Virginia Mandates Slavery Lessons for Kindergarteners

 

Parents, educators take issue with new curriculum

 

Virginia kindergarten students will learn about institutional racism alongside the alphabet, according to a new curriculum created for the upcoming school year.

 

Loudoun County is adding "social justice" to the mission of teaching elementary school students reading, writing, and arithmetic. The Washington, D.C., suburbβ€”the richest county in the countryβ€”has teamed up with the Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) education arm Teaching Tolerance to develop its new curriculum. The proposed lesson plan will restructure history and social studies classes to emphasize slavery as fundamental to American society for students from kindergarten to the fifth grade.

 

"Sugarcoating or ignoring slavery until later grades makes students more upset by or even resistant to true stories about American history," the curriculum reads. "Long before we teach algebra, we teach its component parts. We should structure history instruction the same way."

 

Not every Loudoun County educator is on board with the administration's direction. A longtime elementary school teacher, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said that the school system had always taught students about the reality of slaveryβ€”lessons that typically begin in the fourth grade. She said the administrative focus to push racial politics on students who do not yet know how to read is motivated by politics, rather than education.

 

"I teach lower grades in elementary school.… [Never before] did I have to teach about slavery," the teacher said. "Our standards were always [to] teach about famous Americans, George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., people like that. But, it was all very general and the bigger picture, we highlighted their accomplishments."

 

The new Teaching Tolerance kindergarten curriculum requires teachers to explain social justice theories to five-year-olds. The Loudoun County elementary school teacher believes this curriculum will prove divisive for children who lack the maturity to deal with the subject.

 

"What they're really trying to do is divide people as early as they can, starting now with kindergarteners. They're really going to be inciting hate," the teacher said. "They're pointing out that there's β€˜whiteness' and β€˜blackness' and that's crazy. We never taught about that in school…. We learn about how to get along with one another and be kind and respect others. But now, with this new curriculum that they're adding, it's going to do the total opposite."

 

The curriculum was first introduced by the Virginia Department of Education's superintendent. When asked how the SPLC guidelines were funded and whether the guidelines were mandatory across the state, the state's education department deflected.

TikTok Hires Internet Police to Monitor American Users, Ex-Censor Says

 

Liu Lipeng, who worked as an online censor in China for a decade, said he was passed over for the job in 2018 after suggesting in the interview that TikTok shouldn’t overly censor content because Americans value freedom of speech.

Facebook Boycott: Disney Latest To Pull Ads In Backlash Against Platform’s Hate Speech Policies

 

Disney has become the latest company, and one of the largest, to cut its advertising spending on Facebook as part of the growing boycott against the social media platform. Numerous major companies – like Starbucks, Adidas, and Unilever – have pulled advertising dollars from the site due to its poor handling of hate speech and other controversial materials.

 

It is unclear when and for how long this advertising cut from Disney will go into effect. Ads from Disney subsidiaries like ABC and Freeform have already disappeared from the social network.

 

The move by Disney was first reported Saturday by the Wall Street Journal. Disney has not made any public comment on their plans.

 

Prior to this, the media giant had bought a significant amount of advertising on the platform for its new streaming service, Disney+. The Journal reports that Disney was in fact the biggest advertiser on Facebook in the first half of 2020, with around $210 million spent. In 2019, it was the second-biggest advertiser behind Home Depot.

 

β€œWe know we have more work to do, and we’ll continue to work with civil rights groups … and other experts to develop even more tools, technology and policies to continue this fight,” Facebook said in a statement on the boycott.

 

Despite this claim from the company, organizers of the boycott have said that there is β€œno commitment to action” after they met with CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

 

The movement took shape earlier in July, organized by groups like the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League. These civil rights activist groups have criticized Facebook’s continued inability to efficiently fight bigoted content and intentional misinformation.

White House Looking to Block Funding for CDC, Testing in New Aid Bill

 

Staff at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have not been good soldiers in Donald Trump’s war on the coronavirus and the president now apparently wants to deny them more funding in the new coronavirus relief bill because they aren’t playing ball.

