized research evidence in the hands of the Clinton team that CTH could not trace to a transferring FBI official. If Perkins Coie operated a portal in their office that allowed them to conduct search queries of American citizens, then everything would make sense. That access portal is exactly what is being claimed and admitted in this report.

The start date of 2012 is important for several reasons, not the least of which is FISA presiding Judge Rosemary Collyer criticizing the scale and scope of unlawful FBI database access going back to exactly 2012. Keep in mind a FISA-702 search, is simply an unlawful FBI warrantless electronic search of an American (“702” represents the American citizen) into the central database -maintained by the NSA- that contains all electronic data and communication.

I have been in the deep hole of the FISA-702 database search query violations for so long I don’t even need a flashlight.

The report from Matt Gaetz about Perkins Coie access to FBI databases, is in direct alignment with Rosemary Collyer’s prior report on FBI abuses of the database, 702 violations. Notice the dates and scope Judge Collyer references [Source Link].

Non-compliant queries since 2012.

85% of the FBI and contractor searches are unlawful.

Many of those searches involved the use of the “same identifiers over different data ranges.” Put in plain terms, the same people were continually being tracked, searched and surveilled by querying the FBI database over time.

The non-compliant searches go back to 2012. The same date mentioned for the FBI portal to begin operating inside the Perkins Coie office.

This specific footnote is a key. Note the phrase: “([redacted] access to FBI systems was the subject of an interagency memorandum of understanding entered into [redacted])”, this sentence has the potential to expose an internal decision; withheld from congress and the FISA court by the Obama administration; that outlines a process for access and distribution of surveillance data.

Note: “no notice of this practice was given to the FISC until 2016“, that is important.

♦Summary: The FISA court identified and quantified tens-of-thousands of search queries of the NSA/FBI database using the FISA-702(16)(17) system. The database was repeatedly used by persons with contractor access who unlawfully searched and extracted the raw results without redacting the information and shared it with an unknown number of entities.

The outlined process certainly points toward a political spying and surveillance operation. When the DOJ use of the IRS for political information on their opposition became problematic, the Obama administration needed another tool. It was in 2012 when they switched to using the FBI databases for targeted search queries.

This information from Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz has the potential to be extremely explosive.

It will be interesting to see how the domestic intelligence community media (NYT, Politico, WaPo – in that order) respond to this Matt Gaetz report.

I wrote about these suspicions in depth throughout 2017, 2018 and eventually summarized in 2019:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/authorities-make-arrest-1984-killing-linked-bulger-85083667

Authorities make arrest in 1984 killing linked to Bulger

BOSTON -- The suspect in a nearly four-decade old killing in South Boston that authorities have linked to notorious mobster James “Whitey” Bulger and his iron-fisted control of the drug trade in the neighborhood was held without bail on Tuesday.

Michael Lewis, 61, pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder at his arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court in connection with the July 1984 shooting death of Brian Watson, whose body was found along a New Hampshire highway about two months after he disappeared.

Lewis “adamantly denies the allegations and looks forward to his day in court," defense attorney James Sultan said.

The slaying took place when Bulger, who was killed in a federal prison in West Virginia in 2018, terrorized the neighborhood. And although neither the suspect nor the victim had a direct link to Bulger, his influence played a role, Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said after the arraignment.

“We had a glimpse in the courtroom today of a very different Boston, a Boston that we can never allow to happen again," Hayden said. “After nearly 40 years we are reminded of the mayhem and murder inflicted by cold-hearted and corrupt, cruel men.”

That lawless era in Boston's history has often been romanticized in the movies, said New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, who attended the arraignment to represent several law enforcement agencies in the state that contributed to the investigation.

“I think it’s a stark reminder that while Hollywood and others tend to glorify that era, the criminal actors of that era were not Robin Hoods, they were not heroes," he said. “The human suffering and the toll that was taken from the criminal acts that were committed during that era are still being felt today, and this case is an example of that.”

Watson, 23, was last seen alive on July 16 or 17, 1984, and was reported missing by his mother on July 28 that year, authorities said. His body was found hidden among the trees and bushes by a motorist who had pulled over on Interstate 93 in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Sept. 16, 1984.

According to the prosecution's account of events, the then 24-year-old Lewis and an another man involved in the drug trade drove around the neighborhood in July 1984 looking for a drug dealer they thought had told Bulger that Lewis' associate was selling angel dust in South Boston.

