The biggest issue is volume. First of all, the post office isn't set up to handle a sudden volume of 200+ million pieces of mail on top of the usual seasonal (Christmas) mail. THIS opens the door to a LOT of avenues for fraud. The use of color coding is just one of the most blatant forms. There is NO MECHANISM whereby the voter can ascertain if the vote was counted or not. None. So there is no guarantee that the vote was ever recorded. With in-person voting there is usually some sort of feedback that tells the voter that the machine at least noted the choices correctly.
