wall street used to malign penny stock brokers for "blind pools." now they love them some.
"Perhaps the proliferation of so-called special purpose acquisition vehicles stands as the avatar of the current market zeitgeist. So far this year, 78 SPACs have raised a combined total of almost $31 billion in the U.S. according to Bloomberg, already setting a full-year record with four months remaining in 2020.
Yesterday, former Goldman Sachs president and Trump administration advisor Gary Cohn threw his hat in the ring, filing paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission alongside former KKR executive Clifton Robbins on a “blank check” SPAC with a planned fundraising target of $600 million, double the target size of Robbins’ initial planned SPAC according to a draft filing from July.
The undertaking may prove to be of great advantage, but would be investors will have to take management’s word for it for now. “Our founders have expertise and experience investing across virtually all industries and sectors and we may pursue an acquisition in any business industry,” the filing notes.
Cohn is not the only bold-faced political name to get into the SPAC game. On Monday, a SPAC called The Executive Network Partnering Corp. filed a form S-1 with the SEC, offering $300 million in shares in order to “pursue a partnering transaction with any company in any industry.” It will be a Republican family affair, as former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will serve as chairman while Solamere Capital, the private equity firm founded by Utah Sen. Mitt Romney’s son Taggart, will be the main sponsor.
While the politically connected pair of SPACs look to keep their options open, an experienced player maintains a more topical focus. Bloomberg reported yesterday that private equity giant TPG, which boasted “a lengthy track record for SPACs before this year’s boom,” is preparing to raise some $700 million via a pair of blind pools. The vehicles will attempt to capitalize on a pair of popular investment themes, with one focused on the technology sector and the other within the realm of environmental, social and governance industry."
