Oil Slumps Below $85 for First Time Since January on Demand Fear
Oil tumbled to the lowest since January as a dollar surge and global demand concerns weigh on prices despite the threat of disruption to Russian supplies.
US benchmark West Texas Intermediate sank below $85 while the global Brent benchmark fell below $90. A dollar gauge reached an all-time high on Wednesday, offering a macro headwind at a time when the oil market is grappling with potential slowing demand in China.

Bank of Canada unveils 75-basis point hike and says rates will need to go higher still
The Bank of Canada hiked interest rates by 75-basis points to a 14-year high on Wednesday, as expected, and said the policy rate would need to go higher still given the fight against raging inflation.The central bank, in a regular rate decision, increased its policy rate to 3.25% from 2.5%, matching analyst forecasts to hit a level not seen since April 2008. The decision lifted rates above the neutral range for the first time in about two decades. The central bank said while headline inflation fell to 7.6% in July from 8.1%, that was due to gasoline prices, with the core measures continuing to move higher. Prices in Canada are increasing at rates not seen since the early 1980s.
Governor Tiff Macklem had said rates would likely need to go above the neutral rate, the range from 2% to 3% where monetary policy neither stimulates nor weighs on the economy.

Twitter's stock price spiked 4.2% Wednesday after a judge in Delaware rejected billionaire Elon Musk's request to delay a trial over his potential purchase of the company.
Musk had requested a delay at the end of August after a whistleblower at Twitter claimed the company made false claims about its security capabilities. Twitter is suing Musk to force him to follow through on his offer to purchase the company for $44 billion.
Lawyers for Musk and Twitter will open their arguments in the Delaware Court of Chancery on Oct.17.
Musk has sought to back out of his original offer to buy Twitter at $54.20 per share, arguing the company misrepresented how many spam accounts were active on its platform. After a week of daily grid emergencies, California officials may have helped avoid widely-threatened rolling blackouts - which affected just 75,000 households across three counties - after Residents were told throughout the week (including Tuesday) to start conserving energy between 4pm and 9pm. And while Californians clearly responded to the warnings, it may have been an Emergency Alert text sent to more than half-a-million customers that finally avoided mass shutdowns yesterday. This part of the trend is not new - as a dip around can be observed every day for the last week. A second dip occurred at 5pm or so.But then as Bloomberg notes, California officials sent an emergency text message around 5:45 warning approximately 525,000 homes and businesses that if they don't conserve power immediately, "power interruptions may occur." (got one of these-not two) And down went energy demand - plunging 1.2 gigawatts between 5:50 and 5:55 pm, with the decline continuing to 46 megawatts when the grid emergency was canceled without widespread rolling blackouts. Thank you to everyone who saved power -- coming together to keep the lights on for each other is the California way," said Governor Newsom's office in a tweet. "But, we aren’t out of the woods yet. Paschi CEO Intensifies Meetings to Seek Capital Hike Investors
Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA Chief Executive Officer Luigi Lovaglio is intensifying meetings to convince investors to subscribe to a key 2.5 billion euros ($2.5 billion) capital increase, the executive said in an interview with Milano Finanza. The Siena-based lender is seeking to raise new equity and cut about 4,000 jobs as part of a plan to boost capital reserves and profitability. Lovaglio has reworked the bank’s strategy after the Italian government failed to comply with an EU requirement that it exit its stake by the end of last year.
Among the options the CEO is reviewing to raise money is to find an anchor investor, he said in the interview, without elaborating. Paschi dropped to a record low on Tuesday after a press report that banks arranging its vital capital increase are pushing for a delay until next year because of market conditions. Monte Paschi said in July that it seeks to start the capital hike by mid-October to complete it by Nov. 12, though the timeline may change depending on market conditions. The bank can sell shares in tranches to facilitate the process. Italy has already committed to subscribe to its 64% holding.