 

The president believes there’s plenty of money still left from the $2 trillion relief bill he signed in March. But the administration is looking to deny the CDC any increases for testing and contact tracing, leading some GOP aides in the Senate to despair.

 

The CDC continues to treat the coronavirus as a public health issue. It is not. It’s a political issue and not being sensitive to that singular fact is apparently going to cost the agency.

Some Senate Republicans are pushing for more money for Covid-19 contact tracing and testing, but the White House argues that there is sufficient funding still remaining from the March stimulus law, the source said.

 

The specifics of the bill are expected to be unveiled next week, so any discussions at this point are just preliminary β€” and the amount of funding to propose is a moving target even among GOP members, according to a GOP source. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has kept details of the bill closely held so far.

 

β€œYou would have to try hard to come up with a more tone deaf position,” one GOP aide said, noting that in recent days, the hope had been that the Trump administration would take coronavirus more seriously in an effort to make it clear to the public and voters that they were managing the crisis.

 

It’s no secret that the president doesn’t like all this coronavirus testing. It’s showing that too many people are becoming infected. Contact tracing would help in local efforts to control an outbreak of the virus in a specific location. With adequate contact tracing, you wouldn’t have to shut down an entire state to slow the spread of the virus.

 

A positive test result for the coronavirus β€” if detected early enough β€” would keep the secondary infections down to a minimum as those infected would look to quarantine themselves. This means that there should be a lot more testing going on if we’re going to meaningfully slow the spread of the disease.

 

It just doesn’t make sense not to raise the level of spending for testing and contact tracing as we look to climb out of the hole we’re in.

 

Even if there is money left over from the last stimulus bill, much more is needed. As for funding the CDC, unless the administration wants to take responsibility for testing and contact tracing away from the agency and give it to some other agency, the CDC is the only game in town.

 

As for the bill itself, the two sides are already far apart.

While House Democrats passed a relief package at the end of May, McConnell has made it clear that the bill would go nowhere in the Republican-controlled Senate.

 

It doesn’t appear that the House Democrats and Senate Republicans are anywhere close to having an agreed upon package, and any friction between GOP senators and the White House would only widen the quagmire.

 

The amounts we’re talking about are minimal in a trillion-dollar aid package. But they could make the difference between victory and defeat for Trump who must show progress in ending the crisis as soon as possible.

How COVID-19 fatality reports are distorting the data on daily death rates

 

Health departments publish two fatality figures; the media pick the more frightening one.

 

Seven months into the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, state governments and media outlets continue to publicize confusing, misleading data on the spread of the disease here, perpetuating fears that deaths from the virus are skyrocketing on a daily basis even as those fatalities are generally distributed across a period of days, weeks or even months.

 

At issue is how state health departments publicize daily reports of fatalities within the state's borders. State health officials have for months been publishing two sets of mortality statistics: deaths that occurred on the publication date in question, and deaths that have only recently been catalogued from state backlogs.

 

The Arizona Department of Health Services publishes both of those figures on its coronavirus dashboard: On its "Summary" page, it lists the "number of new deaths reported today," while on its "Covid-19 Deaths" tab, the state lists the actual "deaths by date of death."

 

The distinction is a critical one: The state's "new deaths" every day do not actually reflect the number of coronavirus fatalities Arizona has logged in the past 24 hours, but rather the number of COVID-19 deaths it has identified from both new and older death certificates.

 

Health department spokeswoman Holly Poynter confirmed to Just the News on Friday that the state's "new deaths" figure is not drawn exclusively from the most recent 24-hour period of fatalities.

 

"While we had 91 new deaths reported today, the graph [on the dashboard] shows them by the actual date of death," she said on Friday. "Although those 91 were reported today, it doesn't mean today was the date of death. Those deaths may have occurred at any time on the graph but were simply reported today."

