Once again, table tennis helped illustrate the important role Detroit has played in Chinese-American relations.

 

State Rep. Cynthia Johnson and Chinese Consul General Zhao Jian had a friendly game earlier this month at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center during an event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the U.S. and China.

 

It was 47 years ago when a series of table tennis exhibitions were held in Detroit, Ann Arbor and other cities. Known as β€œping-pong diplomacy” it showcased world-class table tennis players from the United States and the People's Republic of China.

 

The Chinese government had invited the American team to visit. It marked the first time Americans were formally invited to the country since it adopted communism in 1949.

 

The Detroit China Day event was held Sept. 13 to celebrate that anniversary. It was hosted by the City of Detroit along with the North American Chinese Coalition as leaders from Detroit, Lansing, Chicago and a delegation from Chongqing were on hand.

 

The Detroit China Business Association has been paving the way for two-way economic relations.

President Richard Nixon then visited Beijing in 1972. Two months later, the Chinese team landed in Detroit and played friendly matches in the Motor City and other cities.Ultimately, diplomatic relations were established on Jan. 1, 1979.

Hunter Biden served with the consultant, Sally Painter, on the board of the Truman National Security Project. Biden reportedly recommended that Burisma hire Painter’s firm, Blue Star Strategies.

Emails show that Painter approached Tony Blinken about Ukraine at a conference for the think tank in June 2016. Blinken is now a top campaign surrogate for Joe Biden.

A Democratic consultant working for Burisma Holdings and connected to Hunter Biden approached Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken at an event for a liberal think tank in June 2016 to arrange a meeting to discuss β€œtroubling events” in Ukraine, State Department emails reveal.

At the time, Sally Painter, a consultant for Blue Star Strategies, was working for Burisma to quash investigations into corruption at the Ukrainian energy company. She was reportedly put in touch with Burisma through Biden, who joined the firm as a director in April 2014.

President Trump was right about the β€œdeep state” β€” sort of. There exist, in government, people and forces rigged to foil disruption.

 

But the deep state isn’t, as he suggested, a reflexive defense of a corrupt status quo. It’s a righteous defense against the corruption of democracy, which he continues to attempt.

 

And that defense is holding. Three cheers for the deep state, which has been on a roll these past three weeks.

 

I’m thinking of Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s secretary of state, who supervises its elections. He refused to cry foul and fraud just because others in his party couldn’t abide Joe Biden’s victory in a state that hadn’t gone to a Democrat in a presidential election for nearly three decades.

 

β€œPeople are just going to have to accept the results,” he told The Washington Post. β€œI’m a Republican. I believe in fair and secure elections.” He ordered a recount, but as President Trump, the two U.S. senators from Georgia and plenty of others on the right pilloried him, he stuck to his assurance that a fair and secure election was precisely what Georgians had participated in and what had delivered the state’s electoral votes to Biden.

 

He was bolstered on Tuesday by another top-ranking Georgia official, another Republican not about to let the republic go to hell. Gabriel Sterling, Georgia’s voting system implementation manager, scolded and shamed Trump at a news conference at the state Capitol, warning the president that his unwarranted smearing of the balloting in Georgia was β€œinspiring people to commit potential acts of violence” and that β€œsomeone is going to get killed.”

 

β€œIt has to stop,” he said. That was the deep state speaking, and its words were gold.

Also in my deep state: Judge Stephanos Bibas of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia, a Trump appointee who, in a blistering ruling on Friday, rejected the president’s efforts to invalidate millions of Pennsylvania ballots. β€œVoters, not lawyers, choose the president,” he wrote on behalf of the three judges hearing the case, all appointed by Republicans. β€œBallots, not briefs, decide elections.” Such statements of the obvious, and such sweet, sweet relief.

 

Was there a seed of truth in Trump’s fulminations about insiders so stuck in their ways and attached to their stations that they might balk instinctively at newcomers and new ideas? Absolutely. That’s a danger within any sprawling and enduring organization. It’s something to watch for and worry about.

 

But Trump’s watching was paranoid. His worry was hysterical. And his motive wasn’t the improvement of government but the inoculation of self. The deep state saw through that, and the deep state stirred.

