Claver-Carone, Trump’s senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council, won the election Saturday during an electronic meeting with votes from at least 15 of the 28 regional member nations, the IADB said in an emailed statement, without mentioning the final count. He is poised to begin a five-year term in October, becoming the first American to lead the Washington-based institution. The victory came after Argentina abstained in protest and urged other nations to join it.

 

While Mexico, Chile and the European Union also previously urged a delay, saying that countries lacked appropriate time to debate the bank’s future due to the pandemic, the subtext was the uproar over Trump nominating an adviser known as a Cuba and Venezuela hard-liner and breaking the tradition of the bank’s head coming from Latin America established over the course of its six-decade history.

 

Former presidents and finance ministers from nations including Mexico, Brazil and Colombia argued that having a head from the U.S., which has triple the voting power of any other nation, would strip the region of its influence in the bank’s decisions. To ease that concern, Claver-Carone said last month that he’s held talks with the Brazilians about the IDB’s No. 2 position and pledged to appoint leaders from the Caribbean and Central America.

 

The bank lends more than $10 billion per year to fund social and infrastructure programs and is seen as key to finance Latin America’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

Q, this place just moved into a building in Humboldt, AZ that by all rights should be condemned. It has no windows in the second floor, they are all covered with plywood. It started out as a dance hall, there were a bunch of little girls there yesterday. The guy who runs it lives in a bus behind the property. He is from Yakima Washington. He just got elected to the town council. This building can't possibly be considered a safe place for young children with all the windows boarded shut.

Greek police fire tear gas at migrants protesting after blaze at Europe’s largest refugee center

 

Clashes erupted and police fired tear gas as a large crowd of migrants protested on the Greek island of Lesbos after Moria refugee center, the largest in Europe, burnt down earlier this week.

 

The blaze at the severely overcrowded camp, which was initially designed to accommodate about 2,200, left more than 12,000 people, mainly Africans and Afghans, without shelter. Greek authorities have already started erecting a new tent settlement for them, but the migrants are demanding to be allowed to leave the island.

 

Hundreds of people marched across Lesbos on Saturday, chanting β€œFreedom” and β€œNo camp.” Some of them carried signs which read, β€œWe don’t want to go to a hell like Moria again” and β€œCan you hear us Mrs Merkel?,” appealing to the German chancellor to take them in.

 

Things got heated after the protesters tried to make their way down a road leading to the island’s port of Mytilene, which was blocked by the police. There were brief clashes, with law enforcement deploying teargas to make the migrants disperse.

β€œI’m Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and I’m proud to represent New York in the United States Senate.

 

Nineteen years ago, a sunny September morning turned to horror – and our state, and our country, were forever changed.

 

September 11th was a terrifying day. We lost nearly 3,000 men, women, and children. They were our parents and siblings, our sons and daughters, our friends and our neighbors.

 

Today, I join you in honoring those who we lost, but will never forget. That day, we experienced the darkest of moments, but we also witnessed the best of America.

 

We saw it in the first responders speeding towards lower Manhattan, running up towers, while everyone else was running down. In the construction workers who rushed to help. They need resources to fight this pandemic. They need real relief from this economic crisis. And they need it now.

 

The Senate must pass a comprehensive Coronavirus relief bill that meets the needs of the American people. Not a paltry, piecemeal approach that leaves out millions.

 

My proudest moment in the Senate was when we finally passed a bipartisan bill to provide our brave 9/11 first responders with health care for the rest of their lives. But it took years to get them the help that they deserved.

 

We cannot let history repeat itself now. Our doctors, nurses, grocery store clerks, postal workers show us every day how to be strong and courageous: they show up, care for their neighbors, and help in every way they can.

Exhibit A is this year’s Jury Prize winner, MaΓ―mouna DoucourΓ©, who came from faraway Paris to Los Angeles for the first time in her life to participate in the festival.

 

She came all that way by herself, but laughed it off at the opening night dinner at my home: β€œWhy not?” she said, as she walked into the backyard from the airport with an optimistic grin. Yeah, I thought β€” why not?

