Florida Couple Arrested For Refusing to Quarantine ā€“ Property Manager Videotaped Couple Walking Their Dog and Gave Footage to Police

A couple living in the Florida Keys were arrested Wednesday morning for refusing to quarantine after testing positive for the Coronavirus.

Jose Interian, 24, and Yohana Gonzalez, 26, are now facing second-degree misdemeanor charges for violating isolation rules for a quarantine.

The Miami Herald reported that a neighbor caught the couple on video walking around outside of their home and ā€œgoing about normal life functions.ā€

Neighbors were furious after they saw the couple walking their dog, washing the car and going to the grocery store.

The videotape was then given to police and authorities moved in and arrested the couple.

The Miami Herald reported:

Two Key West residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were jailed Wednesday night after defying a quarantine order from the state health department, the city manager said.

Freire posted on his Facebook page July 14 that he had tested positive for the virus, urging anyone who had been in contact with him in the past week to get tested.

But he and Gonzalez failed to follow orders to remain at home and wear face masks around others, according to an isolation order issued to both on July 21 by the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County that directed them to stay at home for 14 days.

On Wednesday, the property manager at their apartment complex reported to Key West police that the two were not following the order, saying Freire had walked his dog, gone to the grocery store and washed his car. Both had been seen leaving and returning home without wearing face masks, according to a police report.

The property manager gave police some video footage of the couple. It was taken by a surveillance camera located in a common area of the complex.

ā€œAn officer took the video to the judge and the judge signed the warrant,ā€ Key West City Manager Greg Veliz said.

What Ad-Boycott? Facebook Shares Jump After Crushing Every Major Metric

Heading into earnings tonight, Facebook had been making plenty of headlines on twitter as an increasing number of virtue-signalers claim they are boycotting ad spend on the social media network (and not merely cutting costs amid COVID).

"We're glad to be able to provide small businesses the tools they need to grow and be successful online during these challenging times," said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO.

"And we're proud that people can rely on our services to stay connected when they can't always be together in person."

There appears to be zero impact from the ad-boycott (though the boycott didn't technically start until July 1, the first day of the third quarter, so it's unlikely there's any impact visible in these numbers) as Facebook smashed the ball out of the park, beating on every major metric:

Amazon Soars After Smashing Expectations, Guiding Sharply Higher

Heading into today's earnings call juggernaut which sees almost $5 trillion in market cap report among just 4 companies (AAPL $1.7TN, $1.2TN, GOOGL $1TN, AMZN FB $670BN) Amazon had emerged as the one FAAMG stock that was viewed as the cleanest clean shirt among the uber-mega-cap techs (unlike Facebook and Google it has no risky ad exposure; unlike Apple it has no risky China exposure) and despite a drop in its consensus earnings estimatesā€¦

ā€¦ the stock has soared 60% in 2020 hitting a new all time high, and a record market cap of $1.5 trillion, more than $300 billion higher than where it was during its last, Q1 earnings calls (which was a disappointment due to the company's forecast of shrinking profits) on expectations that the online retailer would be the biggest beneficiary of the transformation in US society to one where most work from home and just order random stuff online while conventional retailers rush to file for bankruptcy.

Which is not to say that the other megatechs have done poorly, on the contrary, the Nasdaq has rallied more than 50% from the depths of the market rout in March and is trading near a record high, thanks almost entirely just to five stocks, among which all the four companies reporting today including Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Alphabet, which are also among the top 5 heaviest-weighted stocks in the S&P 500. Needless to say, an outsized move in any or all of the four would tilt the whole market.

Apple Soars Above $400 For First Time On Blockbuster Earnings; Announces 4 For 1 Stock Split

Heading into the current, Q3 quarter - typically one of Appleā€™s slowest of the year - Wall Street was expecting Apple to report revenue of $52.2 billion, or another slight decline from last year, even though Apple didnā€™t provide guidance for the quarter and is unlikely to do so again until the coronavirus pandemic ends. Despite the slowdown, AAPL shares rallied a whopping 43% from April through June, Appleā€™s best quarterly performance in eight years (during what is typically its slowest quarter). As Bloomberg notes, analysts cited everything from the iPhone makerā€™s App Store revenue growth, the potential of its wearable products, stock buybacks and the potential of its services business as helping outweigh the impact of the coronavirus. The biggest driver of optimism is the release a 5G iPhone, expected later this year. At the same time, while looking at the current quarter, analysts were expecting a continuation of recent trends, including a sizable dip in iPhone sales, at revenue of over $21.3 billion, but a jump in services, with revenue of $13.12 billion.

So with that in mind, moments ago AAPL joined the rest of the megatech sector in reporting absolutely blockbuster results largely boosted by the record stimulus - in both the US and across the world - which included:

Revenue growth of a huge 11%, amid expectations of a decline

iPhone sales were up, on projections of a decline

All other categories ā€“ Mac, iPad, Wearables, Services - grew

Breitbart News Appeals Twitter Account Suspension, ā€˜Reviewā€™ Drags Out Beyond 48 Hours

The official Twitter account of Breitbart News remains locked and unable to post, because it was used to post a video of a press conference featuring Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and frontline doctors sharing their views and opinions on coronavirus and the medical response to the pandemic. The platform has yet to respond to Breitbartā€™s appeal after nearly 48 hours.

Twitter is punishing a news organization for live-streaming a press conference held by a congressman and licensed medical doctors.

