The mystery of the Murray-Darling’s vanishing flows

It might be the biggest whodunnit — or what-dunnit — in Australia.

More than 2 trillion litres of water — enough to fill Sydney Harbour four and a half times — has gone missing from our largest and most precious river system — the Murray-Darling Basin.

And it’s happened in what was already one of the driest periods the basin has seen.

According to an investigation by some of Australia’s top water scientists, shared exclusively with the ABC, 20 per cent of the water expected to flow down the rivers from 2012-2019 was simply not there. That’s despite almost $7 billion being spent to protect the health of the system’s rivers and ecosystems that rely on them.

Was it stolen? Was it lost? Has climate change made it go up in steam? Or was it simply never there in the first place?

There are clues scattered up and down the rivers but one simple message is clear in the scientists’ findings. For the first time, they provide evidence that the Murray-Darling Basin Plan — the most expensive environmental program in Australia’s history — is delivering much less water than was expected.

And the implications could be huge.

It covers a seventh of the continent, is home to nearly 10 per cent of Australia's people, and produces a third of our food.

This enormous network of rivers, creeks, wetlands and valleys is what's known as the Murray-Darling Basin.

To save the struggling river system, by 2019, federal and state governments had spent $6.7 billion, recovering 2.1 trillion litres of water to put back into the rivers.

Dr. Epstein is a psychologist, professor, author, and journalist who earned his Ph.D. in psychology at Harvard University in 1981. He testified at the U.S. Congress about his research last year.

“The message I’m trying to get out there has nothing to do with my political views,” Dr. Epstein told me today. “We need to set our politics aside and try to understand what's happening with the tech companies and especially the way they’re affecting democracy.”

I was blown away by the research Dr. Epstein has conducted. He’s done a number of studies that definitively show that Google is manipulating search engine results. I asked him why, given his liberal political views, he isn’t happy about what’s going on.

“These companies are using this power strategically and deliberately and on a very large scale,” he responded. “I don’t care who these companies are favoring right now. The fact is, they shouldn’t have this kind of power…whoever they’re favoring today might not be who they’re favoring tomorrow.”

He also said Google and other companies like it are unaccountable to anyone and that that’s a serious threat for democracy.

“These are these are big issues involving surveillance, involving censorship, involving free speech, human autonomy. They’re much bigger issues than, you know, who’s going to win the next senatorial race or presidency…this year is a watershed year…this is the year where we either wake up and and try to fight these companies or we will be turning over democracy to these companies.”

These companies have to ability shift opinions, attitudes, beliefs, purchases, and even voting, he continued. They’ve become the “technological elites” President Eisenhower warned about in his famous 1961 speech on the military-industrial complex.

Dr. Epstein also stated that its not just Google’s search engine that’s problematic, but the massive amount of surveillance and censorship the company engages in as well.

“Google deliberately gives all of their their premium services free of charge to educational institutions around the world. Elementary schools, high schools, colleges, top universities use Google. And all of that information is being recorded and analyzed,” he said.

During President Obama’s second term, six federal agencies were run by former Google executives, he added. Under Trump, all of those people have been kicked out, and the lawsuits have started again. Dr. Epstein said that if Joe Biden gets elected in 2020, those lawsuits will be dropped.

Dr. Epstein also explained to me that Google stores and analyzes not only every search you’ve conducted, but also every email you’ve ever drafted, sent, and even deleted! Android phones spy on you when you’re not even using them, he said.

“You have to get away from Google. That's the first thing…you must not use Gmail…you’ve got to dump Chrome, Google’s browser. You've gotta dump Android, which is Google’s operating system.”

At the beginning of this medical psy-op, Dr. Anthony Fauci told the world that millions would die in the US of COVID-19, which of course didn't happen. Yet, the media worldwide is still reacting like it did.