 

She added that the state's graph "gets updated every day with the new deaths by actual date of death." Poynter did not respond when asked if there was a way to see the date distribution from each day's new report of deaths.

 

The daily new death report often generates misleading sensationalist reports throughout the media. On July 7, for instance, the state recorded 117 "new deaths" on its dashboard. Calling that number a "record," CNN reported that Arizona that day reported "117 deaths from Covid-19 over the last 24 hours." Business Insider reported that Arizona recorded "its highest number of newly reported coronavirus deaths" on that day. Antifa Rioters Break Into Portland Police Union and Set It on Fire as Mayor Hamstrings Federal Troops

 

On Saturday evening, two groups of antifa and Black Lives Matter rioters terrorized Portland, squaring off against police and federal troops. One group attacked the Portland Police Bureau’s North Precinct and the Portland Police Association (PPA) β€” the police union β€” while the other group targeted the federal courthouse and Justice Center, returning to set yet another bonfire at the ruins of the elk statue nearby. Antifa broke into the PPA and set it on fire. Before the violence began on this 51st day of unrest in Portland, Mayor Ted Wheeler (D-Portland) decided to hamstring federal troops, aiming to prevent local law enforcement from teaming up with them.

 

According to a police report, an angry crowd first marched to the Portland Police North Precinct at around 8:35 p.m., blocking the streets as they went. β€œSome people tampered with gates, broke patrol vehicle windows, and vandalized patrol vehicles. People taunted officers as they arrived to work,” the police reported. The crowd blocked streets around the precinct.

 

At around 9:27 p.m., the police directed people to leave to the west. The crowd walked to the PPA offices, arriving at about 10:31 p.m. The antifa rioters broke into the front doors while others blocked a nearby street with dumpsters that they lit on fire. β€œMany in the crowd wore helmets and carried clubs and shields.”

 

At about 10:45 p.m., antifa rioters broke into the PPA office and ignited a fire inside. When the police arrived, many of the rioters began to flee to the east. The northern group of rioters had not finished their violence for the evening, however. Antifa regrouped and the police arrived to attempt to restore order. Meanwhile, another group of antifa rioters targeted the Justice Center and the federal courthouse. They tore down fences around Chapman Square Park and Lownsdale Square Park β€” where antifa had temporarily set up an β€œautonomous zone” last week. Police broke up that encampment and closed down the parks for repair.

 

Rioters also removed fencing around the federal courthouse and used to to barricade the doors. Others used fencing to block the doors of the Justice Center.

The order is reportedly one of at least four where Sabre agreed to provide such traveller information. In 2015, the FBI was hunting Aleksei Yurievich Burkov, whom investigators suspected was running Cardplanet, a US$20 million online marketplace for buying and selling stolen credit card data. Burkov was eventually extradited from Israel in November 2019 and pleaded guilty to charges of fraud, identity theft, computer intrusion, wire fraud and money laundering in January.

 

Sabre originally made headlines after it helped US authorities retrace the paths of the 9/11 hijackers after their attack. Newly formed Iraqi Shiite armed group, such as Usbat al-Tha’ireen, threatened to target the U.S. embassy in Baghdadi on several occasions. One of these groups could be responsible for the new attack.

 

The U.S. military usually responds to any attack that result in casualties. Today’s attack didn’t result in any losses, thus no escalation is expected.

I have never trapped a wild animal, but I have had to coral a stray dog that I took in.

He was an old, part beagle stray dog that family took in. Never listened to a word we said, only did what he want. Not wild or mean, just stubborn and lots of personality.

He would never come to us. So what did we have to do to get him when we needed to.

Pretend we didn't want him. Let him think he was in control.. Ignore him.

I imagine i would do the same if I wanted to catch a wild animal…lots of patience and let them think they are in control.

That's right, both the customer and the gas station receive a fine, the latter presumably for serving someone without a mask. This is the future folks, except it is happening now: No participation in society without compliance.

 

It's time to stop this creeping Communism by defying the bullshit mask law en masse.