As a result, Bulger had demanded a $5,000 payment plus another $1,000 per week from the man, whose name was not disclosed by prosecutors. Bulger, who was also an FBI informant, was known to shake down drug dealers doing business in South Boston.

The pair encountered Watson, who agreed to help them find the other dealer and got in their car, prosecutors said.

“While the three men drove around South Boston, Lewis suddenly turned, shot and killed Watson," the district attorney's office said in a statement.

Bulger, the model for Jack Nicholson’s ruthless crime boss in the 2006 Martin Scorsese movie, “The Departed,” fled Boston in 1994 after his FBI handler warned him he was about to be indicted. Bulger spent 16 years as a fugitive before he was caught. He was convicted in 2013 of participating in 11 killings.

Federal authorities developed a “significant break” in Watson's case in 2009, but not enough to secure an indictment, the district attorney said. But new information was developed within the past year that led to Lewis' indictment on Friday.

He was responsible for the law of 1801 requiring an annual report by the Secretary of the Treasury, and he submitted the first one later that year as Secretary. He also helped create the powerful House Ways and Means Committee to assure Treasury's accountability to Congress by reviewing the Department's annual report concerning revenues, debts, loans, and expenditures-and that was so successful right?.

U.S. job openings fall to 11.4 million, but labor market still the strongest in decades

Some 4.4 million workers quit jobs in April.

The numbers: U.S. job openings dropped to 11.4 million in April from a record 11.9 million in the prior month, signaling some softening in what’s still the tightest labor market in decades. The number of people who quit jobs in April, meanwhile, was little changed at 4.4 million, the Labor Department said Wednesday. Quits topped 4 million last summer for the first time ever, part of a pandemic-era trend that’s become known as “the great resignation.” Before the pandemic, the number of people quitting jobs averaged fewer than 3 million a month. ob openings fell the most in health care and social services (-266,000), retail (-162,000) and hotels and restaurants (113,000).

Openings rose manufacturing, transportation and warehousing.

The so-called quits rate was unchanged at 2.9% for the third month in a row, just a tick below a record high. More people quit when the economy is doing well or they think they can find a better a job. Most people who quit are finding new jobs-really...?

The rate of layoffs also fell to the lowest level on record. There’s roughly two open jobs for every unemployed person, though companies never try to fill all of them. The number of job openings is largely viewed as a way to assess the strength of the labor market.

Mark June 15th (VIX exp.) & June 17th (options exp. OPEX) as a key turning point due to very large expirations and the FOMC (6/15). News story mentions of "bear market rally" are at the most since at least 2012, while those containing “buy the dip” have slumped to the lowest since 2020. That’s according to articles from all sources that have appeared on the Bloomberg Terminal. And fundamentally-speaking, one leg of the false-hope-stool for a Fed Put just got kicked out this morning as Nomura's Charlie McElligott notes that it now seems that Fed's Bostic has been messaged to walk-back his prior “pause” commentary, clarifying in an interview last night with Dow Jones MarketWatch that his suggestion last week of a September “pause” should NOT be construed as a “Fed Put”.

Anyone they managed to convince to "go long" with all the bullshit about recovery just got eviscerated with that 'walk back' at this point.

And done on the first day of the month too.

But they are seeing that people weren't "buying it" and starting to see that Bear market pullback stories were trending up while Bull market stories down.

Markets puked before this walk back so this is likely just loading up another round of shorts to then squeeze later into those aforementioned OpEx expiry's because they really don't want to pay out on the put interest so this drop is likely temporary-you can't make it too obvious so this will take some time to work it's way out.

They may let this go for a day or so but they really don't want to see an increase of 'bear market' stories so eventually they will turn it.

Who dafuq noes but them making Bostic "clarify" that his comments were not to be construed as a FED Put can be seen in the take-off of Yields.

Worst Housing Affordability" since 1991 excluding Bubble; Real House Prices and Price-to-Rent Ratio in March

Calculated Risk Affordability Index

I’ve put together my own affordability index - since 1976 - that is similar to the FirstAm approach (more of a house price index adjusted by mortgage rates and the median household income).

