It's probably a WebP image extension, which won't even open half the time when saved locally. It's common for some websites to do though. If you select View Image when left clicking the image and open the separate URL, there's usually some gobble-de-gook at the end that if you delete it and reload the URL, the image will show and save as a standard JPG or PNG instead.

 

For example:

https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/10/hunter-biden-1.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=360

Take off this part and reload/save image:

?quality=90&strip=all&w=360