 

The relief cheques and bailouts, the promise of recovery are all designed to stifle dissent. The bottom line is that this nonsense is the new normal and the sooner we resist it, the better.

This should trigger every thinking person's attention, particularly as it is reported that Gates refused to have his own children vaccinated.

The Call for β€œSocial Distancing” Pursues Hidden Goals

Since the adult generation often does not seek or have access to this world of their children, many of them are left to themselves and no longer in exchange with their parents and the adult world. They prefer to hang on the drip of the Internet giants and internalize their view of man and the world.

 

More and more parents are complaining that they have difficulties in getting into a relationship with their children, that they don’t let their children tell them anything and even turn away from them. Enlightened psychologists and educators know that this development has been consciously driven forward by interested parties for years. For the isolated human being, isolated from his conspecifics, whose family and communal roots have been cut off, is for global rat catchers and their governments an easy prey. It can be better controlled, manipulated and instrumentalized for violent excesses and wars.

 

In difficult times like the present, the lonely and isolated young person lacks the maintaining family and friendship ties and thus loses courage and orientation. The new virtual β€œfriends” and companions are also followers or even part of the global rat catchers. This development has followed a hidden agenda for decades. All parents, educators and those interested in the common good must know this.

 

Recently, French bestselling author Michel Houellebecq also commented on this topic: He does not believe in a better world after Corona. On the contrary, he sees a tendency to accelerate isolation and alienation. In a letter to the radio station β€œFrance Inter” he writes:

A cholesterol-lowering drug could make coronavirus as treatable as the common cold, scientists have suggested. Researchers at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center looked at depriving the virus of nutrients which Covid-19 needs to survive. They found that fat which accumulates inside lung cells is a key component of what the virus needs to reproduce. Depriving the virus of these conditions could mean that the virus could be better controlled, with the researchers claiming it could be reduced to something akin to an ordinary cold.

 

"By understanding how the SARS-CoV-2 controls our metabolism, we can wrestle back control from the virus and deprive it from the very resources it needs to survive," said Prof Yaakov Nahmias from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He continued: "If our findings are borne out by clinical studies, this course of treatment could potentially downgrade Covid-19's severity into nothing worse than a common cold."

 

During the study, which was previewed by the Cell Press a publisher of biomedical journals, including Cell and Neuron scientists screened medications that could interfere with the virus’s ability to reproduce. They found that one cholesterol-lowering drug, fenofibrate, showed promising results which allowed lung cells to burn more fat and therefore depriving the coronavirus of the conditions it needed to survive.

 

After five days of treatment with the drug, the researchers said that the virus had almost completely disappeared in lab studies. Another study published by Cambridge University Press this week found that three in four coronavirus deaths in China had at least one underlying health condition. More than 40 per cent of those had high blood pressure, and more than a quarter had heart disease conditions both linked to high cholesterol.

Couple under house arrest after testing positive for COVID-19

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – A Kentucky couple is under house arrest after one of them tested positive for coronavirus and refused to sign self-quarantine papers.

 

Elizabeth Linscott got tested for COVID-19 because she was planning to go visit her parents.

 

"My grandparents wanted to see me, too, so, just to make sure that, you know, if I tested negative, that they would be okay, everything would be fine," Linscott said.

 

After testing positive but without showing any symptoms, Linscott said the health department contacted her, requesting she sign documents.

 

"I agreed to comply to call the Health Department if I was to go. I was to call the Health Department if I was to leave my house for any reason," she said.

 

But, she chose not to sign.

 

"I had gotten a message from them, a text message that stated, because of your refusal to sign, this is going to be escalated, and law enforcement will be involved," she said.

 

Later that week, the county sheriff greeted Linscott's husband, Isaiah, at their front door.

 

"I open up the door, and there's like eight different people, five different cars, and I'm like 'what the heck's going on?' This guy's in a suit with a mask. It's the Health Department guy, and they have three papers for us. For me, her and my daughter," he said.