I used median income from the Census Bureau (estimated 2021 and 2022), assumed a 15% down payment, and used a 2% estimate for property taxes, insurance and maintenance. This is probably low for high property tax states like New Jersey and Texas, and too high for lower property tax states. If we were including condos, we’d also include HOA fees too (this is excluded). For house prices, I used the Case-Shiller National Index, Seasonally Adjusted (SA). Also, for the down payment - there wasn’t a significant difference between 15% and 20%. For mortgage rates, I used the Freddie Mac PMMS (30-year fixed rates).

So here is what the index looks like (lower is more affordable like the FirstAm index): Note that by this index, during the early ‘80s, homes were very unaffordable due to the very high mortgage rates. During the housing bubble, houses were also less affordable using 30-year mortgage rates, however, during the bubble, there were many “affordability products” that allowed borrowers to be qualified at the teaser rate (usually around 1%) that made houses seem more affordable.

In general, this would suggest houses are the least affordable since the housing bubble. And excluding the bubble - with all the “affordability products” - this is the worst affordability since 1991.

Look down to the second graph below (real house prices) and look what happened after 1991. House prices were mostly down or flat for the next 5 years in real terms.

Also, in March, the average 30-year mortgage rates were around 4.2%, and currently mortgage rates are close to 5.4% - so we already know the “Affordability Price Index” will increase further over the next couple of months (meaning houses are even less affordable). It has been over 16 years since the bubble peak. In the Case-Shiller release yesterday, the seasonally adjusted National Index (SA), was reported as being 60% above the bubble peak in 2006. However, in real terms, the National index (SA) is about 14% above the bubble peak (and historically there has been an upward slope to real house prices). The composite 20, in real terms, is about 6% above the bubble peak.

People usually graph nominal house prices, but it is also important to look at prices in real terms (inflation adjusted). As an example, if a house price was $200,000 in January 2000, the price would be over $329,000 today adjusted for inflation (64.5%). That is why the second graph below is important - this shows "real" prices (adjusted for inflation). The first graph shows the monthly Case-Shiller National Index SA, and the monthly Case-Shiller Composite 20 SA (through March) in nominal terms as reported.

In nominal terms, the Case-Shiller National index (SA) and the Case-Shiller Composite 20 index (SA) are both at new all times highs (above the bubble peak). The National Index is 60% above the bubble peak, and the Composite 20 index is 48% above the bubble peak. The second graph shows the same two indexes in real terms (adjusted for inflation using CPI less Shelter). Note: some people use other inflation measures to adjust for real prices. In real terms, the National index is 14.3% above the bubble peak, and the Composite 20 index is 5.7% above the bubble peak in early 2006.

In real terms, house prices are now above the previous peak levels. There is an upward slope to real house prices, and it has been 16 years since the previous peak, but real prices appear historically high (Of course interest rates had been very low).

The GOP helped Biden steal an election, just to get rid of Trump. Maybe they are worried about Americans with guns?

https://thefederalist.com/2022/06/01/there-is-no-bipartisan-gun-compromise-in-the-works-just-gop-capitulation/

Democrats and the corporate media like to call it a “compromise” when they get exactly what they want and Republicans get nothing. Just witness the bipartisan talks underway in the wake of the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas on new gun control legislation.

These talks, which reportedly involve four GOP senators led by Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, are focusing on two new gun control proposals: universal background checks and red flag laws. Whatever one’s opinion about the merits of these policies, it’s a fact that Democrats have long wanted to make it harder for law-abiding Americans to purchase guns and easier for the government to take them away.

Both of these proposals would do just that, while arguably doing almost nothing to prevent the sort of mass shooting we saw last week in Uvalde. One of the policy ideas, so-called “universal background checks,” isn’t a policy so much as a slogan meant to convey an inchoate desire that bad guys not be allowed to buy guns.

As nearly every gun owner in America knows, almost every gun sold in this country already comes with a background check, which is already required under federal law. As my colleague David Harsanyi noted yesterday, lying on your background check or evading it with a straw purchase are already illegal under federal law.

The other idea, a national red-flag law, would empower judges and police to confiscate guns from Americans who have not been charged with, nor committed, any crime at all. What’s more, a person judged guilty of pre-crime under a red-flag law cannot appeal the decision until after his or her guns have been confiscated.

