President Xi Launches Historic Purge Against China's 'Deep State'

Just days after Communist Party officials censored a prominent academic who dared to criticize the CCP and its glorious leader, Xi Jinping, more news of what appears to be a mounting purge of dissent in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, as Beijing prepares a Russia-style vaccine rollout.

WSJ reports that one of Xi's most senior allies has called for a Maoist purge of China’s domestic-security apparatus, insisting last month that it is time to “turn the blade inwards and scrape the poison off the bone.”

Within one week of the call, party "enforcers" launched investigations into at least 21 police and judicial officials. Dozens more have been taken down in the weeks since. So far, the most high-profile figure to face charges is the police chief of Shanghai.

In essence, President Xi, who won plaudits for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic but is nevertheless weakened due to China's weakened economy and rising tensions with Washington, is launching his own assault on the deep state, mirroring President Trump's animosity and distrust toward his own intelligence machine.

“Xi is especially reliant on this coercive state apparatus, yet also distrustful of it,” Wu told the Wall Street Journal.

Dems Officially Nominate Biden for President at Convention

Former US Vice President Joe Biden officially won the Democratic Party's presidential nomination after a virtual roll call vote at the party's national convention, during which a lineup of speakers hammered President Donald Trump on leadership.

Biden secured 3,558 delegates after the roll call vote on Tuesday, which took place at a largely virtual convention, which was nominally held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Candidates needed 1,991 delegates to win the presidential nominee for their party, a threshold Biden reached earlier on after Senator Bernie Sanders dropped out.

The second night of the four-day virtual Democratic National Convention was themed on leadership, especially on a global scale, and Democrats took the opportunity to criticize Trump's foreign policy.

Former Secretary of State John Kerry in his remarks said Trump is incapable of defending the country in contrast to Biden's "steady" hand.

Kerry said Joe Biden can make "America lead like America again." "This moment is a fight for the security of America and the world," the Obama administration's top diplomat added.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who served under the George W. Bush administration, also made a case for supporting Biden. Powell said Biden will stand up to adversaries and trust US diplomats and the intelligence community.

US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the United States needs a "steady" US president to pull the country out of its crisis.

“Our country needs a commander in chief who takes care of our troops, in the same way he would his own family,” Powell said during his short speech. “For Joe Biden, that doesn’t need teaching. It comes from the experience he shares with millions of military families, sending his beloved son off to war and praying to God he would come home safe.”

US states seek BILLIONS from drug ‘KINGPIN’ Johnson & Johnson and its distributors for causing opioid crisis

About a dozen US attorneys general are seeking a combined $26.4 billion from three major drug distributors and drug maker Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to settle opioid litigation against the firms, the Wall Street Journal reported.

According to its sources, the states want a collective $21.14 billion from the distributors, which include McKesson, AmerisourceBergen, and Cardinal Health, and $5.28 billion from J&J.

New York state is seeking to claim $165 billion, sources said, noting that an official acknowledged that the states are not likely to actually recoup that figure. A closely watched opioid trial pitting New York state against McKesson, Johnson & Johnson, and others was postponed in March due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The central claim in the lawsuits is that drug makers overstated the benefits of opioids while downplaying the risks, while distributors allegedly failed to flag and halt a rising tide of suspicious orders.

The companies deny allegations that they are responsible for fueling the public health crisis. They have attempted to pin the blame on doctors for over-prescribing drugs and claim they complied with all state and federal laws.

Meanwhile, according to an HHS report, some 10.3 million Americans aged 12 and over misused opioids in 2018. The number includes 9.9 million prescription pain relief abusers and 808,000 heroin users.

In a landmark opioid case that went to trial, an Oklahoma judge last August ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $572 million for its “kingpin” role in causing the opioid crisis by pushing pain pills and lying about their safety. “Johnson & Johnson, motivated by greed and avarice, is responsible for the opioid epidemic in our state,” Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter then said. The sum was reduced to $465 million in November.

While choosing to sue drug makers instead of distributors, Oklahoma has also filed suit against Purdue Pharma, which invented OxyContin in 1996. Litigation had led the company to file for bankruptcy in September 2019.

COVID vaccine likely to be mandatory in Australia, Scott Morrison says after signing deal with Oxford University

Australians are likely to face mandatory coronavirus vaccinations if Prime Minister Scott Morrison gets his wish.

The nation is a step closer to gaining access to a vaccine, with the Federal Government securing an international deal to produce a vaccine frontrunner locally if trials succeed.

If that happens, Mr Morrison said Australia would have a target of 95 per cent vaccination, which would account for people with health conditions that prevented them being vaccinated.

"I would expect it to be as mandatory as you could possibly make it," he told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

"There are always exemptions for any vaccine on medical grounds, but that should be the only basis.

"We are talking about a pandemic that has destroyed the global economy and taken the lives of hundreds of thousands all around the world, and over 430 Australians here."

The Government has signed an agreement with UK-based drug company AstraZeneca to secure the potential COVID-19 vaccine, being developed by Oxford University.

If the vaccine clears trials, the Federal Government would manufacture it and make it free for all Australians.

But that's unlikely to be until next year at the earliest, Mr Morrison said.

Acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said he expected strong voluntary take-up of any vaccine that was approved for use.

"Of course, the first will be a voluntary call for people and I'm sure there will be long queues — socially distanced, of course — for this vaccine," he said.

"There will be very strong campaigns to encourage people and we've had experience before of linking vaccination with other programs, and all of those things will be looked at over time."

Hours before his address on Tuesday, for example, the Daily Mail published photos of the former president getting massaged by one of Jeffrey Epstein's young victims. Clinton reportedly needed to work out a "kink" while the billionaire pedophile's private plane, aka "The Lolita Express," was refueling in Portugal. He also fooled around with White House interns and has been credibly accused of rape.