 

The couple was ordered to wear ankle monitors. If they travel more than 200 feet, law enforcement will be notified.

 

"We didn't rob a store. We didn't steal something. We didn't hit and run. We didn't do anything wrong," Linscott said.

 

The couple said they never denied self-quarantining. They just didn't agree with the wording of the documents.

 

And, that's exactly what the Director of the Public Health Department told the judge, that I was refusing to self-quarantine because of this, and I'm like, 'that's not the case at all. I never said that,'" she said.

 

Linscott said even without the ankle monitor, she had planned to be cautious, and if she had needed medical care, she would have let healthcare workers know she was infected with the virus.

Some people out there including some media outlets, would like to have you believe that we've had a β€œrocky start”. We not only disagree, that statement is blatantly false.

 

First of all, we weren’t hacked. We were "XSS-attacked" because a schmuck (me) forgot to sanitise the user inputs. That little mistake allowed people with nefarious intentions to input small harmless scripts into the fields where you would normally enter things such as your username. Those harmless scripts are then able to display β€œfunny images” that cover the entire screen of a web-page making it appear as if a website has been taken over completely. It wasn’t.

 

Secondly, the email β€œleak” wasn’t really a leak. It was the same schmuck passing the email addresses through to our email delivery system on the client side instead of server side. Any developer knows that’s not how it should be done and it was the next item on my todo list to fix. And I for one had zero clues that bands of raging orcs were approaching so I went out for lunch with my family and when I got back, the entire house was on fire.

 

Luckily, (and to the detriment of others) the email addresses they found exposed were from fake accounts created by me. Its standard practice in our industry to at least create some fake accounts to make it seem like there’s some activity on a completely new and unknown platform. Because no one understandably ever wants to be the first user to sign up on an empty platform.

 

Mistakes like this happen when you build something new, really fast. I built the entire Unwoke platform over a weekend to see if a concept like this would stick. But I could never in my wildest of dreams have imagined that we'd get this level of attention from the get go. So stay tuned. A lot of new and exciting updates are coming very soon!

 

– So what have we learned?

Nothing. It only confirms what we already knew. That the people shouting are incapable of creation and only capable of destruction. And that a platform like Unwoke is desperately needed and desperately feared by the same people who seek to destroy it.

HARDIN COUNTY, Ky. (WAVE) - A Hardin County couple is now on house arrest after one of them tested positive for COVID-19 and decided not to sign documents agreeing to self-quarantine.

 

Last week, Elizabeth Linscott got tested for the COVID-19 because she was planning to visit her parents in Michigan.

 

β€œMy grandparents wanted to see me, too,” Linscott said. β€œSo just to make sure if they tested negative, that they would be OK, everything would be fine.”

 

After testing positive but without showing any symptoms, Linscott said the health department contacted her and requested she sign documents that will limit her traveling anywhere unless she calls the health department first. She said she chose to not sign the documents.

 

β€œMy part was if I have to go to the ER, if I have to go to the hospital, I’m not going to wait to get the approval to go,” she said.

 

But Linscott said she would take necessary precautions if she needed to go to the hospital, like letting workers know she has recently tested positive for COVID-19.

Cop Arrested for Robbing Over a Dozen People β€” Dept Knew About It, Let Him Keep Job

 

Philadelphia, PA β€” An officer with the Philadelphia Police Department was accused of robbing and assaulting a group of 15 people nearly three years ago and he was not fired until this month. The department did not move to fire him until he was formally charged, even though police were informed of the incident shortly after it happened β€” over three years ago.

 

On December 17th, 2017, 40-year-old Philadelphia police officer Officer Luis Miranda and two of his relatives robbed a group of people who had gathered outside of a local business to gamble.

 

After robbing the 15 individuals outside, Miranda and the other men robbed the business that the group was standing in front of.

 

Miranda was charged with robbery, conspiracy, aggravated assault, and terroristic threats, according to the District Attorney’s Office. He also faces other charges that are entirely unrelated to the robbery, including using police resources for criminal purposes and two drug offenses.

