James Murdoch Resigns from News Corporation, the Parent Company of FOX News Over “Differences in Editorial Content”

James Murdoch tendered his resignation from the Board of Directors of News Corporation, the parent company of FOX News.

Rubert Murdoch stepped down as the CEO of FOX in June 2011 and handed the reins over to his son James.

ames Murdoch’s wife Kathryn Murdoch is an outspoken leftist who works for the Clinton Climate Initiative.

The resignation went into effect today.

In a filing to US regulators, he said he also disagreed with some “strategic decisions” made by the company,

Noble Files For Bankruptcy One Month After Rushing To Pay Executive Bonuses

Two weeks ago we wrote that "Executives Of Bankrupt Companies Made $131 Million In Bonuses This Year." Well, it time to add a few more million to it, courtesy of Noble Corporation's very generous shareholders.

Back on July 2, in an 8-K discussing the "Departure of Directors or Certain Officers; Election of Directors; Appointment of Certain Officers; Compensatory Arrangements of Certain Officers" Noble Corp. announced that:

According to Bloomberg, the London-based company, one of the biggest owners of offshore rigs, failed to cope with a glut of floating drilling capacity that was a decade in the making, as exploration companies shifted focus to cheaper inland shale. The plunge in crude prices made any near-term recovery in offshore drilling even less probable.

Last week, Twitter announced that after over two years of almost unchecked growth by the QAnon conspiracy theory, it was taking steps to crack down on the activity of believers, including targeted harassment and sharing of links to QAnon websites.

The effectiveness of that measure, however, is questionable. Major promoters, supposedly banned, are still rampantly posting.

QAnon, which holds that a military intelligence team is using the message board 8kun to leak clues to their upcoming (and forever delayed) purge of deep state sex traffickers, has grown explosively on Twitter since late 2017.

Twitter has outsized importance in the Q movement, as popular QAnon promoters use it to decode Q’s posts, share videos and memes, alert Q acolytes to possible deep state “comms” hidden in tweets, and attempt to win over new converts.

From March to June 2020, there were over 12 million tweets that mentioned Q or one of its associated catchphrases, according to a new report from extremism research think tank the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

Many of these tweets are also part of direct harassment swarms carried out against high-profile users who have fallen afoul of the Q movement, including Chrissy Teigen, Lady Gaga, Patton Oswalt, and Tom Hanks. And since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Twitter has seen a massive spike in QAnon disinformation and harassment, driven by the unchecked spread of coronavirus conspiracy theory videos like “Plandemic.” And just weeks earlier, Twitter was part of an explosive, QAnon-driven conspiracy theory that furniture giant Wayfair was using its website to sell missing children to traffickers.

So the site taking steps to curb the conspiracy theory’s reach was greeted as positive news by journalists and Twitter users alike, even if Q fans rolled it into their conspiracy theory that the site was hopelessly under the sway of deep state-linked celebrities.

Twitter initially announced it would suspend 7,000 Q-related accounts responsible for abuse or ban evasion, stop recommending QAnon accounts in searches, suppress QAnon-friendly hashtags in trending topics, and prevent links to QAnon sites from being shared.

A week later, Twitter has indeed taken some of these steps. Some high-profile Q accounts have been banned, and it’s no longer possible to send direct messages with links to Q sites.

Overall, mentions of QAnon and its related hashtags are down across the board.

“From July 15th to the 22nd there were one million QAnon posts from 427,000 unique authors,” extremism researcher and Ph.D. candidate Marc-André Argentino told the Daily Dot. “From the 22nd to the 28th there have been 809,000 posts, down 34 percent, from 302,000 unique authors,” a number down 14 percent from just before the ban.

Court overturns Boston Marathon bomber's death sentence

A federal appeals court Friday threw out Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s death sentence in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, saying the judge who oversaw the case did not adequately screen jurors for potential biases. A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new penalty-phase trial on whether the 27-year-old Tsarnaev should be executed for the attack that killed three people and wounded more than 260 others. “But make no mistake: Dzhokhar will spend his remaining days locked up in prison, with the only matter remaining being whether he will die by execution,” Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson wrote in the ruling, more than six months after arguments were heard in the case. An email seeking comment was sent to an attorney for Tsarnaev. A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office in Boston said they were reviewing the opinion and had no immediate comment.