Forced Buying Puts a Floor Under Stocks Nobody Else Wants to Own
In a week that saw discretionary buyers beat a quick retreat from risky assets, another set of traders stood up to halt a three-week plunge in the S&P 500: those with little choice but to buy. They included short sellers, whose rush to cover lifted stocks they’re betting against to gains of more than twice the market’s. Options dealers were another bullish force after getting caught needing to boost hedges by buying stocks when they rise. Certain quantitative traders for whom chart thresholds are a call to action also made their presence known. (These so-called quantitative traders are ALL the same they are afraid they might miss something so instead of looking for what is really going on they HAVE to do something and never realize that doing nuthing IS something when you are betting against: record share buybacks, the already mentioned over-leveraged hedge-funds, a Federal Reserve that states that it "hates this rally" yet it make sure they don't have to overtly bail out any one place at a time ala 2007-2009 so they just hide it all in the daily NYFRB Operations and you FOREX traders?...you play in a $6T a day arena and you continually get yer ass handed to ya (retail-flows say most of you are not doing very well) yet they just HAVE to so something so they will always be on the wrong side if you constantly think you are missing something)
At the center of the bounce is the battle line of 3,900, which acted as a support in mid-May and then kept a lid on advances briefly in June and July. (technical trading on a large scale and being consistently profitable doing it using that solely 'left' the bldg Elvis style in late 2012 so although there are opportunities doing that they are like picking up nickels in front of a steam-roller) Short sellers, whose wagers looked prescient during the 2022 bear market, were caught wrong-footed as stocks bounced back. The need to cut losses forced an unwind that led to an 8.2% jump in a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. basket of the most-shorted stocks over the week. Technically driven demand defied the growing drumbeat of Wall Street warnings and overshadowed what’s increasingly a bearish army of fundamental-based investors. This year, cash holdings have risen in mutual funds, and hedge funds’ equity exposure hit multi-year lows.
Now, retail investors, one of the staunchest dip buyers in the post-pandemic era, are reconsidering their bullish stance. During the week through Tuesday, they sold stocks for the first time since June, according to a JPMorgan Chase & Co. estimate derived from public data on exchanges. Meanwhile, more than $10 billion was pulled out of equity funds, data compiled by EPFR Global show.

After suffering the worst first half in five decades, the S&P 500 recouped half its bear-market decline during a two-month, 17% rally from mid-June. Once the bounce hit a wall at its 200-day average in August, the index quickly reversed its course and lost almost 10% before this week’s rebound.

2nd Look at Local Housing Markets in August
This is the second look at local markets in August. I’m tracking about 35 local housing markets in the US. Some of the 35 markets are states, and some are metropolitan areas. I’ll update these tables throughout the month as additional data is released.
The big story for August existing home sales is the sharp year-over-year (YoY) decline in sales. Another key story is that new listings are down YoY in August as the sellers’ strike continues. Of course, active listings are up sharply YoY, but inventory growth has stalled. The increase in inventory so far has been due to softer demand, likely because of higher mortgage rates.

Here is a summary of active listings for these housing markets in August. Inventory in these markets were down 34% YoY in January, down 8% YoY in April, and are now up 42% YoY! So, this is a significant change from earlier this year, but about the same YoY increase as in July (up 43% YoY).

And here is a table for new listings in August. For these areas, new listings were down 10.8% YoY. The sellers’ strike has slowed the increase in active inventory. Last month, new listings in these markets were down 7.5% YoY.

In August, sales in these markets were down 20.2%. Note that in August 2022, there was one more selling day than in August 2021, so the SA decline in August sales will be larger than the NSA decline. The opposite was true in July (one more selling day in July 2021 than in July 2022). So, seasonally adjusted, this is probably close to the same YoY decline as in July.

Core Retail Sales Disappoints In August, July Revised Down (wut a surpirse!)
While consensus expected a 0.1% drop in headline retail sales in August, BofA was more optimistic (due to inflation - remember retail sales data is 'notional' not 'real')...BofA was correct on the headline retail sales print - which rose 0.3% MoM -but we note that July was revised down to a 0.4% drop (from unchanged initial print) But core (Ex-Autos) tumbled 0.3% MoM (against expectations of unch) and Ex-Autos and Gas also disappointed (+0.3% MoM vs +0.5% MoM exp)...(and next month THIS will also be revised downwards and look at the HEAVY revisions they did0cap #3-anyone who doesn't werk in gubmint and consistently gets this wrong month after month would have been fired long ago- but they keep the "hope" alive with the wild-ass projections that are then "revised down" the following month) cap #4
On a year-over-year basis, both headline and core retail sales growth slowed...Once again, all these numbers need to be adjusted for inflation - which surprised to the upside in August - and that suggests demand pressures on a volume basis. Online sales dropped for the first time since March...Finally, the Control Group - which feeds through to GDP - was very disappointing. Against expectations of a 0.5% MoM rise, it was unchanged in September.

Mortgage rates climb above 6%, first time since 2008
Average rate for a 30-year fixed-mortgage is double what it was a year ago. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage topped 6% this week, the highest level since 2008 and more than twice what it was a year ago.
Freddie Mac said Thursday that its latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey shows the average rate for the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage rose again this week to 6.02%%, up from last week's reading of 5.89%. At this time last year, 30-year fixed-rate products averaged 2.86%.
The rate for a 15-year fixed note also rose, averaging 5.21% after coming in at 5.16% last week. That is also more than double the average rate at this time last year when 15-year products were at 2.12%.
"Mortgage rates continued to rise alongside hotter-than-expected inflation numbers this week, exceeding six percent for the first time since late 2008," said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. "Although the increase in rates will continue to dampen demand and put downward pressure on home prices, inventory remains inadequate. This indicates that while home price declines will likely continue, they should not be large."