Nineteen states already have some version of red-flag law already on the books, some worse than others, and all relatively new. New York has one, but it didn’t stop the Buffalo shooter from obtaining the guns he used to kill 10 people at grocery store last month. (He also passed a federal background check.)

So much for the policies themselves. The point here is not that they are good or bad ideas but that they are the sort of things Democrats have wanted to do for a long time and haven’t been able to because Republicans have blocked them.

Why have Republicans blocked them? Because too many Republican voters understand that the purpose of such laws is to erode the Second Amendment and eventually take guns from law-abiding Americans who pose no risk of danger to anyone.

But now we have these bipartisan talks underway. Reporting on the talks, The New York Times repeatedly framed them as efforts to strike a “deal” or a “compromise,” noting, for example, how projected GOP gains in the midterms “could inform how willing Republicans will be in the coming days to compromise on gun rights, an issue that has become central to their party.”

But there is in fact no compromise on the table. A compromise is when both parties give up something to get something else. That’s not happening here.

Democrats aren’t talking about how they’re willing to, say, get rid of gun-free zones in schools and colleges that receive federal funding in exchange for Republican support for a national red-flag law. That would be a compromise or a deal, and it would no doubt enrage the base of either party, especially the Democrats’ radical left wing, which is why it’s very unlikely to happen.

What’s happening here is that some Republicans, including Sens. Cornyn and Lindsay Graham, among others, are mulling over whether and when they will cave to pressure from the media and their Democrat colleagues and simply give them what they want without getting anything in return.

Make no mistake, there is no “deal” in the works here, there is only Republican capitulation. That’s something conservatives, at least, should be well familiar with by now. Republicans in Washington have been capitulating to Democrats and the media for decades, on nearly every conceivable issue.

We should not be surprised that they are doing it again, but we should at least be honest about what’s happening and not pretend that Cornyn and Graham and the others are cooking up some kind of genius compromise on gun control. If they were, that really would be news.

You won't hear about it from Western media, but the Republic of Srpska is moving toward Russia and actively seceding from the greater part of Bosnia.

It has been happening for a short time now, so the EU is attempting to find a way to quickly make moves to draft Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to the European Union as a member, in order to pressure the autonomy of the newly declared independent state away from Russo-Chinese interests.

People don’t like that, but if they want people punished, that’s what it takes… If you want the facts, if you want a report, that can be done fairly quickly. If you want scalps, that takes time.”

Sheryl Sandberg to leave Facebook, stepping down as Meta COO

Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down as Chief Operating Officer at Facebook parent company Meta, after joining the social media giant 14 years ago.

Sandberg, 52, has served second in line to Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg since 2008, and is credited with turning the social media startup into one of the most powerful companies in the tech industry. Sandberg told Zuckerberg about her decision over the weekend and said she will remain on the board at Meta, which oversees Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. "Sitting by Mark's side for these 14 years has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime," Sandberg said on Facebook in a post announcing her decision to step down. "Fourteen years later, it is time for me to write the next chapter of my life. I am not entirely sure what the future will bring. But I know it will include focusing more on my foundation and philanthropic work."

Sandberg is credited with generating billions in advertising revenue and improving Facebook's relationship with the public and regulators. She also leveraged her elevated profile by championing women in the workplace with her 2013 book "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead." Sandberg is leaving Meta as the company shifts its business model to focus on products that enable the virtual reality-driven metaverse. Sandberg said her decision to step down also will allow her to focus more on her family as she remarries this summer, seven years after the unexpected death of her husband Dave Goldberg. Zuckerberg called Sandberg's departure, in his own Facebook post, the "end of an era." "When Sheryl joined me in 2008, I was only 23 years old and I barely knew anything about running a company," Zuckerberg said. "Sheryl architected our ads business, hired great people, forged our management culture and taught me how to run a company." Zuckerberg also announced plans for the future, with Meta's chief growth officer Javier Olivan expected to take over as Meta's COO this fall. "Looking forward, I don't plan to replace Sheryl's role in our existing structure. I'm not sure that would be possible since she's a superstar who defined the COO role in her own unique way."

>>136521 Economic Schedule for week of May 29th, 2022

>Weds: All day: Light vehicle sales for May

Auto-Armageddon: May Sales Data Shows Dramatic Slowdown In US New Car Sales

The lack of stimmy money and unemployment check bonuses, combined with the fact that rates are rising and spending is slowing, made for a tumultuous May report for some of the most well known legacy auto manufacturers.

