BREAKING: Hundreds of officers sweep Huntington in massive drug takedown

The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON — Hundreds of federal, state and local officials teamed up Tuesday morning on what's being described as a "major takedown" of drug traffickers in the area.

U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart, representing the Southern District of West Virginia, announced the effort at 11 a.m., after Huntington residents had noticed hours of heavy police presence across the area in the form of helicopters, airplanes and armed officers conducting rapid raids in different neighborhoods.

He told media members Tuesday's effort might be largest drug takedown in the state and definitely is the largest in Huntington.

Stuart first announced the formation of Project Huntington on March 15, in response to the growing opioid epidemic and an uptick of violent crime in southern West Virginia. On Tuesday, in a takedown of federal and state targets, nearly 100 defendants were targeted for arrest, Stuart said in a news release issued prior to the press conference.

The effort is believed to have dismantled the Peterson Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO), a major multi-state heroin and fentanyl distribution network that has operated in Huntington for nearly 15 years, according to Stuart.

“This wasn’t all show," he told the media. "We took down an entire network.”

The Peterson DTO had been trafficking large amounts of heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine from Detroit to be sold in Huntington in street-level gram quantities. In August 2017, investigators executed a search warrant at Manget Peterson’s residence and an associated hotel room, where workers were distributing heroin. Multiple sources advised that the Peterson DTO distributed kilogram quantities of heroin in Huntington on a near-weekly basis, using a network of re-distributors.

On Tuesday morning, Manget Peterson was apprehended in Huntington and his brother, Willie Peterson, was apprehended in Detroit.

Also on Tuesday:

n At least 15 individuals involved in the Peterson DTO have been charged in a federal indictment in the Southern District of West Virginia with conspiracy to distribute heroin and fentanyl;

n 15 individuals involved in the Peterson DTO were indicted yesterday in Cabell County Circuit Court on state charges;

n Additional members of the Peterson DTO will be arrested and charged in Detroit;

n 13 individuals involved in narcotics and/or firearms that have been charged in federal indictments in the Southern District of West Virginia; and

n At least 48 individuals are targeted for arrest on various narcotics, violent crime, and firearms related charges at the federal or state level as determined by the circumstances of each matter.

More than 200 federal, state and local law enforcement officers took part in Tuesday’s take-down effort, according to Stuart, including Huntington Police, Drug Enforcement Administration, Cabell and Wayne county sheriffs and Marshall University police. The West Virginia National Guard also provided a number of personnel in a support function to the operation.

In conjunction with the arrest and search warrants executed in Huntington today, Stuart said it is anticipated federal authorities in Detroit will soon be executing additional arrest warrants and search warrants. Additional charges will be brought against individuals in the Eastern District of Michigan.

“Today’s actions have removed from our streets enough fentanyl to kill more than 250,000 people and massive amounts of other drugs that would have wreaked havoc and misery on our good citizens," Stuart said. "Today is a turning point for the City of Huntington and in the war against the opiate nightmare."

This is a developing story. Check back for additional information as it becomes available.

WINNING!!!!!

Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor Continues Duties After Breaking Shoulder

WASHINGTON ― U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor broke her right shoulder in a fall at her home, but will continue performing her duties as usual, a court spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

“She will wear a sling for several weeks and will undergo physical therapy,” spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said in a statement.

The injury that she sustained on Monday marked the second medical issue that Sotomayor, 63, has faced this year. The lifelong diabetic was treated by paramedics for low blood sugar at her home in Washington in January.

Sotomayor, one of the nine-member court’s four liberal justices, was named to the court in 2009 by Democratic former President Barack Obama. She is the first Hispanic justice to serve on the court.

“Justice Sotomayor plans to continue with her schedule as usual,” Arberg said.

Major South Korean Crypto Exchange Coinone To Launch In Indonesia

South Korea’s third largest cryptocurrency exchange, Coinone, has announced plans to launch an exchange in Indonesia, according to a press release published on its site Monday, April 16.

As stated in the Coinone’s press release, the new Indonesian branch opened for pre-registration April 16, with an official launch set for June. According to Finance Magnates, the exchange will initially support six cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Ethereum (ETH), Ethereum Classic (ETC), Litecoin (LTC) and Quantum (QAU).

Users based outside of Indonesia will be able to use the platform after the pre-registration period, but will need to go through a separate KYC verification process, the exchange stated.

Coinone is currently ranked number 27 among crypto exchanges globally, with a 24-hour trading volume of $49 mln to press time. Finance Magnates reports that, according to the exchange, its overseas expansion makes it the “first among the top cryptocurrency exchanges in Korea to enter the global market.” Coinone explains that it chose Indonesia due to the country being “highly regarded for its potential growth in the Fintech industry.”

The company’s evaluation notwithstanding, Indonesia has a relatively tough crypto-regulatory climate. As of Jan. 2018, its central bank has adopted a harsh stance, warning citizens against selling, buying or trading cryptocurrency. Earlier, in October of last year, the bank reiterated that it does not recognize Bitcoin as a legal means of payment, causing two domestic crypto exchanges to shut down voluntarily.

