McCarrick report is one small step to dismantling clerical culture

It has long been understood by those who take a measured and thoughtful assessment of his papacy that the story of St. Pope John Paul II was sent off to the printer long before it was ready.

The narrative had not had time to mature, to incorporate the layers of complexity that marks us as truly human, to account for contradictions and flaws. The McCarrick report is the most persuasive evidence to date that the appellation "The Great" was applied too soon. In that regard, the report also serves as warning not to rush to conclusions about the abuse crisis itself.

John Paul II, confronted with the most damaging scandal the church faced in centuries, ignored the disturbing warnings from victims and from bishops entrusted with the care of the flock and instead embraced the adulation and counsel of serial predators. In doing so, he became not a figure of the courage that he persistently demanded of others, but the highest profile example of a corrupt hierarchical culture responsible for perpetuation of the abuse disgrace.

The editors of this publication do a great service to the church, and to sexual abuse victims, by asking the U.S. bishops to put the brakes on the John Paul II cult. It is, indeed, time to rein in the cult that has grown up around a garish superhero version of a pope.

The greatest value of the recent report, however, is not in establishing the weight of blame for the McCarrick debacle, though that is significant. Its greatest value is establishing that for all of his legendary achievements on the international front, at home John Paul II was a rather pedestrian member of a culture that has deep underlying maladies that became manifest in the abuse crisis. What he did, which warrants condemnation today, was not extraordinary at the time. He did what was expected of one deeply invested in and rewarded by the culture. He protected it at all costs, ignoring credible and impassioned warnings about McCarrick and another of his favorites, Marciel Maciel Degollado, founder of the corrupt Legionaries of Christ. The costs have been globally destructive of the church's credibility and authority.

Alleging sex abuse, 4 sue Vatican over handling of McCarrick

Four people who have accused defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of sexual abuse are suing the Vatican.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in Newark, New Jersey alleges the Vatican should be held liable for allowing McCarrick to serve in multiple positions in New York and New Jersey when it knew there had been numerous allegations of sexual abuse against him.

McCarrick was once one of the highest-ranking Roman Catholic officials in the U.S. He was defrocked last year.

An internal Vatican report released last week found that bishops, cardinals and popes downplayed or dismissed multiple reports of sexual misconduct by the now-90-year-old McCarrick.

The Vatican couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

McCarrick’s Brazen Behavior: Vatican’s Report Underscores How He Hid His Abuses in Plain Sight

COMMENTARY: McCarrick never attempted to slink around in the shadows, lest he appear to have something to hide. He was more devilishly clever than that.

Who was the first person to forward written accusations about Theodore McCarrick to the police? Who was the first to pass them on to the apostolic nuncio?

The McCarrick Report gives us this shocking and very illuminating answer: McCarrick himself. And that is the principal explanation why “Uncle Ted” — right down to that very name — got away with so much for so long. He was so brazen in his behavior that it neutralized the reactions of so many.

Most attention to the McCarrick Report has focused on how ecclesial governance and clerical culture systematically failed to stop McCarrick’s rise. That is understandable, given that McCarrick himself has been defrocked and has disappeared from public view. While the attention focuses on who knew what when, some additional attention is merited to how McCarrick — the principal villain — did it. Without Ted McCarrick, after all, there is no McCarrick Report.

How did he do it? McCarrick never attempted to slink around in the shadows, lest he appear to have something to hide. He was more devilishly clever than that, figuring out that the best place to hide was in plain sight.

He groomed boys — though that term was not used in the 1970s — in front of their parents. The report includes the testimony of one mother who wrote anonymous letters to various prelates in the 1980s. (No records, originals or copies, of those letters were found.) She relates an incident in which McCarrick, sitting on the couch between her two sons, was massaging their inner thighs. This took place directly across the living room from her husband, who noticed nothing awry. McCarrick counted on just that dynamic. If “Uncle Ted” was being Uncle Ted in front of everyone and in plain sight, how could anything be really wrong?

About that “Uncle Ted.” It was not a private, confidential moniker, meant to throw a veil of secrecy over everything. McCarrick broadcast it far and wide, even hosting annual “Uncle Days” in his dioceses for all his “nephews.” If “Uncle Ted” was an official entry on the archdiocesan calendar, it had to be on the up-and-up, no?