Here's a look at four of the first names to hit the tape this week, with most other major auto manufacturers set to release data within the next day or so.

*HONDA MAY U.S. AUTO SALES -57.3%

*TOYOTA US MAY SALES 175,990, -27.3% Y/Y

*MAZDA N. AMERICA MAY SALES DOWN 63.7%

*NISSAN APRIL GLOBAL SALES -29.1%

It's going to be tough to keep the melt-up in auto prices going with sales slowing down so much. Over the last year, both new and used car prices have soared amidst growing demand and a gummed up supply chain that keep inventory sparse.

Inventory looks like it could be less of an issue over the next few months, based on May's numbers. Remember, we wrote in the beginning of May that used car prices were crashing at a near record pace.

As we noted then, the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index, a wholesale tracker of used car prices, printed the most significant monthly decline in terms of rate of change averaged out over three months in April at 6.4%. It didn't beat the April 2020 print of -11.2% nor December 2008 of -11.5%, but those two periods were in full-blown financial crises. The Fed routinely says monetary tightening will create a soft-landing, similar to the mid-90s. However, tightening financial conditions could only spark trouble for an economy based 70% on consumption and driven by access to cheap credit. The cooling in the used car market could suggest a broader economic slowdown is ahead.

We also noted in May the used car market year-over-year growth rates versus used car auto loan rates. A jump in rates has dampened upward price pressure as fewer buyers can afford cars. This is likely part of what has contributed to May's terrible retail sales numbers. Additionally, according to a report out Wednesday by The Verge, GM is also slashing prices on their 2023 Chevy Bolt EV and EUV.

Hilariously, GM's PR department is definitely doing their job well, as they put the "spin" on the lowered pricing as a measure being taken "amid high demand". GM says it wants to send the message that “affordability has always been a priority for these vehicles", the Verge wrote.

A GM spokesperson said: “This change reflects our ongoing desire to make sure Bolt EV/EUV are competitive in the marketplace.” Because we all know that high demand drives prices...lower...right?

Rodney Joffe Receives 2016 M3AAWG Mary Litynski Award for Lifetime Work in Fighting Text Spam, Malware and DDoS Attacks

M3AAWG 34th General Meeting, Dublin, Ireland, June 10, 2015 – A thoughtful provocateur ready to take on difficult challenges for the good of the Internet and an influential cybersecurity advocate, Rodney Joffe has worked to protect end-users since the 1990s when he fought to contain spam as the first email marketing campaigns were taking hold. In the ensuing years, he has single-handedly crippled text spam, has developed a sophisticated system to protect DNS, and has helped manage the worldwide response to major botnets infecting millions of users. At the M3AAWG 34th General Meeting in Dublin, Ireland, Joffe received the 2016 M3AAWG Mary Litynski Award for his lifetime achievements in protecting the Internet and end-users.

“Rodney is the kind of person who embraces the Internet with all its possibilities and quietly works behind the scene to fight abuse. Today’s industry leaders know he’s the person to go to when you need to get something done, especially if it involves protecting the general online public who might not be in a position to take action. When he sees a problem, Rodney jumps in with whatever talent and resources are needed and his accomplishments over the last twenty years have made us all safer,” said Michael Adkins, M3AAWG Chairman of the Board.

Joffe’s most recent focus has been on combatting botnets, nefarious networks of malicious code designed to steal personal information, hijack a user’s machine or engage in other harmful activities. Chairing the Conficker Working Group starting in 2008, Joffe managed the efforts of thousands of technologists in 115 countries working to mitigate the botnet. He also served as an envoy for the group, pressuring the U.S. government to pay attention to the problem and testifying at U.S. congressional cybersecurity hearings in 2009. In 2013, he received the U.S. FBI Director’s Award for helping organize the industry’s response to the Mariposa botnet, another major infection that affected users globally. He has also participated as a core threat designer in cybersecurity exercises operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the White House and the U.S. National Security Council.

Advocating for better global cooperation against online abuse, Joffe said, “The criminals that we are fighting have the same or better skillsets as us but they don’t have the moral compass we do. So it’s not a level playing field and, right now, all we’re really able to do is contain the problem. Until we can get to the point where law enforcement around the globe, as a group, are prepared to go after the bad guys and put them in jail so there aren’t outposts where they can hide, we’re not going to be able to completely win this battle.”