Prosecutors could ask the full appeals court to hear the case or go straight to the U.S. Supreme Court. The mother of Krystle Campbell, the 29-year-old killed in the attack, expressed outrage at the court's decision. “I just don’t understand it,” Patricia Campbell told The Boston Globe. “It’s just terrible that he’s allowed to live his life. Tsarnaev's lawyers acknowledged at the beginning of his trial that he and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, set off the two bombs at the marathon finish line. But U.S. District Judge George O’Toole refused, saying he believed a fair and impartial jury could be found in the city. The 1st Circuit said the “pervasive” media coverage featuring “bone-chilling still shots and videos” of the bombing and dayslong manhunt required the judge to run a jury selection process “sufficient to identify prejudice." But O'Toole fell short, the judges found.

The judges said O'Toole deemed jurors who had already formed the opinion that Tsarnaev was guilty qualified “because they answered ‘yes’ to the question whether they could decide this high-profile case based on the evidence.” Yet he didn't sufficiently dig into what jurors had read or heard about the case, it said. But a large-scale crackdown of QAnon believers and total suppression of the conspiracy theory either hasn’t happened yet, or never was going to. Twitter never said it would entirely deplatform Q, the way Reddit did in 2018 when it banned dozens of Q subreddits. It would merely reduce the ability of users to find material related to the conspiracy and to limit its public reach.

More than that, almost all of the major banned accounts have already come back to the site with a new or alternate account and picked up right where they left off.

Within a few days of the news breaking, Twitter suspended several high-profile QAnon-promoting accounts. The first to go was “Inevitable ET,” an influential user with over a quarter of a million followers that had been banned well over a dozen times, only to create a new account each time.

A few days later, Twitter banned QAnon promoter and podcaster Tommy “Tommy G.” Gelati, after he had unleashed a swarm of harassment on Daily Beast writer Will Sommer, who had written a story about Gelati’s previous conviction for bank robbery. Then on Monday, Twitter once again suspended QAnon promoter and conspiracy theorist Joe M, who had rebuilt his following under the name @SheepKnowMore after previously being banned in April as @StormIsUponUs.

These three QAnon promoters, with well over half-a-million followers total, were notorious for spreading conspiracy theories, harassment, and disinformation, as well as for creating new accounts to get around bans. They are just the sort of accounts tailormade for Twitter to ban as part of a sweeping crackdown on a violent conspiracy theory that’s gotten out of control and made the site less safe for regular users.

But as of July 30, all three were already back on Twitter under newly created or reactivated alternate accounts: Joe M as @ToddBurgun, Tommy Gelati as @ReturnOfTheGedi and Inevitable ET as @mrbotus_520.

None of the three made any real effort to hide who they were, dropping easily deciphered clues into tweets on their new accounts or on Parler, where Q promoters tend to go to complain about their Twitter bans. They let Q fans know what new account to check out and instantly picked up tens of thousands of followers.

Together, they have racked up over 100,000 followers already, swiftly encroaching on their pre-ban reach.

Beyond allowing banned accounts to sneak back on, many other high-profile QAnon promoters are still active and prolifically spreading conspiracy theories. QAnon-driven disinformation is still going viral, including a recent video of a group of pro-hydroxychloroquine doctors that got millions of views in hours, thanks in part to being shared by Q promoters.

And Q believers are using alternate hashtags to get the word out, including #CueAnon and #17Anon, while regular favorites like #WWG1WGA are still easily searchable.

Twitter is by far the most important digital battlefield in the war that Q followers see themselves fighting against the deep state. Q believers won’t give up on Twitter and migrate to a “free speech” site like Parler for this simple reason: Twitter is too popular with “normie” and “awake” users alike to walk away from.

So unless Twitter implements a real ban, QAnon is here to stay.

Syrian Christians in Aleppo, Victims of US-EU Sanctions

St. Elijah Maronite Cathedral in Aleppo re-opened after years of disuse due to the severe destruction the 18th century cathedral endured during battles in the period of 2012 to 2016.

Aleppo had been Syria’s largest city and its commercial and industrial hub before the conflict which began in March 2011. Syria is a secular nation, with the pre-war population ratio standing at about 80% Sunni Muslim, and the remaining divided between Christians, Jews, and other Muslim sects.

It is estimated that only 30,000 Christians remain in Aleppo, compared to a pre-war population of 180,000. Aleppo is now the second largest city after the capital, Damascus.

At least three extensive missile attacks and numerous smaller attacks left the cathedral in ruins. It suffered its worst damage in when terrorists following Radical Islam, which is a political ideology, attacked the Christian areas in an attempt to eradicate all Christians and their churches.

The Syrian Arab Army liberated East Aleppo in December 2016, with at least 34,000 armed terrorists and their families removed under a negotiated settlement which the UN oversaw.

“This victory represents a strategic change and a turning point in the war against terrorism on the one hand and a crushing blow to the terrorists’ project and their supporters on the other hand,” the Syrian army statement said.

