"SANTIAGO, Chile (ChurchMilitant.com) - A former priest accused of rape in the cathedral of Santiago de Chile has committed suicide.
According to Chilean radio station Bío Bío, Tito Rivera Muñoz ended his life on July 19. The ex-priest was accused of raping a man inside the Santiago Metropolitan Cathedral in 2015.
The archbishopric of the Chilean capital issued a statement upon the death of the former priest:
The archbishopric of Santiago reports the death of Tito Rivera Muñoz, who was a priest of the Church of Santiago. His death occurred on the night of this Sunday, at 68 years of age. Tito Rivera had presented his priestly dispensation to Pope Francis in 2019, which was accepted in the context of a canonical criminal process for crimes against the Sixth Commandment of the Decalogue, with adults.
"The archbishop of Santiago has sent the request to dismiss him from priestly ministry to the Holy See, recommending to the Holy Father that it be processed quickly," the archdiocese of Santiago said in 2019.
The story began unfolding publicly in early March 2015 after Radio Bío Bío announced a criminal complaint made by Rivera's alleged victim, Daniel Rojas Alvarez.
Rojas went to the cathedral to get financial help to buy medicine for his daughter, as reported in the complaint.
According to Rojas' testimony, he met Rivera who led him upstairs and down a long corridor to one of the cathedral's bedrooms, where the priest offered him a glass of water.
Soon after, Rojas began to feel sick and found he could no longer control his body. Unable to move, Rojas was then raped by Fr. Rivera.
Rojas claimed afterwards he attempted to report the abuse to the archdiocese, but was turned away each time. Once, he says, he was kicked out and threatened by a priest who worked at the archdiocese's pastoral complaint office."

"NEW YORK — NEW YORK — St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the most famous churches in the United States, has long depended on tourists and office workers to fill its pews and its collection plates. But now that the coronavirus has left midtown Manhattan largely deserted, it is facing a $4 million budget shortfall that may threaten its ability to pay its bills.
The cathedral sits in one of the least residential parts of the city, and its rector estimates that 90% of those who typically worship there do not live nearby. The pandemic has kept visitors away for months, depriving the cathedral of revenue and leaving it marooned in a sea of empty office buildings, vacant hotels and boarded-up luxury retailers.
Despite donations, federal coronavirus relief funds and its status as the crown jewel of the powerful Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, the situation has imperiled the cathedral’s ability to pay operating costs like utilities and payroll for dozens of employees, including musicians who perform at Mass and maintenance workers who clean and disinfect the pews.
“We have never had anything like this before,” Monsignor Robert Ritchie, the rector of the cathedral, said of the budget shortfall, which is equivalent to about one-quarter of the cathedral’s annual income.
He said the problem had been compounded by the lack of fundraising options available at a time when social gatherings are subject to public health restrictions."

"Every tech platform has two policies about what they will allow: the policy that’s written, and the policy that’s enforced. Ideally there would be no gap between these, but in practice it almost can’t be helped.
To take one dumb example, the embryonic audio social network Clubhouse posted its first set of community guidelines the other week. One of these rules says “we prohibit the spread of or attempts to spread false information or news.” In theory, this means that only the truth is allowed on Clubhouse. Not a bad policy, really, but when you’re building a network that someday anyone will be able to use to essentially broadcast their phone calls, I imagine that Clubhouse will find it extremely hard to enforce. Of course people will lie on Clubhouse. They will lie all the time. The question is who will be punished for doing so.
I thought about all this on Tuesday night after reading that Twitter had banned 7,000 accounts and put restrictions on 150,000 more related to the sprawling conspiracy theory slash alternate reality game slash religion QAnon. Ben Collins and Brandy Zadrozny had the scoop at NBC News:
Twitter will stop recommending accounts and content related to QAnon, including material in email and follow recommendations, and it will take steps to limit circulation of content in features like trends and search. The action will affect about 150,000 accounts, said a spokesperson, who asked to remain unnamed because of concerns about the targeted harassment of social media employees.
The sweeping enforcement action will ban QAnon-related terms from appearing in trending topics and the platform’s search feature, ban known QAnon-related URLs and prohibit “swarming” of people who are baselessly targeted by coordinated harassment campaigns pushed by QAnon followers.
The ban on “swarming” is particularly significant. Often conspiracy theorists will falsely declare various celebrities and politicians as being at the heart of some lunatic Satan-worshiping scheme, and their followers will descend on the timelines of the accused — and their friends and family — to wreak havoc.
And yet, how will swarming be detected? Twitter updated its policy by tweeting it, which means the update itself was brief to the point of being opaque. You will be suspending if you are found to be “coordinating abuse around individual victims.” OK. But what if you’re just one of thousands of accounts in the victim’s mentions tweeting “stop eating babies”? I don’t see anything in the policy about that — perhaps because, from an enforcement, perspective, it could be difficult to determine what makes abuse “coordinated.” As Evelyn Douek notes here, Twitter itself has not yet defined what it means by coordination."

“A conspiracy charge could widen the circle of people charged, but [a criminal statute] would have to be clearly identifiable,” he said.
Several FBI officials, including Comey as director, were involved in the initial FISA application for a warrant to spy on Page. So a possible charge is conspiracy to violate the surveillance law, the University of California’s Yoo said.
Comey, a vocal Trump critic since the president fired him in May 2017, has said he trusted those who worked under him.
“I don’t think it’s a great defense to say, ‘I approved the use of extraordinary surveillance measures on an American and I didn’t read it,’” Yoo told The Daily Signal.
“I was involved with FISA in the [George W.] Bush years, and I’m pretty sure people read them,” he said. “As a mid-level person myself, I wanted to make sure they read them so they would know what they are doing.”
Yoo also cited a White House meeting in the closing days of the Obama administration in which Comey, Rice, Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates discussed the FBI’s Flynn investigation.
“You’re talking about the head of national intelligence, the White House national security adviser, they could all be potentially involved,” Yoo said. “You already have reports of this meeting at the White House … in early January with Comey and Biden and Susan Rice.”
“Somebody potentially might have known,” he said, about possibly improper actions to target the Trump presidency.
Judicial Watch’s Fitton, not bullish about indictments, said a conspiracy charge is possible if Durham can show that multiple individuals knowingly provided false information to the FISA court.
“There may be charges for conspiracy. That only takes two,” Fitton said. "
