World's largest insurance broker pays price of scandal

Marsh & McLennan, the insurance broker at the centre of a corruption scandal, yesterday reported a 57% slump in second-quarter profits.

The company, the world's largest broker, posted profits of $166m (£93m), down from $389m in the same period a year ago. Excluding acquisitions, revenue for the quarter fell by 9%.

In February Marsh & McLennan agreed to pay $850m to settle a lawsuit, filed by New York attorney general Eliot Spitzer, which accused it of taking kickbacks from insurance firms for directing business their way.