 

The next day DoucourΓ©, whose parents are from Senegal, beat out 11 other award-winning finalists for the Jury Prize with β€œMaman(s),” which tells the story of a little girl who endures the arrival of a second β€œmother” in the family, or rather the woman-plus-baby her father brings home after a trip to Senegal and whom the family is forced to accept.

 

The story comes loosely from the life of DoucourΓ©, who grew up with two mothers in a Parisian immigrant community where that was far from uncommon.

 

β€œI really wanted to show the suffering of women and particularly of children because, for me, we often forget to think about them and speak to them,” DoucourΓ© told TheWrap in an interview about the film.

 

That DoucourΓ© chose to tell this private story is remarkable, but more remarkable is the sensitivity and skill with which she tells it, and which the jury could not miss.

 

Eight-year-old Aida (Sokhna Diallo) is seen up close, shot by DoucourΓ© with an unmistakable compassion. One scene has the point of view of the little girl as she hides beneath her parents’ bed and they fight above her. The mother sits on the bed and sobs, but all the viewer sees is her ankles. In a climactic scene of anguish, Aida takes the new baby and throws him in the public trash bin, the camera bouncing indignantly behind her angry pigtail.

 

Where did DoucourΓ© learn to make movies with such intensity? β€œI’m self-taught,” she told me at the closing party, after the awards were announced. But does photography or writing run in her family? She laughed that same optimistic laugh. β€œNo,” she said. β€œMy father is a street sweeper, my mother works in a shop.”

 

When she first told her mother that she wanted to make movies, she said that her mother, who wears the veil of a devout Muslim, told her to leave it alone.

 

β€œThat’s not for us,” she said, β€œus,” meaning: women. Africans. Immigrants.

 

DoucourΓ© said she redoubled her commitment to filmmaking to prove her mother wrong. (DoucourΓ© wore a strapless dΓ©colletΓ© top to the closing event. Not sure how her mother would like that either.)

 

Now she’s working on a film about adolescent girls in Paris who are hyper-sexualized by a culture that pushes them to dress and pose like adults.

 

DoucourΓ© knows she is blazing a trail, pushing into territory that has not been attempted by others. She, too, knows the power of cinema.

 

When accepting her award, DoucourΓ© spoke incredibly eloquently: β€œI just want to say that a lot of horrible things happened in France and is still happening in several countries around the world,” she said. β€œI think where policy fails cinema can help to bring people together. We need cinema to know each other and love each other. Today we chose love.”

 

DoucourΓ© spent the week in L.A. before heading back this weekend to work on her film about adolescent girls. We were privileged to get to meet her, as I’m pretty sure we’ll being hearing from her again β€” soon.

Global investors continue to pour cash into China despite coronavirus uncertainty & tensions with US

 

China attracted 84.1 billion yuan ($12.3 billion) in foreign direct investment (FDI) last month – 18.7 percent more than a year earlier – as the world’s second-largest economy continues to rebound after the Covid-19 outbreak.

 

August marked the fifth consecutive month of FDI growth, according to data from China’s Commerce Ministry. In the first eight months of this year, investment inflows jumped 2.6 percent to 619.8 billion yuan.

 

China remains a hot investment destination as it is one of only a few nations that managed to avoid falling into recession after the coronavirus outbreak rattled the global economy. After a record slump in the first quarter, China’s gross domestic product (GDP) beat forecasts in June, rising 3.2 percent.

 

Beijing has been stepping up its efforts to attract global investors. On Friday, senior Chinese officials said that the country is betting on the fast-growing service sector to support investors. They also revealed that the Chinese capital is looking to become a β€œnational comprehensive demonstration zone” as it implements a range of measures, including facilitating cross-border flows of capital, support for overseas securities and futures firms, and encouraging foreign companies to participate in stock and bond trading.

 

β€œForeign investors have expressed a strong wish to get into the telecommunications sector,” China’s Vice-Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said on Friday, as quoted by CGTN. β€œNow the plan will allow foreign companies to invest in virtual private networks (VPNs), with a proportion of foreign shares not exceeding 50 percent. Overseas telecommunications providers can set up joint ventures to provide such services for foreign enterprises in Beijing.”