 

β€œDeep state” isn’t the right term β€” its overtone is too clandestine, its undertone too nefarious β€” but let’s go with it, co-opt it, turn a put-down into a point of honor, the way gay rights activists did with β€œqueer” and anti-Trump feminists did with β€œnasty woman.”

 

Let’s define it ourselves, not as a swampy society of self-preserving bureaucrats in Washington but as a steadfast, tradition-minded legion of public officials and civil servants all over the country, in every branch of government.

These officials and servants are distinguished by a professionalism that survives and edges out their partisan bearings, by an understanding that the codes of conduct and rules of engagement become more important, not less, when passions run hot. They’re incorrigible that way. Invaluable, too.

 

β€œThank God for the deep state,” John McLaughlin, a former deputy and acting director of the C.I.A., said in October 2019 at a panel on election security at the National Press Club in Washington. It was organized and sponsored by the Michael V. Hayden Center for Intelligence, Policy and International Security at George Mason University, and McLaughlin’s fellow panelists were other former leaders of the C.I.A. and F.B.I.

 

But my deep state is both deeper and broader than those agencies. It extends beyond the diplomats (William Taylor, Marie Yovanovitch) and security officials (Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman) who played starring roles in Trump’s impeachment.

 

Anthony Fauci is the steely superhero of my deep state, and he’s flanked and fortified by all the government health officials who also pushed back against the quackery of Scott Atlas, the Trump-flattering pandemic adviser who resigned on Monday.

 

They belong to a quiet and then not-so-quiet resistance that blunted, thwarted or tried to blunt and thwart Trump’s worst impulses when it came not just to public health but also to foreign policy, immigration, the environment. In The Times late last week, Lisa Friedman described such efforts within the Environmental Protection Agency.

 

β€œWith two months left of the Trump administration,” she wrote, β€œcareer E.P.A. employees find themselves where they began, in a bureaucratic battle with the agency’s political leaders. But now, with the Biden administration on the horizon, they are emboldened to stymie Mr. Trump’s goals and to do so more openly.”

 

That’s the deep state rearing up. That’s the deep state roaring. It should be music to our ears.

Bottom line, IMO, you can't have a GA runoff that will just lend authenticity to the original election. Have to be major fucking changes to voting procedure before that vote occurs, or the original has to be thrown out and re-done the right way.

 

If you're a lawyer, and take a client who wants to contest an election, what chance does he have to say the original election was flawed if millions of voters vote in a runoff with the exact same procedure as the original. "The will of the voters", "Can't disenfranchise millions of voters", etc., etc,. out the ass from corrupt judges once the runoff takes place. Here Are The Rules On When Presidents Can Use Military Force Without Asking Congress

Presidents have relied on their Article II powers to use force overseas, and their attorneys have argued that the Constitution authorizes them to do so.

 

After President Trump authorized airstrikes in Syria, lawmakers and some pundits questioned his authority, or said he needed congressional approval. Some misunderstood the War Power Resolution, others ignored Article II of the Constitution, and others turned it political by comparing it to President Obama’s 2013 decision to seek congressional approval, implying Trump’s decision was wrong.

 

This is not a political article. Instead, it outlines the president’s authority to use military force without congressional approval. Historically, presidents have regularly used military force without congressional approval. More recently, that has included President Trump in Syria, President Obama in Libya in 2011, and President Clinton in Kosovo in 1999.

 

Arguably, all three authorized airstrikes for humanitarian purposes couched in the interest of national security. Using force strictly for humanitarian intervention is not currently a recognized legal basis in the United States, but national security is. Domestically, military force is authorized under the Constitution in three ways: (1) Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, on when Congress β€œdeclares” war; (2) Article 1, Section 8, on when Congress authorizes the use of force; and (3) Article II under the president’s inherent commander-in-chief powers.

 

Declaration of War Versus Authorization to Use Force:

Authorization and declaration are different because they have different legal ramifications. Congress has enacted 11 declarations of war related to five different wars. Ten of the 11 declarations were made based on armed attacks or direct threats against U.S. interests. The other declaration was against Spain in 1898 when Spain refused Cuban independence.