Over and over again we are told by the CDC and WHO via the controlled media, "More cases are being reported", "Cases are on the rise" and "There's been a surge in cases". The non-stop repeating of these phrases is a form of brainwashing. It is meant to put us in a state of fear and panic where we no longer have the ability to think for ourselves. We become helpless obedient sheep.

We are meant to believe that all cases represent very sick contagious people that are in our community, that can infect us and/or our loved ones. This is not a reality. While someone may be genuinely sick from this virus. Most people didn't even know they had the virus, many had mild symptoms, and near 80% of deaths were elderly people with pre-existing conditions. The recovery rate is over 99%. It was recently announced by the CDC that 6% of the 153,504 deaths recorded actually died from COVID-19, that's 9,210 deaths, the other 94% had 2-3 serious health conditions with advanced age.

Keep in mind that the virus peaked (in deaths) in April and morphed several times since, with a death rate on par with a regular flu season. This is why we hear mainly of cases today (August 31st) and not many deaths.

WHAT DO "CASES" REALLY MEAN?

Let's look at testing. The inventor of the RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel or PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test was a scientist named Kary Mullis. He said the PCR should never be used as a tool in "the diagnosis of infectious diseases."

Why is that?

The process is very complicated but simply stated, the PCR test does not look for the virus and is non-binary, meaning it actually doesn't determine a false or positive reading. It looks for tiny strands of foreign non-human DNA, which are then compared with various partial viral DNA, these tiny strands are then cycled or amplified several times, creating possibly a billion or more copies of the original sample. The problem is, the more you cycle, the more you have false positives.

The PCR test cannot determine viral load, so you may have a tiny strand of non-active viral material in you, and depending on the amount of cycling, you could test positive. That's a problem.

It should be noted that SARS-CoV-2 that causes COVID-19 has never been isolated 100% thus no gold standard or passing Koch's postulates - a series of 4 conditions that must be met to establish an infectious agent as the cause of a particular disease or condition. So what does the PCR test look for, if we don't know exactly what we are looking at?

Britain is not entering a second wave of coronavirus infections and the young, mildly-affected people being diagnosed in rising case numbers are not likely to trigger a rise in hospitalisations, experts say.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday warned that the UK 'must do everything in our power' to stop a second surge of people going into hospital with the coronavirus, which he said was starting to happen in Europe.

But experts told MailOnline Mr Hancock's comments were 'alarmist' and that there is currently 'no sign' of a second wave coming over the horizon. The data shows hospital cases are also not rising by much in Europe, contrary to the Health Secretary's claim.

As of yesterday there were only 764 people in hospital with Covid-19 in the UK, just 60 of whom are in intensive care. This is a sharp drop from a peak of 19,872 hospitalised patients on April 12.

The falling number of hospital cases comes despite infections having been on the rise since lockdown restrictions were lifted at the start of July. Experts say this is because the groups getting infected and diagnosed now are completely different to those at the start of the pandemic.

Scientists say it is younger people driving up infections and they are less likely to get seriously ill and end up in hospital. For that reason, hospital cases and deaths will not necessarily follow higher cases, and there may not be a deadly wave like the first.

Another 1,295 people were diagnosed with the virus in Britain yesterday, following 1,406 the day before, and the seven-day average number of daily cases is now 1,339 – a 27 per cent increase on last Tuesday and the highest since June 11.

Professor Carl Heneghan, a medicine expert at the University of Oxford, said: 'There is currently no second wave. What we are seeing is a sharp rise in the number of healthy people who are carrying the virus, but exhibiting no symptoms. Almost all of them are young. They are being spotted because – finally – a comprehensive system of national test and trace is in place.'

Only One in Ten Medical Treatments are Backed by High-quality Evidence — University of Oxford

When you visit your doctor, you might assume that the treatment they prescribe has solid evidence to back it up. But you’d be wrong. Only one in ten medical treatments are supported by high-quality evidence, our latest research shows.