The cathedral celebrated Christmas 2016 despite the utter devastation parishioners observed. Monsignor Joseph Tobji, Maronite Archbishop of Aleppo, gave several recent interviews in which he detailed the restoration of the cathedral. He recalled his first sight of the cathedral in its gravest condition, and marveled at how the cathedral had protected the neighborhood residents, and he said, “This house (the church) played a role in receiving the blows themselves in order to protect the surrounding civilians.”

Monsignor Joseph Tobji noted the obstacle to rebuilding churches, homes and lives in Syria is not confined to lack of funding only, but also to the US-EU sanctions which prevent any foreign company from selling any product to any Syrian company, including medical needs and the supplies fight against COVID-19.

“It’s a sign of hope and rebirth, not only in a material sense but for the entire community, despite the fact that the numbers of Christians continue to dwindle, due to extreme poverty linked to the sanctions imposed on the defenseless population,” he said.

Recently, the UN Secretary General Antonio Gutierrez has publicly urged the US and EU to lift sanctions on Syria in order to fight COVID-19.

He recalled the Christmas 2016 mass, and the moment during the service when the child Jesus was placed in the manger, which had been constructed from parts of the collapsed roof. He was deeply touched emotionally at the scene, as were other attendees who were crying, laughing, clapping and cheering with joy.

The rebuilding of the cathedral’s roof, which was made of wood, required Italian architects, Italian lumber, and a roofing expert from abroad to complete. The pontifical foundation, ‘Aid to the Church in Need’ (CAN), funded the laborious project.

Daniels’ lawyer also argued that Trump’s reference to a “con job” amounted to an accusation that she was engaged in criminal activity. However, the appeals judges didn’t buy that, either, saying that the remark “could not be interpreted as anything more than a colorful expression of rhetorical hyperbole.” The appeals judges also rejected Daniels’ assertion that the tweet amounted to a denial of her underlying claim of the sexual encounter. Federal officials responding to the long-running protests in Portland are asking that a court order protecting journalists be lifted on the grounds that some of those engaged in violence are masquerading as members of the press.

Justice Department lawyers leveled the claims of misconduct by purported journalists in filings submitted Thursday to U.S. District Court Judge Michael Simon, who issued a temporary restraining order last week forbidding federal authorities from targeting the press.

“Individuals are abusing the TRO to masquerade as members of the press and evade lawful orders, or actively participating in protest activities and even illegal acts while holding themselves out to be members of the press under the protection of the TRO,” Justice Department lawyers wrote. “Even individuals who are not expressly taking advantage of the TRO are often within crowds of protesters or between officers and active protesters making it incredibly difficult and dangerous to observe the restrictions while implementing crowd control measures.”

“Savvy protesters abuse the TRO to evade lawful orders, impede law enforcement, and perpetrate crimes. The TRO has become ‘an instrument of wrong,’ and must be dissolved,” DOJ attorneys argued.

California Army National Guard Helicopters to Fly in Formation Over LA Area

Helicopters are scheduled to fly over L.A. this afternoon as part of a training exercise for the California Army National Guard.

A helicopter training exercise will be conducted Friday afternoon by pilots and aircrew members from the California Army National Guard, who will fly in formation around the Los Angeles basin.

The members of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment, will fly a dozen U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters along the coast before turning inland for a return to their home station at Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos, said Col. Richard Lalor, public affairs officer for the California Army National Guard.

The exercise is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., when the helicopters will leave the base in Los Alamitos, Lalor said.

"During the flight, aircrew members will conduct recurring training in multi-ship formation flying operations," Lalor said in a statement. "It is the culminating event of the unit's yearly summer training period."

The 1-140th AHB is a National Guard aviation unit which serves dual roles in performing missions at home and abroad, Lalor said.

In addition to deploying for combat operations overseas, the unit also deploys in support of state agencies during disaster response missions in California. Soldiers from the 1-140th also activate to drop water on wildfires, including, in recent years, both the Thomas Fire and Camp Fire. Soldiers from the unit also flew hoist rescue missions during 2018's deadly mudslide in Montecito, Lalor said.

The Army National Guard will be conducting training exercises with 10 Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters. The choppers will fly in formation along the coast.

They are being flown by the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 140th Aviation Regiment (I-140th AHB) based out of Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos.

According to Cal Guard, the 1-140th AHB conducts both domestic and international missions, along with supporting disaster response efforts, such as wildfires. The battalion was deployed to both the Thomas and Camp fires along with the Montecito mudslides.

Responding to an incident on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in which Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida verbally assaulted her — including calling her a "f—ing bitch" — Ocasio-Cortez noted that "this is not new, and that is the problem."

As I listened to her 10-minute address on the House floor, I was struck by how often it referenced Catholic values.
