There was a game called urban terror a few years ago where you could literally throw a grenade and shoot it into the enemy flag area.

yep.. One teamie would throw the hand grenade up, and the other would shoot it with the grenade launcher.
Becauase the grenade launcher was a projectile with a model following the trave.
The rifles in the game were trace-based hit detection only, no model.
That's why it worked