The analysis, which is published in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, included 154 Cochrane systematic reviews published between 2015 and 2019. Only 15 (9.9%) had high-quality evidence according to the gold-standard method for determining whether they provide high or low-quality evidence, called GRADE (grading of recommendations, assessment, development and evaluation). Among these, only two had statistically significant results – meaning that the results were unlikely to have arisen due to random error – and were believed by the review authors to be useful in clinical practice. Using the same system, 37% had moderate, 31% had low, and 22% had very low-quality evidence.

The GRADE system looks at things like risk of bias. For example, studies that are “blinded” – in which patients don’t know whether they are getting the actual treatment or a placebo – offer higher-quality evidence than “unblinded” studies. Blinding is important because people who know what treatment they are getting can experience greater placebo effects than those who do not know what treatment they are getting.

Among other things, GRADE also considers whether the studies were imprecise because of differences in the way the treatment was used. In the 2016 review, researchers found that 13.5% – about one in seven – reported that treatments were supported by high-quality evidence. Lack of high-quality evidence, according to GRADE, means that future studies might overturn the results.

The 154 studies were chosen because they were updates of a previous review of 608 systematic reviews, conducted in 2016. This allows us to check whether reviews that had been updated with new evidence had higher-quality evidence. They didn’t. In the 2016 study, 13.5% reported that treatments were supported by high-quality evidence, so there was a trend towards lower quality as more evidence was gathered.

There were a few limitations to the study. First, the sample size in the study may not have been representative, and other studies have found that over 40% of medical treatments are likely to be effective. Also, the sample in the study was not large enough to check whether there were certain types of medical treatments (pharmacological, surgical, psychological) that were better than others. It is also possible that the “gold standard” for ranking evidence (GRADE) is too strict.

81 Nobel laureates - scientists who should, in theory, be apolitical - have endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in his bid for the White House, according to The Hill.

In an open letter released on Wednesday, the scientists praised the former Vice President for his "willingness to listen to experts," after Biden said he would 'shut down the US' if scientists told him to.

The signatories represent the largest group of Nobel laureates to endorse a candidate for office, according to the Biden campaign.

"At no time in our nation's history has there been a greater need for our leaders to appreciate the value of science in formulating public policy," their letter reads.

"During his long record of public service, Joe Biden has consistently demonstrated his willingness to listen to experts, his understanding of the value of international collaboration in research and his respect for the contribution that immigrants make to the intellectual life of our country," they added. -The Hill

The letter is reminiscent of the 70 Nobel laureates who endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016, while 76 endorsed Barack Obama in 2008.

Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL) - which The Hill notes is the only physicist in Congress, organized the Nobel winners for Biden's endorsement, according to CNN.

Perhaps it's worth noting that Pew found in 2009 that at least 81% of scientists are Democrat or lean left.

TEXAS — On August 24th, around midnight, Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the apartment complex located at 15035 Westpark in reference to an unresponsive 9 month old infant.

Upon their arrival, they located 9 month old Savayah Mason, who was being treated by EMS personnel.

She was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased.

HCSO Homicide investigators responded to the scene and began an investigation into the child’s death. An autopsy conducted at the Harris County Institute of Forensics indicated the child had been sexually assaulted and died due to asphyxiation during the assault.

Investigators interviewed the father of the child, Luis Luna,

23, and determined he was responsible for the child’s death.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted charges of Capital Murder against Luna for the death of his daughter. On August 31st, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, along with several assisting agencies, arrested Luis Luna without incident.

TSA tries out another (illegal) biometric “ID verification” system

Today the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that it has launched a “pilot” at Washington National Airport (DCA) of yet another scheme for biometric identification and tracking of domestic air travelers.

The new “touchless ID verification” stations at DCA include a webcam (at top center of photo above) a magnetic-stripe reader (lower left) for drivers licenses and other ID cards, and a photographic scanner for passports (lower right).

