where a ship containing Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer exploded in Galveston with subsequent fires and other explosions.

It is very likely that fertilizer (plain old ammonium nitrate) was involved in the Beirut explosion and would account for the widespread damage.

There have been many ammonium nitrate explosions that have caused many fatalities and significant economic damage
