Peter Nygard: FBI raids fashion mogul HQ in sex trafficking probe

US agents have raided fashion executive Peter Nygard's Manhattan offices as part of a sex-trafficking investigation.

The FBI and New York police executed a search warrant on Tuesday, a spokesman for the US Attorney's Office said.

The raid comes as Mr Nygard, 77, is facing a sexual assault and trafficking lawsuit, filed by 10 women and girls earlier this month.

He has denied allegations of wrongdoing.

The Finnish-Canadian multimillionaire, who has been linked to Prince Andrew, has been the subject of an investigation by the child exploitation FBI task force and New York police for the last five months.

He was reportedly the subject of a previous FBI investigation for sex trafficking in 2015 and 2017.

A spokesman for Mr Nygard said the fashion executive, who owns Nygard International brands, "welcomes the federal investigation and expects his name to be cleared. He has not been charged, is not in custody and is cooperating with the investigation."

Mr Nygard is estimated to be worth upwards of $700m (£538m). Brands owned by his company include Bianca Nygard, Tan Jay, ALIA and SLIMS.

What do we know about the lawsuit?

The sex abuse lawsuit was filed on 13 February by 10 unnamed female plaintiffs against Mr Nygard and his associated companies.

The lawsuit accuses him of sexually assaulting "young, impressionable, and often impoverished children and women" after luring them with cash and false promises of lucrative modelling opportunities. Some of the plaintiffs are minors.

Mr Nygard is accused of using alcohol, drugs, force or other means of coercion "to engage in commercial sex acts with these children and women".

Most of the assault and sex trafficking allegations took place in the Bahamas, where Mr Nygard has lived for years.

The lawsuit, which details complaints dating back four decades, also claims Mr Nygard would bribe officials to hide evidence of his crimes.

It alleges he kept a "database of potential victims" on his company's servers with details on over 7,500 women and underage girls.

The case has brought forth echoes of other recent cases of wealthy and powerful men involved in sex abuse.

Mr Nygard often hosted celebrities and politicians at his properties to promote his brands, including former President George H W Bush and actors Robert De Niro and Sean Connery.

Prince Andrew is friendly with Mr Nygard, and has been photographed with his family and the sportswear tycoon.

Though there is no suggestion he knew of allegations against Mr Nygard, the Duke of York was forced to step back from public life amid furore over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, a sex abuser.

A spokesman for the fashion tycoon said the claims against him were "completely false, without foundation and are vigorously denied".

"Peter Nygard looks forward to fully exposing this scam and, once and for all, clearing his name," his spokesman said.

CNN's Stelter accused of breaching network's confidentiality agreement with Sandmann: 'May cost him his job'

CNN's chief media correspondent Brian Stelter may have landed himself in hot water, according to the attorney of Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann.

Last week, Sandmann announced that The Washington Post settled the $250 million defamation lawsuit he filed over its botched coverage of a viral confrontation with a Native American elder that had portrayed the Kentucky teen as the aggressor. This followed the multi-million dollar settlement CNN made with the teenager back in January.

However, Sandmann's attorney Lin Wood spotted a retweet from Stelter of a tweet written by attorney Mark Zaid, who speculated about how much money the teen walked away with from the settlement.

"Those with zero legal experience (as far as I can tell) should not be conjecturing on lawsuits they know nothing about. What kind of journalism is that?" Zaid asked. "I've litigated defamation cases. [Sandmann] was undoubtedly paid nuisance value settlement & nothing more."

Wood accused the "Reliable Sources" host of breaching his network's own confidentiality agreement with his client.

"This retweet by @brianstelter may have cost him his job at @CNN. It is called breach of confidentiality agreement. Brian Stelter is a liar. I know how to deal with liars," Wood tweeted with a screenshot of Stelter's retweet.

Sandmann knocked the media guru, tweeting "Brian Stelter just can’t learn some basic lessons over at CNN."

"I can’t decide if it’s worse to be Brian Stelter or believe Brian Stelter. He was never in any court hearing or meeting I was. So why does he act like he knows anything?" Sandmann added.

