Today in 1878, Thomas Edison established the Edison Electric Light Company in New York City.

Advanced $30,000 for research and development by wealthy financiers, Edison’s big idea was to connect his lights in a parallel circuit. This would mean that if one bulb blew, it wouldn’t take out the entire array like the arclights of the time.