 

Miranda’s two accomplices, Gregorio Esquilin and his son Juan Luis Esquilin, were also arrested and facing charges related to the robbery as well.

 

Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw recognized the charges against Miranda in a statement after the arrest.

 

β€œThe charges against Officer Miranda are disturbing and allege behavior that is in stark contrast to everything that society expects of its police officers. Still, we must not allow the actions of a few to tarnish the reputations of the overwhelming majority of PPD officers that discharge their duties with honor and integrity. It is more obvious than ever that police officers have to repair community trust in order to effectively do their jobs. For that to begin, we must prove that we (are) determined to identify and remove bad actors from within our ranks,” Outlaw said.

 

β€œWhile it is disheartening when those charged with upholding the law choose to break it, I am grateful for all of those who worked to bring these allegations to light,” she added.

 

Police were notified of his involvement in the crimes shortly after they took place, but police decided to allow him to keep his job for years. He was removed from street duty as the Internal Affairs Division conducted an investigation, but was still employed and collecting a paycheck from the department. Paradise Papers

The Paradise Papers are a set of 13.4 million confidential electronic documents relating to offshore investments that were leaked to the German reporters Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer,[1] from the newspaper SΓΌddeutsche Zeitung. The newspaper shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists,[2] and a network of more than 380 journalists. Some of the details were made public on 5 November 2017 and stories are still being released.

 

The documents originate from the legal firm Appleby, the corporate services providers Estera and Asiaciti Trust, and business registries in 19 tax jurisdictions.[3] They contain the names of more than 120,000 people and companies.[4] Among those whose financial affairs are mentioned are, separately, AIG,[5] Prince Charles[6] and Queen Elizabeth II,[7] President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.[8]

 

The released information resulted in scandal, litigation, and loss of position for some of the named, as well as litigation against the media and journalists who published the papers.

 

On 20 October 2017, an anonymous Reddit user hinted at the existence of the Paradise Papers.[9] Later that month, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) approached the offshore law firm Appleby with allegations of wrongdoing. Appleby said that some of its data had been stolen in a cyberattack in the previous year and denied the ICIJ's allegations.[10] After media outlets started reporting on the documents, the company said there was "no evidence of wrongdoing", and they "are a law firm which advises clients on legitimate and lawful ways to conduct their business", and they "do not tolerate illegal behaviour".[11]

 

Appleby stated the firm "was not the subject of a leak but of a serious criminal act", and "this was an illegal computer hack". The company added: "Our systems were accessed by an intruder who deployed the tactics of a professional hacker".[12][13]

 

The documents were acquired by the German newspaper SΓΌddeutsche Zeitung, which had also obtained the Panama Papers in 2016. According to the BBC, the name "Paradise Papers" reflects "the idyllic profiles of many of the offshore jurisdictions whose workings are unveiled", so-called tax havens, or "tax paradises".[3]

 

The data breach comprises some 13.4 million documentsβ€”totaling about 1.4 terabytesβ€”from two offshore service providers, Appleby and Asiaciti Trust, and from the company registers of 19 tax havens.[14] SΓΌddeutsche Zeitung journalists contacted the ICIJ, which has been investigating the documents with 100 media partners. The consortium made the data available to these media partners using Neo4j,[15] a graph-database platform made for connected data, and Linkurious,[16] graph-visualization software. This allowed journalists across the globe to undertake collaborative investigative work. The documents were released by the consortium on 5 November 2017.[8][17]

 

According to the papers, Allergan (the manufacturer of Botox), Allianz, Apple Inc., Facebook, Global Vantedge, McDonald's, Nike, Inc., Siemens, The Walt Disney Company, Twitter, Uber, Walmart, and Yahoo! are among the corporations that own offshore companies.[18][19] According to The Express Tribune, "Apple, Nike, and Facebook avoided billions of dollars in tax using offshore companies."[20]