The secondary villain of the McCarrick Report is Bishop Edward Hughes, McCarrick’s successor in Metuchen, New Jersey. He was singular, having direct firsthand testimony from priests who had had sexual encounters with McCarrick. (Nobody reported firsthand or secondhand knowledge of abuse of minors until 2017.) Bishop Hughes did not report what he knew, even when explicitly asked in the critical investigation of May 2000 before the appointment of McCarrick to Washington.

What McCarrick may or may not have done to induce Bishop Hughes’ silence is not in the report; Bishop Hughes died in 2012.

Vatican sued over alleged sex abuse in wake of its report on disgraced ex-Cardinal McCarrick

A week after an explosive report by the Vatican detailing decades-long allegations against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick involving the sexual abuse of young boys, seminarians and fellow priests, the first federal lawsuit stemming from that report has been filed against the Roman Catholic Church.

A stunning 85-page complaint filed in New Jersey on behalf of four unidentified men against the highest echelons of the church charges the Vatican knew McCarrick “was a suspected abuser and child molester” and a danger to its members, but did nothing to stop him.

The plaintiffs include a current priest offering the remarkable circumstance of a sitting cleric suing the Vatican, a sovereign entity, in a U.S. court.

“There are children today who are in imminent danger of abuse because (the) Holy See has failed to report or release the names of agents that have either been convicted or credibly accused of molesting children,” the lawsuit alleged.

The lawyer representing the men said all were referenced in the Vatican report and had been interviewed as part of its two-year investigation into McCarrick, the former archbishop of the Newark Archdiocese and later Archbishop of Washington, D.C.

Attorney Jeff Anderson said the Vatican was sued because “all roads lead to Rome.” He said every case that has been brought forward has brought ultimately led to practices, protocols and policies implemented by the pope.

In a press conference, Anderson said three popes, 33 cardinals and countless bishops have been named and identified as having condoned or been complicit.

Four people who say they were abused by former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick — including a working priest — filed a federal lawsuit against the Vatican on Thursday seeking documents related to the church's recent report on what high-ranking officials knew about allegations against McCarrick years ago.

The priest worked in New Jersey in the 1990s at the time of the alleged abuse and his allegations were documented in the report on McCarrick that the Vatican released last week. The priest provided details about the abuse to Metuchen Bishop Ed Hughes in 1994, the report said, but was told to forget about it "for the good of the church."

Jeff Anderson, the attorney who filed Thursday's suit, said he believed his client is the first "sitting cleric" to sue the Vatican. He did not identify the priest or say where he is now working. None of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit was named in court documents.

The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court in New Jersey. McCarrick, who was laicized last year after church officials determined he abused minors and adults, had been head of the Metuchen Diocese and later the Newark Archdiocese when the abuse alleged in the suit occurred.

Anderson said he represents five people who were abused by McCarrick. One of them, John Bellocchio, was not part of Thursday's lawsuit but filed a similar complaint in New York federal court last year. He also filed a lawsuit in New Jersey state court last year alleging that McCarrick abused him when he was 14 years old during the prelate's visit to St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Hackensack in 1995 or 1996.

The plaintiffs in Thursday's lawsuit include a man who filed a lawsuit in New Jersey state court this year alleging that he was abused by McCarrick and other priests at a New Jersey beach house in the early 1980s, starting when he was 14 years old.

One plaintiff alleged McCarrick abused him when he was 14 years old and attending a New York church. The abuse allegedly occurred in Pennsylvania.

The two other plaintiffs, including the priest, said they had been abused as adults.

Anderson said three popes, 33 cardinals and hundreds of bishops had helped to cover up McCarrick's alleged abuse or were complicit in some way. He praised the release of the Vatican report on McCarrick, saying it was a break from the Vatican's "strict adherence to secrecy," but said his clients want more information.

"They simply want the truth to be told," he said.

The report laid blame for McCarrick's continued rise in the church on three bishops, including Hughes, who allegedly misled Pope John Paul II by withholding information from the Vatican as it conducted an investigation in 2000 in advance of McCarrick's promotion to Archbishop of Washington, D.C. All three bishops are deceased.