Developed UltraDNS and Other Widely Used Network Security

Joffe’s interest in protecting networks grew out of his work at Genuity, a major Internet Service Provider he founded in 1995 and one of the first Internet hosting companies. Three years later, Joffe created Anycast for DNS as a faster, more robust, and less expensive Internet addressing and routing system. In 1999, this evolved into the creation of UltraDNS, a Domain Name Service lookup and traffic management service that is widely used today to protect against Distributed Denial of Service attacks. Criminals use DDoS attacks to direct massive volumes of traffic to a targeted domain name, trying to flood the website’s servers and knock the organization offline. The technologies Joffe implemented known as DNS Shield provide additional, protected Internet routing to safeguard Web and email services for government and business enterprises. UltraDNS is now offered as a Neustar product, where Joffe serves as senior vice president, senior technologist and a fellow.

Russia in 'failure to pay' credit event, investor committee says

A panel of investors on Wednesday found Russia had triggered a credit event after it failed to pay nearly $1.9 million in interest on a sovereign bond, taking the nation a step closer to its first major external debt default in over a century. The EMEA Credit Derivatives Determinations Committee (CDDC) said on its website that the committee voted yes to a question on whether a "Failure to Pay Credit Event" occurred with respect to Russia. Russia's international 2022 bond matured on April 4 and payment of principal and interest due at maturity was not made until May 2.

Overseas holders of that Russian sovereign bond sought a ruling on whether $1.9 million in potential interest accrued during that period, which was not included in the payment, constituted a "credit event" that might allow them to collect a payout on default insurance known as credit default swaps. The committee, whose 14 members include Citibank, Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Elliot Management and PIMCO, agreed that the failure to pay happened on May 19 and that a request to find a resolution was submitted on May 26. It will meet again on June 6 at 2 p.m. London time (1300 GMT) to continue the process, which could move to set up an auction to determine any CDS payouts. There are currently $2.54 billion of net notional CDS outstanding in relation to Russia, including $1.68 billion on the country itself and the remainder on the CDX.EM index, according to JPMorgan calculations. Russian dollar-denominated bonds were trading up 1 cent to 2.5 cents on Wednesday, Refinitiv data shows. They are in very distressed territory, ranging from 30 cents on the dollar to as low as 19 cents. A Russian default on other debt looks inevitable, according to some investors, after the U.S. Treasury chose in late May not to extend a license that had allowed creditors to receive payments from Russia despite financial sanctions. Russia has around $40 billion of international bonds outstanding and just under $2 billion in payments is due through year-end.

Sanctions imposed by western countries and their allies on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, as well as counter measures by Moscow, have all but excluded the country from the global financial system. Russia's Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said last month that Moscow will service its external debt obligations in rubles if the United States blocks other options and will not call itself in default as it has the means to pay. Not all bonds allow for payment in rubles, however. The country has said it could extend a scheme used for its gas payments to sovereign bondholders, allowing Eurobond investors to open Russian FX and ruble accounts. The money would be channeled through Russia's National Settlement Depository (NSD), which is not under Western sanctions.

Russia had nearly $650 billion of available gold and currency reserves prior to the Ukraine invasion, which it calls a "special military operation," compared to $40 billion of international debt. It also makes billions of dollars a week selling oil and gas.

US plans to sell drones that can be armed with Hellfire missiles to Ukraine

The Biden administration intends to sell four advanced drones, which can be armed with powerful Hellfire missiles, to Ukraine for their defense against Russian invaders, a report said. The four MQ-1C Gray Eagle drones have longer endurance time and range than the smaller aerial systems the Ukrainian army is currently using to defend itself since Russia’s invasion began on Feb. 24, Reuters reported, citing three sources familiar with the planned sale. Congress can still block the exchange of the sophisticated drones, which would come after President Joe Biden in March nixed the transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine. The Gray Eagle drones can fly up to 30 or more hours at a time and gather large amounts of data for intelligence purposes. Each Gray Eagle drone can also be equipped with up to eight 100-pound Hellfire missiles — about double the weight of missiles carried by the current drones Ukraine is using. The sale would put an advanced reusable US system capable of multiple deep strikes on the battlefield against Russia for the first time.