On home territory, Seoul continues to actively regulate the country’s booming cryptocurrency sphere. On April 9, Cointelegraph reported that South Korea’s Financial Services Commission’s (FSC) has inspected three domestic banks serving crypto exchanges for compliance with anti-anonymity regulations that were introduced in January. Nonghyup Bank, Coinone’s service partner, is currently under scrutiny as part of these measures.

IMF: A major trade rift could imperil solid global economy

The International Monetary Fund warned Tuesday that rising trade tensions between the United States and China risk undermining a global economy that the IMF believes should otherwise grow solidly this year.

The IMF predicted Tuesday that the U.S. economy will grow 2.9 percent this year, up from the 2.7 percent it had forecast in January and from the 2.3 percent growth the economy achieved last year. The U.S. economy will benefit through 2020 from tax cuts that President Donald Trump signed into law in December, the IMF predicts.

The lending agency has kept its forecast for worldwide growth this year at 3.9 percent, which would be its fastest pace since 2011. But the IMF's chief economist, Maurice Obstfeld, told reporters that this bright outlook could be derailed by a major trade conflict.

Headless doll triggers major police operation in Germany

BERLIN – An apparent headless body that prompted a major police operation in southern Germany has turned out to be a doll.

Police in Baden-Wuerttemberg state say a passer-by spotted what appeared to be a clothed but headless corpse covered in blood lying by a stream in Remstal, near Stuttgart, late Monday.

Officers cordoned off the suspected crime scene and firefighters were called to retrieve the body, which was lying in an inaccessible place.

In a statement Tuesday, police said that only once firefighters reached the site were they able to determine that it was, in fact, a doll.

US hits major Chinese tech firm with export ban

The United States has cracked down on one of China’s biggest tech companies, banning it from buying components from American firms.

The move Monday by the US Commerce Department against ZTE, which sells smartphones and other telecommunications equipment around the world, comes amid a tense clash between the United States and China over trade and technology.

On the same day, ZTE also received a blow from the UK government, which warned telecom companies against using the Chinese firm’s equipment and services.

The US Commerce Department said that ZTE lied to American officials about punishing employees who violated US sanctions against North Korea and Iran. The Chinese company agreed to pay a $1.2 billion fine last year after a US investigation found it had illegally shipped telecommunications equipment to Iran and North Korea.

But instead of punishing those involved, “ZTE paid full bonuses to employees that had engaged in illegal conduct, and failed to issue letters of reprimand,” the Commerce Department said in a statement.

As a result, the department said it has imposed a seven-year export ban on ZTE, forbidding American companies from selling parts and providing services to it.

ZTE’s smartphones use microchips from Qualcomm and glass from Corning.

ZTE said in a brief statement Tuesday that it is aware of the US ban.

“At present, the company is assessing the full range of potential implications that this event has on the company and is communicating with relevant parties proactively in order to respond accordingly,” it said.

The company’s shares were suspended from trading in Hong Kong on Tuesday following the US announcement.

ZTE didn’t address the developments in the United Kingdom, where the country’s National Cyber Security Centre warned phone carriers that using the Chinese company’s equipment and services poses risks to national security.

The US crackdown on ZTE comes at a delicate time for economic relations between Washington and Beijing. The two sides have threatened each other with waves of new tariffs on tens of billions of dollars of exports.

China’s rise as a global tech powerhouse is at the heart of the trade clash. The United States accuses it of stealing American intellectual property and forcing companies to hand over sensitive technology.

Beijing has rejected the allegations, arguing that it is stepping up efforts to protect intellectual property and that any technology transferred from US companies was done so with their permission.

China’s Ministry of Commerce said Tuesday, that it “will closely follow the developments” in the ZTE case.

“ZTE has a wide range of trade and investment cooperation with several hundred American companies, providing the United States with thousands of jobs,” the ministry said in a statement.

“We stand ready to take necessary measures to protect Chinese companies’ legitimate rights and interests,” it added.

ZTE and Huawei, another huge Chinese company that makes smartphones and telecommunications equipment, have repeatedly come under fire in the United States in the past.

In February, US intelligence agencies warned Americans against buying ZTE and Huawei phones, saying the companies posed a security threat to American customers.

Huawei phones are already effectively shut out of the US market, but ZTE has made inroads. It accounted for 10% of the US smartphone market last year, making it the fourth largest supplier, according to market research firm Counterpoint Technology.

ZTE and Huawei’s alleged ties to the Chinese government were also the subject of a US congressional report in 2012 that focused on the equipment they make for telecommunications networks. The report said the companies “cannot be trusted to be free of foreign state influence and thus pose a security threat to the United States and to our systems.”

The Chinese companies strongly disputed the report’s findings.

Judge Clears Way for Major Class Action Suit Against Facebook Over Face Recognition

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a class action lawsuit against Facebook over the company’s face recognition practices, with potentially millions of plaintiffs, can move forward to trial.