Travelers who volunteer to use the new system are directed to insert their drivers license, ID card, or passport into the appropriate reader, stand on a marked spot in front of the webcam, and remove their face mask, so that the image from the ID (or, more likely, from some back-end image database linked to the ID, although that hasn’t been disclosed) and the image from the webcam can be compared by some undisclosed algorithm.

As we’ve noted previously, it appears to us that (1) the TSA has no general authority to require travelers to show their faces or remove face masks, and (2) in many jurisdictions, orders issued by state or local health authorities currently require all people in public places such as airports to wear masks.

The TSA describes this system as “touchless”. But while TSA staff don’t have to touch travelers’ IDs, each traveler has to touch the same ID card or passport scanner. Then, immediately after touching the scanner, they have to touch their face again to put their mask back on.

The TSA press release (reproduced in full below, since it doesn’t seem to be available on the TSA’s website) doesn’t say how long this “pilot” will last. In practice, expansions of TSA tracking of travelers have typically been rolled out incrementally, initially announced with reassuring statements that “this is only a test” and is “voluntary”, but then continued indefinitely and made compulsory as a condition of passage through TSA checkpoints.

The TSA signs at the new ID verification stations says that mug shots are voluntary, but that “You must still insert or scan your identity document in the device, even if you do not have your photo taken.” No legal basis for this purported requirement is specified:

Wall Street’s Felon Banks to Go Live with their Own Stock Exchange this Month

Members Exchange (MEMX), a brand new stock exchange, has announced that it will begin live trading of select stocks for the first time on September 21 with a full phase-in on September 29.

Criminal histories are, apparently, no barrier to running a stock exchange in the United States to the deeply conflicted way of thinking of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which issued its approval to operate the exchange on May 5.

Investors in the new stock exchange are some of the most serially-charged Wall Street banks, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and UBS, along with the hedge fund, Citadel Securities. BlackRock, which is up to its neck in the Federal Reserve’s deeply conflicted bailout programs, is also an investor, as is the high-frequency trading firm, Virtu Financial, and others.

JPMorgan Chase has been criminally investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice at least four times in the past seven years. A criminal probe in 2013 looked at how the bank had used bank depositors’ savings to gamble in exotic derivatives in London, eventually losing $6.2 billion. That case was known as the London Whale and ended in the bank paying $900 million in fines. No criminal charges were brought against the bank.

In 2014, JPMorgan Chase was charged with two criminal felony counts for how it mishandled the business account of Ponzi mastermind, Bernie Madoff. JPMorgan’s compliance staff looked the other way at screaming red flags of money laundering in the Madoff account for decades. Bank employees told authorities in the U.K. that it thought Madoff might be running a Ponzi scheme. It filed no such concerns with U.S. regulators. The bank pleaded guilty to both felony counts.

In 2015, the Justice Department brought another criminal felony count against the bank, this time for engaging with other banks in rigging foreign exchange markets. The bank again pleaded guilty. In both the 2014 and 2015 cases, JPMorgan Chase was given a deferred prosecution agreement by the Justice Department.

On September 16 of last year, the Justice Department indicted two current and one former precious metal traders at JPMorgan Chase on criminal RICO charges, a charge typically leveled at organized crime members. The traders were charged with running a racketeering enterprise out of the precious metals trading desk at JPMorgan Chase. The bank has indicated in an SEC filing that the bank itself remains under a criminal probe in the matter.

In July of this year, Goldman Sachs settled a criminal indictment against it in Malaysia for $3.9 billion over its involvement in a bribery and kickback scandal known as 1MDB. According to a Bloomberg report in December, the U.S. Department of Justice also has an ongoing criminal investigation of the firm related to the same matter.

According to the 10-K (Annual Report) that Goldman filed with the SEC on February 21, it is cooperating with the Department of Justice in the 1MDB case but the resolution “could result in the imposition of significant fines, penalties and other sanctions against the firm, including restrictions on the firm’s activities.” Let’s hope that not being allowed to own a stock exchange is one of those restrictions…