Breitbart News lodged an appeal with Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. Nearly 48 hours later, Twitter has yet to respond or restore Breitbartā€™s ability to post. Twitter has not replied to a Breitbart News request for comment on how long such a review is expected to take.

Twitter took down the video and locked Breitbartā€™s account shortly after similar censorship by YouTube and Facebook.

On the latter platform, Breitbartā€™s video accumulated over 17 million views and was the top-performing post on the social network globally. On YouTube, the video accumulated over 80,000 views before being taken down by the Google-owned platform.

The video showed a press conference held by the organization Americaā€™s Frontline Doctors, organized and sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots. Since the video of the conference went viral, it appears that Americaā€™s Frontline Doctors have had their website taken offline.

Twitter emails Breitbart News with notice of the suspension:

Rhode Island Gov. Raimondo: Trump Is ā€˜Insaneā€™ ā€” He Is ā€˜Losing His Mindā€™

Thursday, in an interview with WPRI, Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo (D) said that both President Donald Trumpā€™s tweet floating delaying the 2020 election and his sending federal offices to quell protests in Portland has led her to the conclusion that the president is ā€œinsane.ā€

When asked about the tweet, Raimondo, ā€œItā€™s insane ā€” like, heā€™s insane. He has no authority to do that as far as I know,ā€

She continued, ā€œHe is losing his mind. You know, heā€™s sending in federal agents into states for no apparent reason. You know weā€™ve never seen a president do that, certainly not in our lifetimes. Itā€™s essentially sending in the presidentā€™s militia into a state over the objections of the governor and law enforcement in that state.ā€

Walmart to Lay Off Hundreds of Corporate Workers

Walmart Inc. is joining the ranks of Macyā€™s and L Brands in eliminating hundreds of corporate jobs in order to cut costs.

Employees in the mega-retailerā€™s store planning, logistics, and real estate units have reportedly received pink slips, reported Bloomberg Thursday:

Some of those affected were told in person, while others learned their fate over a Zoom call, said the people, who asked not to be identified because they arenā€™t authorized to speak publicly. Conversations with those impacted will continue throughout the week. Those who lose their jobs will be paid until the end of January, when Walmartā€™s fiscal year ends and annual bonuses get doled out, according to one of the people.

John Furner, director of Walmartā€™s U.S. operations, told Bloomberg that more information about the companyā€™s restructuring would be forthcoming after communications with associates are completed.

ā€œWe are continuing on our journey to create an omni-channel organization within our Walmart U.S. business and weā€™re making some additional changes this week,ā€ a spokesperson said, adding that efforts will seek to boost ā€œinnovation, speed and productivity.ā€

While Walmartā€™s sales during the coronavirus pandemic have surged, it is no longer opening new stores in the United States, and has been streamlining its operations for several years. Recently, it closed down its Jet.com e-commerce unit.

According to the report, Walmartā€™s stock climbed 10% this year through Wednesday, ahead of the S&P 500 index. However, it fell 1% to $129.38 per share Thursday morning in New York.

Layoffs are occurring in merchandizing, transportation, human resources, and product design, Bloomberg was told.

L Brands Inc., which owns Victoriaā€™s Secret and Bath & Body Works, also announced this week it would be laying off 850 office workers, about 15 percent of its corporate staff.

Last month, Macyā€™s Inc. announced the elimination of 3,900 corporate and management positions as well.

Mitt Romney: ā€˜Iā€™m a Fan of Voting by Mailā€™

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) expressed strong support for vote-by-mail on Thursday following President Trumpā€™s prediction that universal mail-in voting would result in the ā€œmost inaccurate and fraudulentā€ election in history.

ā€œIā€™m a fan of voting by mail. Secondly, of course we are going to have an election on time. Itā€™s unthinkable that that would not be the case,ā€ Romney said after Trump asked if the nation should ā€œdelay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely voteā€:

The presidentā€™s remark coincides with several stories pointing to the inaccuracies and risks associated with universal mail-in voting. On Thursday, the president shared a video of a CBS investigation in Philadelphia involving the use of mock ballots to stage an election. The ballots were lost throughout the process, and while most were recovered, the station found that of 100 ballots, 97 ultimately arrived.

ā€œThat means three people who tried to vote by mail in our mock election were, in fact, disenfranchised by mail,ā€ the outlet found:

ā€œMail-In Voting is already proving to be a catastrophic disaster. Even testing areas are way off. The Dems talk of foreign influence in voting, but they know that Mail-In Voting is an easy way for foreign countries to enter the race,ā€ Trump said on Thursday.

ā€œEven beyond that, thereā€™s no accurate count!ā€ he added:

Cody, a deceased cat hailing from Atlanta, made headlines this month after receiving a voter registration form by mail, reigniting the debate over the risk of fraud in universal mail-in voting.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger blamed the mix-up on third-party groups.

ā€œThird-party groups all over the country are targeting Georgia to help register qualified individuals. This group makes you wonder what these out-of-town activists are really doing. Make no mistake about it, this office is dedicated to investigating all types of fraud,ā€ his office stated.

Democrats, however, are continuing in their calls for universal vote-by-mail, particularly for the 2020 election. Trump challenger Joe Biden (D) has already decided that the president is ā€œgoing to try to indirectly steal the election by arguing that mail-in ballots donā€™t work.ā€

A recent NPR analysis revealed that 65,000 absentee and mail-in ballots have been tossed in primary elections due to late arrivals.

A plurality of American adults, 49 percent, believe that vote-by-mail is ā€œvulnerable to significant levels of fraud,ā€ a Washington Post/ABC News poll found.