A great deal of the company's intangible property was exposed around the time of an internal Apple Inc. reorganization of three Irish subsidiaries. The company's 2015 gross domestic product showed a 26% increase, and close to $270 billion of intangible assets suddenly appeared in Ireland as the year began – more than the entire value of all residential property in Ireland. This may indicate that Apple took advantage of a tax incentive known as a capital allowance, which gives Irish companies generous tax breaks for buying intangible property – essentially intellectual property like patents. In other words, Apple (some suggest) transferred them to a subsidiary located in Ireland for the tax incentives, and didn't have to pay any tax on the transaction in Bermuda either, on the value it declared on the property when it sold them to itself.[citation needed]

 

Following a 2013 US Senate investigation, which featured testimony by CEO Tim Cook, Ireland announced that henceforth Irish companies would be required to declare tax residency somewhere in the world. Apple had been paying a lower rate of corporate taxes in Ireland in a so-called sweetheart deal. This attracted the attention of EU regulators as many multinationals were doing the same thing. As the tax break in the Netherlands came to a scheduled end, Apple's law firm, Baker McKenzie, researched island tax havens, asking Appleby officials in numerous jurisdictions to confirm "that an Irish company can conduct management activities … without being subject to taxation in your jurisdiction." Two of the subsidiaries moved to Jersey and took intellectual property with them[citation needed]. The third is receiving tax breaks in Ireland for buying Apple IP from another Apple subsidiary[citation needed].

 

The Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) issued a statement regarding Apple on 7 November 2017.[25] The JFSC confirmed that the two Apple subsidiaries referred to by the media are not Jersey-registered companies and their understanding is that Apple funds relating to these entities have not been remitted to or held in the Island.

 

The JFSC states that it has not seen any of the documentation that the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) claims to hold following the Appleby data breach. If the ICIJ possesses data of a criminal or regulatory nature which relates to business activities in Jersey then the JFSC requested that this information is shared with them and, if there is any evidence of regulatory wrongdoing, then they would investigate and take action if appropriate.

 

The Government of Jersey (States of Jersey) also issued a statement of similar effect on 7 November 2017.[26]

 

It is of further note that the jurisdiction of Jersey has recently been independently assessed as fully compliant with international regulatory guidelines on tax transparency.[27]

 

The EU, under the leadership of Jean-Claude Juncker, threatened to sue Ireland over its tax deals, although Juncker himself had approved similar tax deals in his own country, Luxembourg. Apple paid all of its taxes in Ireland as required by that country so Ireland is appealing the EU decision. HP, Nike, Microsoft and others use the same tax arrangements in Ireland, Luxembourg and other countries,[citation needed] but Apple is frequently cited as a media example.[28] Irish companies are required to pay taxes in Ireland, but if they convince authorities[which?] that they are "managed and controlled" from abroad, the companies may win an exemption.

 

As of November 2017, Apple held $252 billion offshore.[29] However, Apple has previously publicly stated that it reinvests post-tax earnings (generated outside the US) into the global economy via investment funds held offshore.

Against US' Will? UK Continues to Use Equipment of Another Chinese Firm Despite Ditching Huawei

 

In 2017 Sepura, which produces digital mobile radio products, was bought by Chinese company Hytera, in which Beijing government has 2 percent stake. Hytera has been banned by the United States over concerns that its equipment may be used for surveillance.

 

The United Kingdom continues to use equipment produced by the Sepura company, including radios used by police officers, in particular, during protection of members of the royal family, the British media have reported. Systems and applications are used by British ambulance and fire services in airports, despite the fact that Sepura’s owner, Hytera, was blacklisted by the White House, which claims that its equipment may be used by Chinese authorities for espionage and surveillance, a claim which Hytera and Beijing deny.

 

Following the media reports, officials and experts urged the government of UK PM Boris Johnson to conduct a review of Sepura and its devices.

 

"If there is any question whatsoever that equipment provided to our police and Armed Forces would compromise their security in any way, this demands urgent investigation and necessary action. Our American allies are unlikely to have banned this firm without good cause", said Matthew Henderson, Asia studies director at the Henry Jackson Society, a foreign policy think-tank.

