Comical that Germany opposes Russia being re-integrated back into the G7 yet is continuing full speed ahead into a gas deal (Nord Stream 2) with Russia.

Can anyone provide a balanced concept for how these two separate but not mutually exclusive positions can be taken?

Obviously the same question could be asked why would the U.S. want to re-instate Russia into the G7 but would oppose the gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. Still... a balanced concept would apply to either, if there is one.