In 2008, the state of Illinois established the Biometric Privacy Act, or BIPA. The law requires that all companies that collect biometric data (like thumbprints and photos to be used in face recognition) get consent and meaningfully inform people how their data is being used. Illinois alleges Facebook is violating BIPA because of how it collects use data for face recognition.

Facebook’s lawyers raised a suite of reasons why the case should be dismissed, Techcrunch reports, but most crucial is the concept of “actual harm.” When users’ data is mishandled or improperly maintained, are they hurt in any tangible way? Facebook argued that individual BIPA privacy violation isn’t “actual harm” by this standard, but Judge James Donato of the US District Court for California’s Northern District disagreed, finding that legal precedent supports the state’s claim that “injury to a privacy right is enough to make a person aggrieved under BIPA.”

Facebook also argued that Illinois law does not apply because its servers are not located in the state. Donato dismissed this fact as a reason to block the lawsuit.

AT LEAST THIS JUDGE has a backbone

The Granddaddy Of Modern Day Globalism (And His Arch-Enemy)

Eleven years ago this week, BBC Radio 4 aired an incredible documentary, an investigation into European anti-Americanism. The journalist behind this project, Justin Webb, travelled to France to meet some of the most influential voices of the hate America fad. One of them was Hubert Vedrine, the former French foreign minister and the intellectual grandfather of modern day globalism.

"Within globalisation," Vedrine said, "we need a set of rules which contain American power at the social level, the environmental level. That will become the real threat. It’ll even become a geopolitical tragedy if we don’t do anything. So my first reply is more rules within the international system and the multilateral system, which apply even to the US. It’s not against them, not against the United States, but a general containment strategy."

Vedrine greatly feared the grand “hyper-power” that was the United States, and he gave his reasons why:

I think the American people think they’re exceptional. They’re different with an exceptional destiny, a manifest destiny, not like the others. To a certain extent, it’s true, it’s a unique country, so they have this universalist pretension, this Messianic pretension, the sense that providence has chosen this American people to lead the world, to enlighten it. For a long time in the 18th and 19th century it was rhetoric, but since at least 1945 it was no longer rhetoric; it was a reality. The American people believe they have this special role to play and because of that the American people believe they can forget all the lessons of history, the real politik, the psychology of other nations. In addition, they are people with a mission. They believe they have a particular mission to convert the whole world to democracy, to human rights, to the market economy. So it’s a colonising people like the British and the French, but as a result of history the British and the French have learned it doesn’t work. They learned it was very complicated. They became more reflective. The United States believes in its message. That’s the big difference with Europeans. Europeans today no longer know what they believe. They’re gnawed by a sense of doubt. The Americans believe in themselves, but the world is more complicated than that.

Our legitimacy comes from ourselves. The United States was founded on the proposition that the only real form of legitimacy in the world is the consent of the governed and we were the first to believe that. Others believe it now too, but we don’t require external validation of our legitimacy. … If Europe spends its time distinguishing itself from the United States, it will weaken the collective power of pro-democratic, pro-market countries around the world. And I know there are plenty of people in Europe who spend a lot of time doing that – I’ve seen them in action. They’re entitled to that point of view, but I think it’s ultimately harmful to those interests we do have in common.

When Mr. Webb told him that some "very prominent" Europeans see it as their role "to hem in the United States, to make sure that it isn’t able to use its power nakedly around the world, that we need this counterbalance, this counterweight," it evoked laughter. Mr. Webb later returned to that point, explaining — "What they say is that they have a historical perspective that allows them sometimes to correct the over enthusiasms, if I can put it that way, of some people this side of the Atlantic." To this, the man replied:

You remind to me why we declared our independence in the first place.

On Monday, a newly-released report alleged that at least one surveillance company is harvesting Facebook data to create a massive facial recognition database.

The revelation comes just one week after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared before the House Energy and Commerce Committee to talk about the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Forbes reports that for the last several years, a secretive surveillance company founded by an ex-Israeli intelligence officer has been using Facebook, YouTube, and other websites to compile an extensive facial recognition database. Forbes notes:

That database forms the core of a facial recognition service called Face-Int, now owned by Israeli vendor Verint after it snapped up the product's creator, little-known surveillance company Terrogence, in 2017. Both Verint and Terrogence have long been vendors for the U.S. government, providing bleeding-edge spy tech to the NSA, the U.S. Navy and countless other intelligence and security agencies.

Privacy activists are concerned that building a facial recognition database based on data from social media platforms could lead to abuse from tech giants, the government, and hackers. An example of the type of situation that many fear is what China is doing with facial recognition. Fast Company reports:

Traffic authorities in the Chinese city of Shenzhen have teamed up with an AI firm named Intellifusion to carry out the rather dystopian policing…using Intellifusion software and cameras to identify passing jaywalkers and project their faces and identifying information on large screens located near intersections for all to see, but now Intellifusion is taking its surveillance a step further. The company is partnering with social media platforms including WeChat and Sina Weibo and local mobile phone carriers so it can text jaywalkers the second they offend.

MIGHT HAVE FOUND THE WHY…

NOTICE SHENZEN IS NAMED..as the possible home of this shit..