 

Investment inflows into China continue to grow despite rows with the US on multiple fronts. In addition to pressuring Chinese businesses on its own territory, the Trump administration has been attempting to persuade American companies to ditch China. While businesses are concerned about bitter trade tensions between the world’s two leading economies, US enterprises are reluctant to pack up their things, a recent survey by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Shanghai showed. According to the poll, over 78 percent of companies do not want to change their investment allocations. As for moving out production, the survey found that just four percent of firms would relocate some capacities to the US, while 70 percent have no such plans.

Swedish PM U-Turns, Admits Connection Between Migration and Crime

 

Prime Minister Stefan LΓΆfven has U-turned and admitted that there is a link between migration and Sweden’s rising levels of violent crime.

 

The Social Democrat leader admitted that there is a connection between crime and migration during a debate in the Swedish Riksdag on Wednesday.

 

Mr LΓΆfven said: β€œWith a large migration, where we cannot cope with integration, then there is also a greater risk of the kind of problems that we see. It’s crystal clear.”

 

The prime minister’s statement came in response to questions posed by populist Sweden Democrats (SD) leader Jimmie Γ…kesson, who slammed the Swedish leader for refusing to admit any connection between migration and crime as recently as earlier this week, Nyheter Idag reports.

Bahrain and Israel β€œwill exchange embassies and ambassadors, begin direct flights between their countries and launch cooperation initiatives,” Trump announced at an Oval Office press conference.

Arson Probe Opened Into Deadly Oregon Wildfire: Police Chief

 

ASHLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - Arson investigators have opened a probe into the suspicious origins of a deadly Oregon wildfire that began in the town of Ashland and destroyed hundreds of homes in nearby communities, Ashland's police chief said on Thursday.

 

The remains of two victims have been found in ruins from the blaze, which erupted on Tuesday and roared through a third day in the midst of a spate of wildfires across Oregon, according to a spokesman for the state fire marshal.

 

More bodies are expected to be discovered as search teams comb through the wreckage of dwellings that were engulfed during a chaotic evacuation of populated areas along the path of the swiftly spreading flames, Ashland police chief Tighe O'Meara said.

 

"We tried to get people out as fast as we could," O'Meara told Reuters by phone. "Chances are there are going to be bodies in some of those homes. The likelihood of much larger (fatality) numbers is significant."

 

The blaze, dubbed the Almeda fire, originated Tuesday morning in Ashland, a city of some 21,000 residents in southern Oregon just 16 miles (26 km) from the California border that is home to Southern Oregon University and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

 

The flames, driven by high winds, did relatively little damage to Ashland but quickly spread out of town and into neighboring communities along Bear Creek before roaring through the adjacent towns of Talent and Phoenix toward Medford, a city of 82,000 residents, O'Meara said.

 

He cited local news media estimates that roughly 600 homes were destroyed but added, "easily hundreds of homes were lost."

 

Reuters video footage from the fire zone showed miles of burned-out vehicles, flame-scorched ruins of gutted buildings and twisted debris lining state highway Route 99 in between Ashland and Medford.

 

The area was off-limits to evacuees, but here and there individuals and couples were seen trudging along the roadway with arm loads of belongings they apparently had managed to salvage from the wreckage of their homes.

 

Police in Medford as well as in Douglas County to the north cautioned against rumors that left-wing anti-fascists and right-wing Proud Boy extremists were starting the fires.

 

Rich Tyler, a spokesman for the state fire marshal's office, said separately that it was not immediately clear whether any of the fires raging across Oregon this week were deliberately set.

 

"Every fire is investigated for the possibility of arson so that we can either determine it is or rule it out," he said.

Medicare administrator Seema Verma can’t be blamed for falling victim to the fantasy that is Instagram. And while most of us were spending our own money, Verma just so happened to be in a position to bill taxpayers for her goofy-ass glow up to the tune of some $6 million.

That’s right in less than two years, Verma billed Americans $380 an hour to pay for consultants she hired to bolster her personal image in the hopes of winning awards that would place her on a list of powerful women and influential people, Associated Press reports.

One contractor, Pam Stevens, who’s done extensive work for the GOP, charged up to $330 hourly to pursue ideas like asking publications including β€œOprah Magazine” and β€œGarden and Gun” to write articles about Verma. Stevens also seemed to bill at least $1,117 to arrange an interview that resulted in a Verma profile in AARP The Magazine, the report said.

