A special prosecutor in Chicago has concluded his investigation into the handling of the hate-crime allegations by actor Jussie Smollett, determining there were a series of "operational failures" and several misleading and false statements made by Cook County State Attorney Kim Foxx following the actor's allegations. Special Prosecutor Dan Webb said Monday that he did not find evidence of undue influence exerted by third parties, but determine that Foxx and her team made a number of false or misleading statements to the media about her declared recusal from the case, her uncertainty that Smollett would be convicted, and her ongoing contact with Smollett's sister, actress Jurnee Smollett.

In January of 2019, Smollett told police that he had been attacked by two white men near his home in Chicago. The actor was then accused of staging the attack and charged with a 16-count indictment in March of 2019. Foxx's office tossed out the indictments weeks later, raising suspicions about the handling of the case. Following the decision to drop the charges against Smollett, Foxx's office used a list of nearly 6,000 cases to prove that the actor was treated no differently than any other case similar to his. Webb's report determined that providing the case list was an abuse of discretion and that despite Foxx's statements to the contrary, his case was not handled in the same way as others like it. Foxx initially said that the case was "treated like the other cases that have gone through our alternative prosecution model.” Webb determined that statement to be untrue, considering Smollett has a criminal history in California and "there were not thousands of (or, arguably any) similar cases that the Foxx's office resolved in a similar way to the initial case.

Mark Geragos, an attorney for Jussie Smollet, made a statement on Monday calling the report politically motivated and claiming that his client, "a black, gay man … maintains his innocence" and "continues to be used as a pawn." Geragos also claimed that Webb's report was "a blatant attempt to take down a black, progressive, female prosecutor who does not fit within the white power structure." Webb filed a new six-count indictment against Smollett in February, and was tasked with investigating any wrongdoing in the initial handling of the case. Webb now says he is seeking permission from a Cook County judge to release the 60-page evidentiary report that supports his findings. He also intends to send the report to the Illinois' Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, meaning Foxx and her colleagues could be penalized for their actions. Webb's report found that attorneys in Foxx's office were "surprised" and "shocked" by how the initial charges against Smollett were handled, and that those in charge of the case at the outset tell inconsistent stories about how decisions were made. A statement made on Foxx's behalf of Monday read, "This report puts to rest any implications of outside influence or criminal activity on the part of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office (CCSAO) and the Chicago Police Department (CPD). As the report unequivocally confirms, State’s Attorney Foxx was not involved in the decision-making process regarding the Jussie Smollett case at any point and there was no outside influence on that process."

SYDNEY: Australia should make any coronavirus vaccine compulsory for its 25 million citizens bar medical exemptions, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday (Aug 19), wading into a heated ethical debate.

About a dozen US attorneys general are seeking a combined $26.4 billion from three major drug distributors and drug maker Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to settle opioid litigation against the firms, the Wall Street Journal reported.

COVID vaccine likely to be mandatory in Australia, Scott Morrison says after signing deal with Oxford University

Australians are likely to face mandatory coronavirus vaccinations if Prime Minister Scott Morrison gets his wish.

The nation is a step closer to gaining access to a vaccine, with the Federal Government securing an international deal to produce a vaccine frontrunner locally if trials succeed.

If that happens, Mr Morrison said Australia would have a target of 95 per cent vaccination, which would account for people with health conditions that prevented them being vaccinated.

"I would expect it to be as mandatory as you could possibly make it," he told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

"There are always exemptions for any vaccine on medical grounds, but that should be the only basis.

"We are talking about a pandemic that has destroyed the global economy and taken the lives of hundreds of thousands all around the world, and over 430 Australians here."

The Government has signed an agreement with UK-based drug company AstraZeneca to secure the potential COVID-19 vaccine, being developed by Oxford University.

If the vaccine clears trials, the Federal Government would manufacture it and make it free for all Australians.

But that's unlikely to be until next year at the earliest, Mr Morrison said.

Acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly said he expected strong voluntary take-up of any vaccine that was approved for use.

"Of course, the first will be a voluntary call for people and I'm sure there will be long queues — socially distanced, of course — for this vaccine," he said.

"There will be very strong campaigns to encourage people and we've had experience before of linking vaccination with other programs, and all of those things will be looked at over time."

Question: "What did Jesus mean when He spoke of living water?"

Answer: Jesus uses the phrase “living water” in two instances in the Bible. The first instance is found in John chapter 4. Jesus was tired and sat at a well while His disciples went into town to buy food. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus asked her for a drink. The Samaritan woman was quite shocked because Jesus was a Jew, and Jews simply hated the Samaritans. Of course, she had no idea who Jesus was and asked Him how He could ask her for water since He was a Jew.

Jesus ignored the question and went right to the point, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water” (John 4:10). Notice that He does not say that He is the living water, but that He would give living water to her, and when she received it, she would never thirst again. Of course, that does not tell us what the living water is! For that, we must go to another passage of Scripture. In this case, Jesus is in the temple surrounded by a throng of worshipers. He suddenly cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scriptures said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” (John 7:37–39, emphasis added).

Here Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the living water. External influence of the Spirit had always been given in the conversion and sanctification of the Old Testament saints and prophets, but the gift of the Spirit who would indwell believers had not yet been received (Acts 10:44–45). So, though many people say that Jesus is the living water, Jesus Himself intended the phrase to mean the Holy Spirit who dwells in believers and seals them for salvation (Ephesians 1:13–14). It is the ministry of the Spirit, flowing out of a heart redeemed by God, that blesses believers and, through them, brings life and light to the world.
