Austin-based star wouldn’t rule out saying alright, alright, alright, but records show he’s only voted twice in eight years, skipping elections for governor and president.

Matthew McConaughey hasn’t ruled out a run for governor of Texas, the actor said in an interview Tuesday, but records show he’s voted only twice since registering in Austin eight years ago.
McConaughey was promoting his new book, New York Times bestseller Greenlights on The Hugh Hewitt Show when Hewitt asked if he would run.
“It would be up to the people more than it would me,” McConaughey said. “I would say this. Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”
McConaughey registered to vote at his Austin address in 2012, after the presidential election. Since then, Travis County records show that he has voted only twice, in the 2020 and 2018 general elections. That means he skipped 26 opportunities to vote, including the 2014 gubernatorial election – primary and general – when Texans elected Republican Greg Abbott, who won a second term in 2018 and will be up for reelection again in 2022.
He also skipped the 2018 primaries, and the 2016 presidential election, primaries and general, and the 2020 primaries.
He voted by mail in the Nov. 3 election, Travis County records show.
The 51-year-old actor now lives in Austin. He was born in Uvalde, west of San Antonio, and is a 1993 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
The actor has been staunchly apolitical, often avoiding political questions in interviews, leaving his partisan leanings in question. In the interview Tuesday, he shied away from talking about political parties and said he wants to “get behind personal values to rebind our social contracts with each other as Americans, as people again.”
Texas doesn’t register voters by party. Voters can choose which primary to vote in each election, though they can’t vote in a runoff if they participated in the other party’s primary in the same year.
“I still question how much you can really get done in politics, and I don’t know if politics is my avenue to get what maybe I am best equipped to get done,” he told Hewitt.
When President Donald Trump was elected in 2016, McConaughey broke with other Hollywood celebrities in their critiques of him and called for unity instead. Tuesday, he repeated a similar message about President-elect Joe Biden.
“Coming out of the election right now, we’ve got to stabilize,” McConaughey said. “This country’s got to stabilize first before we start to say okay, here’s how we’re marching out of this together forward.”
McConaughey wouldn’t be the first celebrity to run for governor in Texas. Singer-songwriter Kinky Friedman ran for governor as an Independent in 2006 and lost to Republican Gov. Rick Perry with 12.6% of the vote.
In order to run for governor of Texas, you must be at least 30 years old and a resident of Texas for at least five years before the election, and you shall not hold any other office nor practice any profession nor collect a salary from any person or corporation while serving as governor, according to the Texas Constitution.