The contractors were β€œhandpicked” by Verma’s aides, the report said, creating β€œa shadow operation” that sidelined the communications staff of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The consultants’ work often had nothing to do with running Medicare, Medicaid and other massive health programs that the agency operates, said the 56-page report, which was backed by over 1,700 pages of documents. Verma has run the agency since 2017.

 

Needless to say, some members of Congress didn’t believe that Verma should be using taxpayer money to get her IG popping.

β€œCongress did not intend for Administrator Verma or other senior CMS officials to use taxpayer dollars to stockpile CMS with handpicked consultants or promote Administrator Verma’s public profile and personal brand,” a report by congressional Democrats said Thursday.

β€œGiven the reckless disregard she has shown for the public’s trust, Administrator Verma should reimburse the taxpayers for these inappropriate expenditures,” it said.

Because we now live in an alternate reality where everything is defensible, even blatant disregard for taxpayers’ funds so that an appointed official can step her flossing game up, one jackass, I mean, Health and Human Services Department official defended Verma, calling the report, β€œpolitical smear” by β€œfar left politicians.”

As wildfires burn throughout Oregon and close in on Portland, a number of arrests and reports suggest that some of these fires may have been started intentionally. The FBI has dismissed reports of arson as β€œconspiracy theories.”

Multiple wildfires are ripping through Oregon, with local media reporting seven dead as of Friday. Governor Kate Brown has evacuated more than 40,000 people, and the state’s emergency management director, Andrew Phelps, said on Friday that authorities are preparing for a β€œmass fatality event.”

 

Phelps also warned that the fires are β€œknocking on the doorstep” of Portland. With the sky over the city blotted out by ash and smoke, Mayor Ted Wheeler declared a state of emergency on Thursday night.

 

Portland has been an epicenter of β€˜Black Lives Matter’ and antifa riots since May, and rumors circulating online have accused some of these activists of starting the fires intentionally. The FBI attempted to squash these rumors on Friday, declaring them β€œconspiracy theories and misinformation,” and urging citizens to only share β€œvalidated information from official sources.”

 

However, reports of arson have not come solely from anonymous Twitter accounts and conspiracy cranks. Hours after the FBI’s tweet was posted, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office announced that deputies had discovered spent fireworks next to a bush fire in Corbett, a few minutes’ drive from Portland.

 

Multiple suspects have been arrested and charged with arson within the city itself, with the arrestees usually linked to the ongoing protests and riots. Previously, Molotov cocktails have been thrown at police officers, buildings set on fire, and powerful fireworks launched at federal agents protecting the city’s Justice Center and courthouse.

 

However, law enforcement officers have caught several arsonists outside Portland too. A man was charged on Friday with multiple counts of arson after allegedly setting a wildfire near Phoenix in southern Oregon on Tuesday. Officers arresting the man found him standing near a large blaze that was threatening several houses, and discovered two ounces of methamphetamine on his person. His political leanings are unknown.

 

In central Oregon, a 44-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of arson, with deputies accusing him of torching nearly 400 acres of land west of the city of Eugene.

 

While law enforcement officials say they’ve been flooded with false calls blaming the fires on Antifa arsonists, a fire that began in Ashland is under criminal investigation after human remains were found at its origin point. The fire quickly spread, and merged with the same blaze that the alleged Phoenix arsonist was arrested and charged for starting.

 

Further north in Washington state, a man was charged on Friday with starting a fire alongside a rural highway two days earlier. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Jeffrey Acord, live-streamed his arrest on Facebook, but denied starting the fire. Acord had professed support for Black Lives Matter on Facebook, and had previously been arrested with a cache of weapons at a protest in Seattle in 2014.

 

It is not known, however, if his alleged fire-starting on Wednesday was politically motivated.

If you caught COVID-19, you likely ate at a restaurant, CDC report finds

 

A new report by the CDC has linked COVID-19 cases to dining at restaurants.

 

In a month-long investigation completed in July, the CDC analyzed symptomatic outpatients from 11 U.S. health care facilities and found that adults who became infected with COVID-19 had reported dining at indoor or outdoor restaurants two weeks before getting sick.

