Just finished watching the replay of Fareed Zakaria's desperate attempt to avoid the inevitable. I'm not surprised he ended by mentioning Richard Hofstadter's "The Paranoid Style in American Politics".
I'm also not surprised he failed to mention that this idea was first put out in a lecture on Novermber 21, 1963. But it is somewhat strange, given that the show focused a big segment on what happened the next day.
