Wilmot Reed Hastings Jr. (born October 8, 1960) is an American businessman. He is the co-founder, chairman, and co-chief executive officer (CEO) of Netflix, and sits on a number of boards and non-profit organizations.
A former member of the California State Board of Education, Hastings is an advocate for education reform through charter schools.
Hastings was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Joan Amory (Loomis) and Wilmot Reed Hastings. His maternal great-grandfather was attorney, financier, scientist, inventor, and executive producer Alfred Lee Loomis.
He attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He entered Marine Corps officer training through their Platoon Leader Class, and spent the summer of 1981 in Officer Candidate School at Marine Corps Base Quantico.
He did not complete the training and never commissioned into the Marine Corps—choosing instead to pursue service in the Peace Corps.
Hastings' first job was at Adaptive Technology, where he created a tool for debugging software.[10] He met Audrey MacLean in 1990 when she was CEO at Adaptive Corp.
Hastings left Adaptive Technology in 1991 to found his first company, Pure Software, which produced products to troubleshoot software.
His engineering background didn't prepare him for the challenges of being a CEO and he asked his board to replace him, stating he was losing confidence.[11] The board refused, and Hastings says he learned to be a businessman.
Pure Software was taken public by Morgan Stanley in 1995. In 1996, Pure Software announced a merger with Atria Software. The merger integrated Pure Software's programs for detecting bugs in software with Atria's tools to manage development of complex software.
In 1997, the combined company, Pure Atria, was acquired by Rational Software, which triggered a 42% drop in both companies' stocks after the deal was announced.
In 1997, Hastings and former Pure Software employee Marc Randolph co-founded Netflix, offering flat rate movie rental-by-mail to customers in the US by combining two emerging technologies; DVDs, which were much easier to send as mail than VHS-cassettes, and an online website to order them from, instead of a paper catalogue.

Alfred Lee Loomis-Reed Hastings maternal great-grandfather
Alfred Lee Loomis (November 4, 1887 – August 11, 1975) was an American attorney, investment banker, philanthropist, scientist, physicist, inventor of the LORAN Long Range Navigation System, and a lifelong patron of scientific research.
He established the Loomis Laboratory in Tuxedo Park, New York, and his role in the development of radar and the atomic bomb contributed to the Allied victory in World War II.
He invented the Aberdeen Chronograph for measuring muzzle velocities, contributed significantly (perhaps critically, according to Luis Alvarez) to the development of a ground-controlled approach technology for aircraft, and participated in preliminary meetings of the Manhattan Project.
Loomis also made contributions to biological instrumentation. Working with Edmund Newton Harvey he co-invented the microscope centrifuge, and pioneered techniques for electroencephalography.
In 1937, he discovered the sleep K-complex brainwave. During the Great Depression, Loomis anonymously paid the Physical Review journal's fees for authors who could not afford them.
Born in Manhattan, Loomis was the son of Julia Josephine Stimson and Henry Patterson Loomis, and grandson of Alfred Lebbeus Loomis. There were prominent members of society on both sides of his family; primarily they were physicians.
Alfred's parents separated when he was very young, and his father died when Alfred was in college. His first cousin was Henry Stimson, who held cabinet-level positions in the administrations of William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman.
From the boy's early years, Stimson exerted considerable influence on Loomis.
