The Trump campaign on Tuesday blasted Joe Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, as a “phony,” while saying the choice reflects the former vice president’s “extreme agenda.”

Biden announced that Harris, D-Calif., would be his running mate in a statement Tuesday, calling her “the best person” to challenge President Trump and Vice President Pence, and “to lead this nation.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar handily prevailed in a contentious DFL primary challenge in the Fifth District on Tuesday, a race that drew in millions of dollars from across the country and cemented her upward rise in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

Omar bested four primary challengers by double-digits, including DFL newcomer and mediation lawyer Antone Melton-Meaux, whose well-funded campaign was centered on the argument that he would be more focused on the needs of the district than the outspoken incumbent.

US contractor told Lebanese port official of chemicals risk

WASHINGTON — About four years before the Beirut port explosion that killed dozens of people and injured thousands, a U.S. government contractor expressed concern to a Lebanese port official about unsafe storage there of the volatile chemicals that fueled last week’s devastating blast, American officials said Tuesday.

There is no indication the contractor communicated his concerns to anyone in the U.S. government.

His assessment was noted briefly in a four-page State Department cable first reported by The New York Times.

Memorial set in Houston for slain Fort Hood soldier

HOUSTON — A memorial for a slain Texas soldier has been scheduled more than three months after she was killed by a fellow solider at Fort Hood, an attorney for the family announced Tuesday.

The service is set for Friday at the same field on which Vanessa Guillen once played soccer as a high school athlete, Guillen family attorney Natalie Khawam said in a news release. The Catholic service will run form noon to 8 p.m. at Cesar E. Chavez High School in Houston.

Three Texas soldiers arrested in child prostitution sting near Fort Hood

AUSTIN, Texas — Three soldiers who arrived at a location Saturday with the impression that they were meeting underage girls to pay them for sex were instead arrested and charged with prostitution during a two-day sting operation by police in Killeen, Texas.

Two soldiers, Spc. Anthony Xavier Antwon, 25, and Pfc. Timmy Jones Jr., 30, received a felony charge of prostitution under the age of 18, according to a news release sent Monday by the Killeen Police Department. The third, Staff Sgt. Pierre Jean, 32, received a Class A misdemeanor charge for prostitution.

A Russian storage tank holding thousands of tons of diesel oil collapsed due to the melting of the permafrost on which it stood.

The oil, which spilled into the Ambarnaya River and the surrounding area was from a thermal power plant that is a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, the largest producer of nickel and palladium in the world.

The oil made its way to Lake Pyasino and could possibly pollute the Pyasina river and eventually flow into the Arctic Ocean.
