Peter Nygard: FBI raids fashion mogul HQ in sex trafficking probe

US agents have raided fashion executive Peter Nygard's Manhattan offices as part of a sex-trafficking investigation.

The FBI and New York police executed a search warrant on Tuesday, a spokesman for the US Attorney's Office said.

The raid comes as Mr Nygard, 77, is facing a sexual assault and trafficking lawsuit, filed by 10 women and girls earlier this month.

He has denied allegations of wrongdoing.

The Finnish-Canadian multimillionaire, who has been linked to Prince Andrew, has been the subject of an investigation by the child exploitation FBI task force and New York police for the last five months.

He was reportedly the subject of a previous FBI investigation for sex trafficking in 2015 and 2017.

What do we know about the lawsuit?

Walgreens CEO to step down

Stefano Pessina has decided to exit the role. He will become executive chairman when a new chief executive is appointed.

(Bloomberg)—Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. said that Stefano Pessina plans to step down as chief executive officer, a move that comes as the drugstore giant faces the pandemic and longer-term shifts in the pharmacy business.

Pessina will assume the role of executive chairman after Walgreens appoints a new CEO, the company said in a statement. James Skinner will step down as executive chairman but plans to remain on the board to help with the leadership transition.

Walgreens shares were down about 2.5 percent this morning. Since the start of this year, the stock had declined 33%.

Pessina, 79, orchestrated the merger between Walgreens and Alliance Boots, the European pharmacy giant. He became CEO of the combined Walgreens Boots Alliance in 2015, shortly after completing the deal. Along with rival CVS Health Corp., Walgreens dominates the pharmacy business in the U.S., with more than 9,000 stores across the country.

Pessina owns more than 16% of the Deerfield, Illinois-based company, accounting for the bulk of his $8.5 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Despite Walgreens’ mass and ubiquity, investors have been skeptical of its ability to compete in a market where insurers are squeezing pharmacies’ profits and online retailers are luring customers away from brick-and-mortar stores. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic has only heightened those concerns.

Earlier this month, Walgreens said it would cut 4,000 jobs in the U.K. and suspend stock buybacks, citing the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on its business around the world. Traffic in its stores had fallen sharply as the virus spread, and a decline in routine and elective medical care had weighed on prescription volumes.

Over decades of deal-making, Pessina turned his family’s Italian wholesale pharmaceutical business into the largest retail pharmacy in the U.S. and Europe.

He previously ran Alliance Boots, which he acquired with KKR & Co. in 2007. The transaction came at the height of the buyout boom and underscored the difficulty of financing jumbo take-private deals, as banks struggled to find buyers for the loans to pay for the transaction.

Walgreens’ board will start a search for Pessina’s successor, the company said. It’s unclear who might take the reins. The head of Walgreens’ U.S. business, Richard Ashworth, left earlier this year to take a job as CEO of Tivity Health Inc. after nearly 30 years with the drugstore chain.

Walgreens’ decision not to immediately name a successor suggests the board is open to considering a variety of candidates, said Jefferies analyst Brian Tanquilut. The person selected will signal the strategic direction Walgreens plans to take, whether that’s deeper into retail or health care, Tanquilut said.

CVS spent $68 billion to acquire health insurer Aetna in 2018. Pessina has instead dabbled in partnerships, such as one with Laboratory Corp of America Holdings, to bring health services into stores without buying companies outright.

Walgreens earlier this month said it would invest $1 billion in VillageMD to open hundreds of primary-care clinics in its drugstores over the next few years.

Global Coronavirus Deaths Surpass 650,000; US May Hit 219,000 Death Toll By November

Daily deaths from COVID-19 are on the rise worldwide, averaging more than 5,000 per day thus far in July, WHO says

The U.S. death toll is approaching 150,000 and is projected to hit 219,000 total deaths by November

Arizona, California, Florida starting to see some signs of relief from Memorial Day resurgence

Known global deaths due to COVID-19 moved past the 650,000 mark Monday, with an average of more than 5,000 per day so far for the month of July, according to the World Health Organization.

The widening death toll is being driven by mounting fatalities in Asia, Europe and the Americas. The U.S., which leads the world in total cases and deaths, saw a new spike in deaths of more than 1,000 per day over a four-day period last week as the death toll approaches 150,000 nationwide.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, the independent global health research center at the University of Washington, projects 219,000 U.S. deaths by Nov. 1. That number could be reduced to 186,000 if a universal mask mandate were in place.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) projects 175,000 deaths in the U.S. by Aug. 15, which could be an underestimate based on the current rapid rate of infections.

The U.S. has 4.4 million COVID-19 cases in total since the pandemic began and is still in the throes of the Memorial Day resurgence. The surge in daily and total cases is showing some signs of leveling off in some of the hardest-hit states like Arizona, California and Florida.

WHO reports an increasing number of infections in more countries, including China, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Mexico, Peru, Colombia and Argentina. It noted the resurgence is leading some countries to again consider closing their borders. However, WHO disapproves of locking down entire countries.

"Continuing to keep international borders sealed is not necessarily a sustainable strategy for the world's economy, for the world's poor, or for anybody else," said Dr. Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program. He contends a "global one-size-fits-all policy" is impossible because outbreaks develop differently in different countries.

On Monday, WHO also said its experts will meet this week to discuss downgrading COVID-19's emergency status. On Jan. 30, WHO declared COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and issued a set of temporary recommendations.

On July 24, WHO reported a record-setting single-day increase in total global COVID-19 cases over a 24-hour span with 284,196, shattering the previous high mark of 259,848 set on July 18. It also reported the second highest single-day global death toll of 9,753, just shy of the record 9,797 deaths set on April 30.