 

UK Former Foreign Secretary Sir Malcom Rifkind went further, saying that Downing Street must review all Chinese companies that could affect the country’s national security.

 

"China has changed a lot in the last few months, so we need to have fresh look. The government should treat it as a serious responsibility. They have to look at a particular company, revisit it and see whether you come to the same judgment as last time", said Rifkind.

 

In 2017, Sepura won a $94 million contract to supply 32,000 radios for the London Metropolitan police. The deal was reviewed by government agencies due to the company’s ownership and was given a green light by UK Business Secretary Greg Clark, with Hytera agreeing to random checks from the UK Home Office, the Ministry of Defence and the country’s intelligence agency GCHQ.

 

Hytera is among hi-tech companies, including Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Dahua, Hikvision, that the Trump administration has blocked from selling their products to government agencies, like the FBI. Hytera told the Mail on Sunday, however, that it has sold its kits to US federal agencies via its US division, PowerTrunk, because of a deal the latter signed with the Department of Homeland Security two years ago.

 

The development comes as this week the United Kingdom banned Chinese company Huawei from developing the UK 5G network. The decision followed months of deliberations and the UK government initially allowing the telecom giant to participate. Following months of pressure from the Trump administration, which warned Downing Street that doing business with Huawei may cost Britain its trade agreement with Washington, something London needs following Brexit, the government of Boris Johnson announced that it would not buy the Chinese company’s equipment for its 5G network.

White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Sunday that it's "time for people to go to jail" as part of U.S. Attorney John Durham's probe into FBI misconduct – prompting ex-Trump aide George Papadopoulos to sound a celebratory note on Twitter.

 

The comments came as Fox News learned this weekend that Jennifer Boone, a senior FBI official who oversaw the flawed probe into former Trump adviser Carter Page, has received a major promotion to lead a field office – and the bureau won't say why.

 

Meadows, during his Sunday interview with Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures," also previewed the Trump administration's soon-to-be-released plans for reopening schools and implementing new economic stimulus measures. More details, Meadows said, would be coming this week.

 

However, Meadows' comments on the Durham probe were among his most suggestive yet. They followed Attorney General Bill Barr's comments to Fox News earlier this year that Durham's findings have been "very troubling" and that familiar names are currently being probed.

 

"I think the American people are expecting indictments," Meadows told anchor Maria Bartiromo. "I expect indictments based on the evidence I've seen. Lindsey Graham did a good job in getting that out. We know that they not only knew that there wasn't a case, but they continued to investigate and spy."

Wilbur Louis Ross Jr. (born November 28, 1937) is an American investor and the current United States Secretary of Commerce. Bush slapped a 30% tariff on many types of imported steel. A year later, WL Ross & Co acquired the assets of bankrupt Bethlehem Steel. In November 2017, leaked documents known as the Paradise Papers showed that, during his confirmation hearings, Ross had failed to clearly disclose a financial interest in Navigator Gas, a shipping company which transports petrochemicals for Russian gas and petrochemicals company Sibur.[79][80] Ross had failed to clearly disclose ties to Russian interests during his confirmation hearings.[80] While his confirmation was pending, Ross promised in a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics to cut ties "with more than 80 financial entities in which he has interests". This letter played a key role in securing his confirmation. However, according to the leaked documents, while he did divest some holdings, he did not disclose the full extent of those he retained.

 

Speaking about his financial ties to Navigator, Ross said the media was making "a lot more out of it than it deserves" and "There is nothing wrong with it. The fact that it happens to be called a Russian company doesn't mean there is any evil in it."[81] A spokesman for Ross stated that Ross has never met Shamalov, Timchenko or Mikhelson and that Ross "recuses himself from any matters focused of transoceanic shipping vessels, but has been generally supportive of the administration's sanctions of Russian and Venezuelan entities".[79]
