Armey calls Rep. Frank 'Barney fag'
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 House Republican leader Dick Armey referred to Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., one of two openly gay members of Congress, as 'Barney fag' during an interview Friday with radio reporters, sparking outrage among Democrats and human rights groups. Answering a question about a book deal he recently revealed, Armey said, 'I like peace and quiet, and I don't need to listen to Barney fag Barney Frank haranguing in my ear because I made a few bucks off a book I worked on.' The comment drew an outpouring of criticism, including from Senate Republican leader Bob Dole and Frank himself, and prompted a dramatic defense from Armey on the House floor after the issue was widely reported in the national news