 

β€œAdults with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than were those with negative SARS-CoV-2 test results,” the CDC wrote.

 

For the study, 154 symptomatic adults formed the case-patients and had tested positive for COVID-19. They were then compared to control participants, which included 160 adults who were symptomatic outpatients from the same health care facilities with negative test results.

 

According to the report, there weren’t significant differences observed between the groups when it came to participating in activities that didn’t include going to a restaurant. They included: retail shopping, gyms, salons, using public transportation, gatherings of 10 or less in a home, going to an office setting, or going to a bar or coffee shop.

 

So, why the discrepancy? The big culprit was the use of masks.

 

β€œExposures and activities where mask use and social distancing are difficult to maintain, including going to places that offer on-site eating or drinking, might be important risk factors for acquiring COVID-19,” the CDC wrote. β€œMasks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use.”

 

The CDC added that reports of exposure in restaurants have been linked to poor air circulation where direction, ventilation and intensity of airflow might affect the transmission of the virus, even if restaurants are following guidelines.

 

β€œAs communities reopen, efforts to reduce possible exposures at locations that offer on-site eating and drinking options should be considered to protect customers, employees, and communities.”

 

In San Francisco, restaurant patrons are required to wear face masks whenever they wait to be seated, leave the table or when a server takes their order. Masks are not required only when eating or drinking. But even as restaurateurs have adapted to the new normal, regulating mask usage is a complicated dance between being hospitable and following safety rules.

 

"There’s not enough money to have five extra staff just lifeguarding everybody to have a mask on between every bite," Ben Bleiman of Tonic Nightlife Group and the San Francisco Entertainment Commission told SFGATE last month. "We’re not kindergarten teachers. We’re really good at making people follow the rules, but asking somebody to do something seven times is really hard when it doesn’t rise to an egregious error."

This is my view as a Lockheed Martin whistleblower who faced James Comey.

As Lockheed’s Lead Counsel James Comey was willing to put the entire governments secret Internet and the safety of Coast Guard crews at risk.

James Comey said at his confirmation hearing, on his decision not to bring charges against Hillary Clinton, that his two priorities are his family and his integrity. My priorities are the same.

 

The problem is that 10 years ago Mr. Comey felt it appropriate to use his power to put his priorities above mine as well as the nation’s. That lauded integrity is apparently very selective. It seems to morph based on the desires of his employer.

 

In June of 2006 I received a hand signed letter from Mr. Comey. He was Lockheed Martin’s general counsel at the time and was responding to my letter to the CEO regarding serious safety and security issues on the Coast Guard’s post 9/11 Deepwater Program. The objective of that program was to modernize our dilapidated Coast Guard in a post 9/11 world.

 

I was the lead engineer of the first major deliverable project. The WPB-123 effort was meant to lengthen, repair and upgrade 44 WPB-110 patrol boats. During my first few months on the job I raised several extremely serious issues.

 

Eventually I brought them to the CEO and Board of Directors because I could find no relief in any of the various chains of command that reported to them. Mr. Comey responded back that the customer, the US Coast Guard, was well aware of the issues and that everything was resolved to their satisfaction.

 

Problem is the USCG had already pulled every one of the first 8 boats modified from service. And in the summer of 2007 rejected the boats and asked for their money back. Soon after the USCG took over the program from the contractors.

 

The issues I raised were extremely serious. Particularly in a post 9/11 worldFirst keep in mind that due to a contractual requirement every electronic system on every boat or aircraft needed to be matched, unless there was an overriding reason not to.

 

Since the 123 project was the first out of the gate it was setting a precedent for every asset the USCG created or upgraded with the same functional requirements. Those issues included most of the external electronic equipment not being able to withstand bad weather or temperature extremes and the classified communications system leaking information.

 

The latter issue included the government’s classified email system called SIPRNet. If communications on any 123 were compromised anyone listening would receive any secret communication that passed through them. And it wouldn’t be just USCG communications.

In closing I have a few questions?

