Trump appointee alleges 'rampant anti-Christian sentiment' at USAID
A Trump administration appointee on Monday alleged that there is "rampant anti-Christian sentiment" at the United States Agency for International Development. Merritt Corrigan, who serves as the deputy White House liaison to the agency, which is responsible for federal foreign aid, wrote on Twitter that she plans to "expose" the bias in a Thursday press conference. Corrigan also accused New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez and New York Rep. Eliot Engel of engaging in a "corrupt campaign" to remove her from USAID. Corrigan also criticized Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker for calling for her ouster. Corrigan said that she is concerned by what she sees as funding that favors gay and transgender causes in opposition to "Christian beliefs, which are shared by the majority of Americans." "The United States is losing ground in the battle to garner influence through humanitarian aid because we now refuse to help countries who don’t celebrate sexual deviancy," Corrigan tweeted. "Meanwhile, Russia and China are happy to step in and eat our lunch."
Corrigan described how she "watched with horror" as USAID distributes material that contradicts her Christian beliefs and creates a hostile culture at that agency. She singled out the term "cis-gendered" as offensive. "I'm not cis-anything," she wrote. "I'm a woman." Engel, along with other House Democrats, in July called for Corrigan to resign from USAID, citing her history of "homophobic, misogynistic, and xenophobic" comments. Corrigan told the Washington Examiner that House Democrats have also privately put "tremendous pressure" on her and other people at the agency who share her beliefs. Corrigan worked at the Hungarian Embassy prior to her appointment to USAID, where she tweeted many of the statements for which she has been criticized. Some of these include praise for Hungarian President Viktor Orban, criticism of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren's support for gay marriage, and criticism of pro-immigration partisans. Project 1599, the group hosting Corrigan's press conference, was co-founded by lobbyist Jack Burkman and stunt activist Jacob Wohl. Corrigan's tweets came just as she was departing the agency, Politico reported.
