Okay so, struggling to find any aircraft dispatch sites, strange, Aus you can see all aircraft and where they are working.

Anyway, there is the following complexes that fit that area you mention:

• Greeg Mountain - [38.495, -122.35043] - (this is a big fecker, 363k acres, so would have had heavy metal on it).

LNU Lightning Complex (includes Hennessey, Gamble, 15-10, Spanish, Markley, 13-4, 11-16, Walbridge)

Terrain for this one looks like it could one to look closer at, just off Napa Valley. Very possible location.

Couple of small ones south west of there near Pentaluma. Small however and wouldn't expect there to have been much heavy iron on those, likely just mediums and light fixed wing.

-Quail Fire - [38.470809, -122.038208]. Possible deliberately lit fire, close to road access and got going, but not huge, wouldn't have expected any aircraft of much size there and ridelines dont really match the image.

Not looking into Mendocino, too much folliage on the terrain there to match the image. Napa area looks a good place to start.

Bingo - right, so just looking closer at the start position of this fire down at the intersection of Pope Valley Rd and Sage Canyon Rd, the ridge lines in this area fit the image well, and this was a big fire, also lot of asset in the area they would have laid mud for. That spot the image is taken will be something like a rest stop or look out etc. or as someone mentioned a road side, and the eastbound section of that road looks like it goes up into the higher terrain there.

Further to this, anyone got any details on when the image was posted to try work out time of day? Clear shadows indicate sun position top left, if we know time i can approx work out where North is to orientate the ridgelines and give a much better shot at maybe finding the ground location.

I think it's definitely going to be a bigger complex fire, much easier for outsiders to blend in unanounced than on a small fire where locals would pick them out far easier. All fire crews, ground and air all know each other or someone in a crew everywhere you go and if they don't they ask and chat.

Okay - here's a fire map off CalFire for the LNU Lightning complex. Gives us somewhere to start, we're looking for outside the burn area, as the image shows, and the retardant line is behind.

Looking at the image its possibly late morning or early arvo (due sun position), my guess is early arvo, so they are possible west of the retardant line, thus the western flanks of the fire ground, fire ground to the east of them. That would have us looking the western edges of the fire, near roads, with terrain that looks similar to the image.

Talking from first hand experience with a drip torch. It is a critical piece of equipment used year round by fire agencies to conduct aerial burning operations.

Theres many different versions of the same thing, however its generally a 200ltr/44gal size unit or holding tank with a pump and ignition source controlled from within the aircraft. Some countries have an on board fire department specialist who control the ignition, some allow pilots to activate it themselves based off burn plans and ground IC's.

Its highly useful and key to a lot of controlled burn operations, designed more so for open canopy operations as the gel needs to hit the ground to work properly, you'll never use a drip torch over solid forrest canopy it just sits in the tree tops and defeats its normal purpose of conducting ground fuel reduction burning.

For heavier canopy stuff you use a incendiary mchine which essentially drops ping pong balls containing a chemical powder that is injected with glycol on its deployment, about 30sec after it hits the ground the chemical reaction causes it to self combust and ignite ground fuel. Again, used widely around the world.

In bad fire seasons and when looking to create containment lines, if conditions allow typically a day or two after the start days when wind and conditions ease, then it can be very useful in back burning areas of danger if it takes off again.

Any questions, happy to answer, but sick of the crazy responses online to people saying its a drone starting fires. Never seen a drone that can carry 250kg of torch… or not be seen/photographed before.