 

Did Mr. Comey do the right ethical, moral and patriotic thing? Did he put himself and his family’s need above the country? Can it all be explained away by saying he had an obligation to defend his client? Exactly what would have happened to him if he helped me? Maybe he would lose his job. I suggest if he did with a resume like his he would have been fine. If not lauded for taking on Lockheed. Is it possible he was duped and realizes now he made a mistake? If Mr. Comey were asked about this today what would he say? What was his motivation and what was he thinking? Was what he did a mistake for the country? Should he have supported me? How does he feel about the impact this had on my family and career? Had I not stopped the contractors would he be good with the Coast Guard having ships that could operate in bad weather? Would he be good with our enemies receiving many of our governments secret communications? Or might he decline to comment or defend what he did? If he thinks it was a mistake would he ask Lockheed to restore my career? To make me and my family whole for the lost career, multiple moves and the bankruptcy? Would he acknowledge he put his career ambitions above national security and the safety of USCG crews?

Mr. Comey not only did the wrong thing for the country and me and my family (and I would suggest even Lockheed Martin) he demonstrated selective ethics and integrity and certainly did not handle a β€œwhistleblower” properly.

The President Pledges to Put Election Night Riots 'Down Very Quickly'

Amidst talk by left-wing radicals and anarchists of not accepting a victory by Donald Trump, there is increasing concern that an organized effort to disrupt America by rioting and looting in the streets might be made.

 

Realizing this, Trump pledged to quash any riots on election night. The possibility of unrest increases as state and local officials are warning they will be unable to call a winner in their states on election night due to mail-in ballots.

The remarks from the president came in an interview with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro set to air Saturday, in which he was asked how he would respond to incidents of rioting should he be declared the winner on Nov. 3.

 

β€œWe’ll put them down very quickly if they do that. We have the right to do that. We have the power to do that, if we want,” Trump said.

 

β€œLook, it’s called insurrection,” he added. β€œWe just send in, and we do it very easy. I mean, it’s very easy. I’d rather not do that because there’s no reason for it, but if we had to, we’d do that and put it down within minutes.”

 

 

Trump’s problem is that the β€œinsurrection” would be spread out over several cities. But any threat to American democracy β€” including intimidation of those who are counting the votes on election night β€” must be put down with as much force as needed. It is absolutely necessary that the mob not dictate who wins elections in the United States.

 

It is unclear whether there will be rioting on election night or if the White House race will even be called in the hours after the polls close, due to the significant expansion of mail-in voting amid the coronavirus pandemic.

 

Trump has expressed vocal opposition to voting by mail, asserting without evidence that the virtual ballot-casting practice would result in widespread voter fraud and yield unfavorable electoral results for Republicans.

 

Does anyone really believe the mob cares if the race is called on election night or not? Trump referred to possible election night violence as β€œan insurrection” and that’s exactly what it is. Whatever plans that will be executed that night will go forward regardless of who is ahead.

 

Trump has the option of deploying federal law enforcement to polling places to keep order and make sure voters are free from intimidation.

 

We’re going to have everything,” Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity. β€œWe’re going to have sheriffs, and we’re going to have law enforcement, and we’re going to have, hopefully, U.S. attorneys, and we’re going to have everybody and attorneys general.”

 

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows insisted that Trump was not advocating a form of voter suppression, and Attorney General William Barr argued that sending federal agents to voting sites would be legal if they were responding to a β€œparticular criminal threat” or β€œspecific investigative danger.”

 

One need only look at the intimidation by antifa and other radicals who confront ordinary people at restaurants or out in the street to know that these people are capable of anything..

 

In the days and weeks that follow election night, as the two parties fight to count β€” or not to count β€” votes, the likelihood of violence in the streets increases. Democratic mayors who have heretofore refused to put down the insurrection will be overridden as Trump looks to protect the integrity of the vote β€” and American democracy.

QAnon spreads across globe, shadowing COVID-19

 

The QAnon movement is spreading around the world, turning an outlandish conspiracy theory revolving around President Trump into one of the nation’s most dangerous exports.

 

Flags and banners brandishing one of the conspiracy’s mottos β€” β€œWWG1WGA,” an acronym for β€œwhere we go one, we go all” β€” dotted the crowd at a rally against lockdowns in Germany last month.

 

And when Trump visited Japan in 2019, he was greeted by cardboard cutouts of the letter Q.

 

These aren’t just isolated instances either. Researchers have found large QAnon communities in more than 70 countries.