Court seizes fashion mogul Peter Nygard's opulent Bahamian estate over illegal dredging

The luxurious Caribbean estate owned by Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been seized by the Supreme Court of the Bahamas, the latest development in a years-long dispute over illegal dredging of Nygard’s beachfront property that has raised the ire of an environmental group backed by the designer’s billionaire neighbours.

The seizure follows years of court actions between Nygard and his next-door neighbour, American billionaire hedge fund manager Louis Bacon. For more than a decade, the two have been locked in a bitter, bizarre conflict that has included allegations of a murder-for-hire plot and a staged Ku Klux Klan rally, in addition to the more mundane environmental concerns.

As of Friday, Nygard no longer has access to his estate at Nygard Cay, according to Fred Smith, a lawyer with Save the Bays, an organization working to protect the country’s marine environment from residential and industrial development.

The court ordered the seizure after Nygard failed to pay nearly $3 million in legal fees owed to Save the Bays, which has been fighting for years to stop him dredging the sea floor around his estate. Smith said Nygard has roughly doubled the size of his property over 30 years, enlarging his own beach while starving the natural flow of sand to neighbouring properties and a nearby national park.

Smith said Nygard has repeatedly ignored a 2013 injunction banning him from dredging, which has led to three contempt of court convictions against the entrepreneur that could lead to jail time. “Mr. Nygard considers himself to be completely above the law in the Bahamas,” Smith said. “He’s been running his little Republic of Nygard since the 1980s here.”

Nygard, in his 70s, did not respond to a request for comment. In a statement last year, a spokesperson said “the removal and stockpiling of sand from the Nygard Cay marina was carried out in good faith in full accordance with the conditions of a government-issued permit.”

It really isn’t a little petty squabble between Mr. Nygard and Mr. Bacon. … This is Nygard demonstrating that he considers himself to be a law unto himself

Nygard has previously claimed that Save the Bays is a “front” for Bacon, whom he claims is trying to take over his property. “Louis Bacon has always wanted Nygard Cay for himself and Mr. Nygard has never been interested in selling his home,” a lawyer said in a 2014 statement.

Bacon is a board member of Save the Bays, though Smith said the organization doesn’t exist solely to fight Nygard. “We were created to deal with issues in the Clifton Bay area, and Mr. Nygard was one of the main culprits,” he said.

Nygard and Bacon, who own adjacent properties in Lyford Cay, a gated community on New Providence island, have been embroiled in a dispute for years that now encompasses more than a dozen legal actions. According to a 2016 Vanity Fair story, the conflict began with a slight drainage issue in 2007, but has escalated dramatically. In 2016, Bacon filed a lawsuit alleging Nygard had tried to hire criminals to kill him and Smith. A lawyer of Nygard’s once organized a parade attempting to link Bacon to the Ku Klux Klan.

“This has become very serious,” Smith said. “It really isn’t a little petty squabble between Mr. Nygard and Mr. Bacon. … This is Nygard demonstrating that he considers himself to be a law unto himself.”

Nygard, whom Vanity Fair described as the “Hugh Hefner of down-market retail,” was born in Finland and grew up in Winnipeg, where he founded his women’s clothing company in 1967. Nygard International now has more than 170 stores across North America.

His Mayan-inspired estate in the Bahamas features carved dragons, giant statues of nude women and what he claims is the largest sauna in the world, according to the magazine.

But the estate, once known for its lavish parties, is much quieter today. An electrical fire in 2009 destroyed many of the structures, and Nygard hasn’t been able to get permits to rebuild, thanks to the lawsuits against him. Smith said Nygard has only been in the Bahamas a handful of times in the last couple of years.

Bacon has also left the island to return to New York, and visits infrequently. Smith said he feared for his safety.

The woman said she wasn't just bothered by the hedonism she witnessed, but also the shoddy treatment of employees at the compound.

"There would be workers standing on two-by-fours on top of rocks washing the windows — and there were a lot of windows there," she said. "But, if they were to complain, there were 20 people in line to take their jobs.

"It didn't matter which way you looked, there were always people trying to do what they could to survive… I was glad to leave."

More than a decade later, the woman said just hearing the Nygard name or seeing clothes from his fashion lines takes her back to those few weeks.

"I still wear his clothing, I like the quality of some of his clothes," she said. "But it's not somewhere I want to go back and visit."
