Dump the dollar: Goldman warns US currency could plummet

Investment banking giant Goldman Sachs has recommended short positions against the US dollar, arguing that the risks arising from Covid vaccine trials and the US presidential election are skewed to the downside for the greenback.

The bank’s analysts said in a note to investors that they saw “low odds” for the most dollar-positive outcome by the end of 2020, which are an electoral win by Donald Trump, combined with a meaningful delay to vaccine progress.

They also highlighted that closely-watched indicators, such as event-prediction markets and public models, now put the chances of a Democratic clean sweep or “blue wave” – winning the White House, Senate and House – at over 60 percent.

Smoke seen spewing from NUCLEAR submarine in Scotland

Images shared to social media from Scotland purport to show a nuclear submarine with smoke billowing from its tower in Helensburgh, Scotland. There has been no official confirmation of a fire.

Twitter users speculated that the submarine was on fire while sharing images of the boat flanked on all sides by tugboats.

Others suggested that the smoke might be a sign of the Royal Navy's switch over from diesel engines to nuclear ones on its submarine fleet.

The submarine is likely based at Her Majesty's Naval Base, Clyde, located at Faslane on the Gare Loch, near the town of Helensburgh.

The base is the Royal Navy's headquarters in Scotland and houses the UK’s nuclear arsenal on board its submarine fleet armed with Trident missiles.

Soon after the initial slew of reports of a possible fire, The Royal Navy reportedly confirmed the submarine was carrying out a "cold move" in which the vessel is moved around a harbor but without the use of its own propellers.

The smoke was merely the result of the boat's diesel engines firing up and running normally.

Chinese IPOs on US exchanges accelerated under Trump – report

Pressure on Chinese firms has failed to stop them from listing on the US stock market, with the number of IPOs during Trump’s four years in office almost reaching those during the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency.

Some 102 Chinese companies have listed their shares on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq since Donald Trump became president almost four years ago, according to data from research firm Dealogic, as cited by the Financial Times. That’s almost the same number of Chinese IPOs seen during Obama’s time in office, when 105 companies debuted on the US stock market in eight years.

Cecil Rhodes

Some great men have streets named in their honour, even greater men have towns or even cities named after them, so how to compare a man after whom they named large swathes of Africa? That man was Cecil Rhodes, who founded the colonies of Southern and Northern Rhodesia, renamed Zambia in 1964 and Zimbabwe in 1980.

Born in 1853 at Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire, Cecil was the sixth child of the Reverend Francis and Louisa Rhodes. A sickly child, Cecil suffered generally from a weak chest and in particular was asthmatic. It was possibly due to this ill health that he was denied the public school education that his three brothers enjoyed at Eton and Winchester, and why he was sent instead to the local grammar school.

Three years after his arrival in the colony Cecil had amassed sufficient funds from his business ventures to buy himself the ‘gentleman’s education’ he had previously been denied. And so in 1873, leaving his business partner C D Rudd to look after things in the colony, Cecil set sail for England and Oriel College, Oxford.

Over the next eight years Cecil bounced back and forth between his Greek and Latin classics studies at Oxford, and his business interests in the dust bowls of the Kimberley mines. During his stints as an undergraduate at Oxford it is said that he paid his way from a box of diamonds he kept in his pocket. By the time Cecil graduated at the age of 28 he was an extremely rich and influential man indeed. He was a member of the Cape Parliament, and through some very astute business dealings and amalgamations he had become Chairman of the De Beers diamond company.
