Seattle City Council moving to defund 'racist' police department & replace it with ‘community-led' public safety system

Seattle lawmakers are attempting to completely defund the city’s police department and replace it with a new “civilian-led” public safety system in response to ongoing Black Lives Matter protests.

The Seattle City Council has already come under fire this week for proposing a 50 percent cut to the police department’s budget — a proposal that prompted hundreds of citizens to express their concerns during a council meeting on Wednesday.

Yet, newly revealed legislation now shows that the council may be doing a lot more than simply stripping police of half their funding. Lawmakers are moving to completely abolish the police department and replace it with a system of “civilian-led community safety and violence prevention.”

US Homeland Security Halts Spying on Reporters Covering Protests, Spokesman Says

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US Homeland Security Chad Wolf ordered his agency’s intelligence directorate to immediately stop collecting information and publishing reports on reporters covering violent anti-government protests in the city of Portland, Spokesman Alexei Woltornist said in a press release on Friday.

"Upon learning about the practice, Acting Secretary Wolf directed the DHS Intelligence & Analysis Directorate to immediately discontinue collecting information involving members of the press. In no way does the Acting Secretary condone this practice and he has immediately ordered an inquiry into the matter," Woltornist said.

During the previous week, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intelligence unit disseminated three Open Source Intelligence Reports to federal law enforcement agencies and others, summarizing tweets written by two journalists — a reporter for the New York Times and the editor in chief of the blog Lawfare — and noting they had published leaked, albeit unclassified documents about DHS operations in Portland, the Washington Post reported.

The Post cited a memo by the top DHS intelligence official, which was tweeted by the editor of Lawfare. The memo personnel relied on "FINTEL," [financial intelligence], as well as finished intelligence "Baseball cards" of arrested protesters to try to understand their motivations and plans.

Trump scores win over Stormy Daniels' libel suit

An appeals court the president often pillories hands him victory over a prominent foe

President Donald Trump scored a legal victory Friday as a federal appeals court upheld a lower court ruling tossing out a libel lawsuit filed against him by adult film star Stormy Daniels over a tweet Trump fired off about her in 2018.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals accepted arguments by Trump’s lawyers that he was merely offering his opinion and not leveling any factual claims of his own when he issued the tweet casting doubt on her claims that she faced intimidation as she prepared to go public with allegations that she and Trump had a sexual encounter.

A three-judge panel unanimously ruled that Trump’s tweet amounted to an opinion about another Twitter user’s message suggesting that a sketch Daniels helped prepare of a man who allegedly intimidated her in a casino parking lot looked much like a photo of Daniels’ ex-husband.

Supreme Court denies request to halt construction of the border wall

A number of groups, including the ACLU and Sierra Club, had asked the high court to get involved

The Supreme Court by a 5-4 vote has denied a request to halt construction of President Trump’s border wall over environmental concerns.

A number of groups, including the ACLU and Sierra Club, had asked the high court to get involved again after the justices last year cleared the way for the administration to use military funds for construction while the case played out in the courts.

A federal appeals court had ruled against the administration last month, but the justices, for now, have given another temporary victory to the administration.

Thai police nationwide to be trained to handle human trafficking, as cases rise

Anti-trafficking chief Jaruvat Vaisaya says officers based outside Bangkok have a limited ability to handle such cases

Thailand says it rescued a record 1,807 trafficking victims last year, many of whom were Myanmar migrant workers bound for Malaysia

Thailand’s top anti-trafficking police officer has vowed to boost training for the police force nationwide to better respond to a rising number of cases of sexual exploitation and forced labour outside Bangkok.

Police lieutenant general Jaruvat Vaisaya, director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Centre under the Royal Thai Police, said Thailand had a shortage of officers based outside the capital with expertise in investigating cases of human trafficking.

“We have found an increase in cases in provincial areas where we couldn’t send our staff (from Bangkok) in time,” Jaruvat said in an interview ahead of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30.