 

The original conspiracy theory was tightly focused on an alleged cabal of deep state figures and Hollywood elites running child trafficking rings that Trump was working with the military to expose. But it has since evolved into a meta-conspiracy theory that pushes its anti-institution and anti-Semitic strains more explicitly.

 

Experts who spoke with The Hill about the theory’s spread said it has become worse because of the coronavirus, which itself is the subject of many conspiracy theories. This helped create a perfect storm fostering distrust in established government and public health institutions.

 

β€œPandemics fuel a lot of questions and make people very skeptical, especially in cases when what we would consider to be credible and trustworthy institutions all of a sudden themselves don't seem to have the right answers or are not aligned on how to manage the situation,” Anna-Sophie Harling, head of media evaluation startup NewsGuard’s Europe team, said in an interview.

 

β€œConspiracies are rooted in the idea that we're all being lied to by some greater authority or voice and QAnon perfectly ties into that.”

 

The hyper-viral short documentary β€œOut of the Shadows” fueled baseless theories linking the coronavirus’s origins to Bill Gates, 5G towers and the World Health Organization, Alex Newhouse, digital research lead at the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism at the Middlebury Institute, told The Hill.

 

And as institutional distrust grew, QAnon, which pushed a lot of the disinformation in the first place, was able to grab a foothold.

 

Another way that the pandemic has contributed to the international spread of QAnon is by isolating people and leaving them with little to do but go online.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) β€” Vice President Mike Pence has canceled plans to attend a Trump campaign fundraiser in Montana following revelations that the event’s hosts had expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory.

President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign told The Associated Press on Saturday that Pence’s schedule had been changed, but the campaign did not provide a reason or say whether the fundraiser might be held at a later time. The change comes after the AP reported Wednesday that hosts Cayrn and Michael Borland in Bozeman, Montana, had shared QAnon memes and retweeted posts from QAnon accounts.

The baseless conspiracy theory alleges Trump is battling an entrenched bureaucracy and sex trafficking ring run by pedophiles.

Three Republicans seeking election in Montana also had been scheduled to attend the fundraiser: U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, who faces a November challenge from Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock; U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, a Republican running for governor; and state auditor Matt Rosendale, a candidate for the U.S. House.

Pence, Daines and the other Republican candidates are still scheduled to hold a campaign rally Monday afternoon in Belgrade, just east of Bozeman.

Daines campaign spokesperson Julia Doyle said the first-term senator does not know the Borlands nor β€œdoes he know what QAnon even is.” She referred questions on whether the event would be rescheduled to the Trump campaign.

The Borlands have donated over $220,000 to Trump’s reelection bid, the bulk of which was made in Caryn Borland’s name, and they were guests at the national GOP convention last month.

The QAnon narrative has grown to include other long-standing conspiracy theories, gaining traction among some extreme Trump supporters. The movement is often likened to a right-wing cult. Some followers have run for office, primarily in the Republican Party, though some have been independent or run as third-party candidates. Trump has refused to say QAnon is false.

Pence has said it’s a conspiracy theory and last month told CBS, β€œI don’t know anything about QAnon, and I dismiss it out of hand.”″

The Borlands have shared multiple QAnon social media posts, as well as other discredited conspiracies.

Michael Borland prominently featured several QAnon β€œQ” logos on his Facebook page. Caryn Borland has retweeted or engaged with QAnon Twitter accounts. In April, she responded to a pro-Trump Tweet from a QAnon account by replying β€œAlways” with a praying hands emoji.

The Borlands did not immediately return telephone messages Saturday seeking comment.

WE Charity, at the center of Trudeau’s latest scandal, shuts down in Canada

TORONTO β€” The charity at the center of an ethics scandal that has ensnared Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his former finance minister said on Wednesday that its co-founders would be stepping away and that the charity would be shutting down its Canadian operations.

WE Charity blamed the coronavirus pandemic and the political turmoil over the federal government’s decision to tap it to run a $690 million grant program for student volunteers for the decision. It said a loss of sponsors left it in an untenable financial situation.

β€œThe fallout from the Canada Student Service Grant has placed the charity in the middle of political battles and misinformation that a charity is ill-equipped to fight,” it said in a statement. β€œAs a result, the financial math for the charity’s future is unclear.”

