Cyprus to abolish cash-for-citizenship scheme after probe alleges passports were offered to convicted criminals

Cyprus will stop offering passports to wealthy foreigners in exchange for a large investment in the country, following reports that the system was being routinely abused.

The island nation said on Tuesday that its Citizenship by Investment (CIP) scheme will be abolished starting from November 1, after Al Jazeera published an undercover investigation which claims to document how the program was plagued by corruption.

“The proposal was based on the timeless weaknesses but also on the abusive exploitation of the provisions of the program,” the Cyprus Presidency said in a tweet announcing the government’s plan to suspend the scheme.

In its explosive report, Al Jazeera alleged that Cypriot politicians are “willing to aid and abet convicted criminals to obtain Cypriot citizenship.”

U.N. Ready to Welcome China, Russia, Saudi Arabia to Human Rights Council

China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Cuba and Pakistan are tipped to finish top of Tuesday’s election for seats on the United Nations Human Rights Council, prompting disbelief from freedom campaigners and exiled dissidents alike.

U.N. Watch, a Geneva-based monitoring group, said allowing these countries anywhere near the council “is like making a gang of arsonists into the fire brigade.”

Saudi Arabia was previously on the council until 2019. Just last month, dozens of nations condemned it before the council over serious rights violations and demanded accountability for the murder Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post newspaper columnist who was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

China, which is under fire over its treatment of ethnic Uyghurs in the far western region of Xinjiang and its imposition of a National Security Law in Hong Kong, is already preparing to take its seat.

This is in defiance of a coalition of 70 Uyghur organizations that have already called on the U.N. not to vote in favor of China’s membership, given its extensive record of human rights atrocities, as Breitbart News reported.

What is most interesting is the timing of Gina Haspel's last tour as London Station Chief – from 2014 to early 2017. That is the same timeframe (specifically, the late summer of 2016) when the FBI approached foreign policy academic and "utility government operative" Stefan Halper to begin the operation targeting Carter Page and George Papadopoulos in an FBI-designed foreign counterintelligence operation, against Team Trump, to be launched in Cambridge, England.

The CIA Station Chief is the top intelligence official in any given country. The FBI must inform the Station Chief of what they planned to do and get Station Chief approval. The FBI hates that, but those are the rules. Because the various intelligence agencies are sensitive, they do not use the word "approved." Instead, they use the word "coordinated." Jargon aside, nothing would have happened without Haspel's okay.

Gina Haspel is the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Haspel is the first career clandestine service officer to become director, and the first woman. She was the CIA Chief of Station in London twice, and that repeat assignment is very unusual. What is most interesting is the timing of Haspel's last tour as London Station Chief from 2014 to early 2017. Nothing speculative here the Justice Department Inspector General pegged the exact date of the FBI/Halper meeting as August 10, 2016. Halper had been on contract (again) with the U.S. government since the Iowa Caucuses began in October 2015. For the sake of brevity, I am not discussing Halper's role in targeting former Defense Intelligence Agency Director, Lieutenant General Mike Flynn. That is another column for another day and certainly Haspel knows a great deal about that, as well.

McConnell announces he will hold vote on small business loan bill

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Senate Republicans will attempt to move forward on a targeted bill to re-start the small business loan program that served as a centerpiece of the coronavirus relief efforts when the Senate returns to session next week — a sign that prospects for broad stimulus agreement have all but faded before Election Day.

“Republicans do not agree that nothing is better than something for working families,” McConnell said in a statement referencing the small business loan Paycheck Protection Program. “The American people need Democrats to stop blocking bipartisan funding and let us replenish the PPP before more Americans lose their jobs needlessly.”

The move by Senate Republicans is the latest in months of back and forth between the two parties and the Trump administration — with the partisan majorities in both chambers passing or attempting to pass their own preferred legislation, only to have it rejected out of hand by the opposite side. Throughout the Trump administration has made several attempts to negotiate with House Democrats, but a breakthrough has remained far out of reach throughout the course of the summer.