The announcement marks a dramatic fall for WE Charity, an education and international development charity founded by brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger as Free the Children in 1995. Its youth empowerment rallies, or WE Days, drew speakers including Prince Harry and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

But for months, the Kielburgers, whose work once earned them an appearance on β€œThe Oprah Winfrey Show,” have found themselves on the defensive.

The controversy erupted in June when Trudeau announced that his government had picked the charity to administer a program that would offer grants to postsecondary students unable to find a job during the coronavirus outbreak if they volunteered in their communities.

The arrangement, under which WE Charity stood to earn up to $33 million, immediately raised eyebrows. Trudeau has spoken at several WE Days. His wife, Sophie GrΓ©goire Trudeau, is an ambassador for the charity. There was no public bid.

Amid the outcry, the deal was severed. Parliamentary committees launched probes. The country’s independent ethics watchdog said it was investigating Trudeau β€” for the third time β€” for alleged breaches of conflict-of-interest laws. He has twice found the prime minister in violation of them.

It was later reported that the Toronto-based charity and its for-profit arm had paid Trudeau’s mother and brother hundreds of thousands of dollars to speak at its events from 2016 to 2020, and covered their expenses.

Then, Finance Minister Bill Morneau in July apologized after revealing before a parliamentary committee that he had just repaid WE Charity more than $30,000 in travel expenses incurred when he and members of his family traveled with the organization to Kenya and Ecuador in 2017.

Trudeau and Morneau have apologized for failing to recuse themselves from the cabinet discussions on the deal. Trudeau said in parliamentary testimony in July that the public service recommended the charity for the program and that he had initially β€œpushed back” against the recommendation.

Morneau abruptly resigned last month. He said he didn’t intend to run in the next parliamentary election and that the country needed a finance minister who could chart the country through a long-term recovery from the pandemic-induced economic crisis. Opposition lawmakers said the resignation was tied to the scandal.

Trudeau suspended Parliament last month, promising to come back on Sept. 23 with a post-pandemic recovery plan. The suspension halts the work of the committees probing the deal, fueling cries of a β€œcoverup.”

WE Charity also has operations in the United States and Britain. It said in a statement that it would sell its assets to create an endowment fund that will be used to finish projects in Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Amid the controversy, the charity’s finances, real estate empire and governance model have come under scrutiny.

The Ontario government and several sponsors, including the Royal Bank of Canada and KPMG Canada, severed ties. School boards said they were reevaluating their relationship with the organization. The charity said in a statement that it forecast a loss of revenue β€œgiven the indeterminate length of time that political matters will continue.”

β€œThe fallout now from this political process has resulted in serious challenges that risk the entire organization and our 25 years of work,” Craig Kielburger told a parliamentary committee in testimony that was often tense in July.

β€œWe would never have picked up the phone when the civil service called asking us to help young Canadians get through the pandemic if we had known the consequences.”

Oregon fire marshal Jim Walker put on leave amid historic wildfires

 

Oregon’s fire marshal has been put on leave amid an unprecedented spate of wildfires that are burning throughout the state.

 

The Oregon State Police on Saturday announced Fire Marshal Jim Walker had been put on paid administrative leave. The state police did not detail why Walker was put on leave, but agency Superintendent Travis Hampton said a leadership change was needed.

 

Mariana Ruiz-Temple, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal, has been appointed the acting fire marshal.

 

"Mariana is assuming this position as Oregon is in an unprecedented crisis which demands an urgent response,” Hampton, state police superintendent, said in a statement.

 

β€œThis response and the circumstances necessitated a leadership change. I have the absolute confidence in Mariana to lead OSFM operations through this critical time. She it tested, trusted and respected – having the rare combination of technical aptitude in field operations and administration."

 

The fire marshal’s office is tasked with protecting people, property and the environment from fire and other hazards. Walker has served as fire marshal since 2014.

 

Wildfires have scorched more than 1 million acres throughout the state, spanning from the southern border to the coast and Clackamas County. That figure is about twice the yearly average over the past 10 years.

 

Seven people have been confirmed dead, dozens more are unaccounted for and hundreds have lost their homes.