 

Declaring war creates a state of war. Eight of the declarations use the language β€œstate of war.” A state of war has international and domestic legal consequences. Internationally, a state of war replaces a β€œstate of peace,” transforming a law of peace into a law of war. With war:

 

partnerships are dissolved,

treaties abrogated,

commercial relations and all contracts suspended, and

States can do what is necessary under the law of nature (precepts codified by the Hague and Geneva conventions) to cause the other state to submit to reason and justice.

Domestically, a declaration triggers federal statues that give the president special powers, such as: (1) interdiction of trade, (2) ordering businesses to produce war material, (3) authority over nationals of the enemy state in the United States under the Alien Enemy Act, (4) certain use of electronic surveillance, (5) wide discretion on appointment and reappointment of commanders, and (6) control and command of transportation and communication systems.

 

Congress has not declared war since 1945, but has authorized the use of military force abroad. A big difference is that authorizations do not trigger the above. They’re normally limited in time, space, duration, and objects. Their scope is often broad, though. Interpretations broaden as the inherent powers of the commander-in-chief expand. Congress has also granted wide authorities to presidents from John Adams on.

 

Article II’s Inherent Presidential Powers

While Article I vests in Congress the power to raise armies, appropriate funds to support them, and declare war, Article II vests in the president an inherent authority to conduct U.S. foreign affairs and use military action to protect the national interest as the commander-in-chief.

 

Historically, congressional consent has not been required when a president exercises Article II powers. President Obama’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) outlined how Obama had legal authority to use force in Libya without congressional authorization. Relying on past OLC opinions regarding Somalia and Haiti, the OLC said the president had authority to use military action as commander-in-chief for national security and foreign military affairs. Obama’s OLC went further to say two centuries of history confirms presidential authority to use military force absent Congress (quoting β€œPresidential Power,” 4A Op. O.L.C.).

 

In 1999, President Clinton relied on constitutional authority when he authorized an air campaign in Kosovo without congressional approval. He relied on his U.S. foreign relations, commander-in-chief, and chief executive authority. There was concern he violated the War Power Resolution (WPR) given the duration of military action.

(KTLA) – All residents within the city of Los Angeles should continue to remain in their homes and follow the city’s β€œsafer-at-home” order, which mirrors guidance from L.A. County, according to the mayor’s office.

 

A public order posted on the mayor’s website Wednesday detailed many of the restrictions, including a ban on some travel with a variety of exemptions.

 

Email and text alerts from the city’s NotifyLA System also went out Wednesday, although the mayor’s deputy press secretary, Harrison Wollman, said the guidance has been in place for days.

 

β€œThe city uploaded the most recent version of its safer-at-home order today to match the county’s current order that was enacted earlier this week,” Wollman said. β€œThe two orders are identical, and the process of publishing the official document on our website is a formality that occurs each time the order is revised.”

Many residents were notified with an email and text alert from the city’s NotifyLA System Wednesday night. A spokesman for the mayor’s office said although the NotifyLA System alerts were accurate, they did not include new restrictions.

 

Non-exempt businesses in the city have been ordered to cease operations that require in-person attendance of staff. There is a broad list of exceptions for various businesses and workers deemed essential or exempt.

 

People may lawfully leave their residences only to engage in defined essential activities.

 

Those experiencing homelessness are exempt from the requirement to stay inside.

 

Mirroring the county’s order, all public and private gatherings with people from more than one household are prohibited, except for outdoor faith-based services and protests.

 

Failure to comply with the new health order will constitute a misdemeanor subject to fines and imprisonment, according to the document. The mayor urged the Los Angeles Police Department and the city attorney to β€œvigorously enforce this.”

 

β€œMy message couldn’t be simpler,” Garcetti said in his earlier briefing. β€œIt’s time to hunker down. It’s time to cancel everything. And if it isn’t essential, don’t do it.”

 

The new order comes after Los Angeles County reported a total of 2,439 people hospitalized for the virus Wednesday, more than on any other day during the pandemic.

Matthew McConaughey hasn’t ruled out a run for governor of Texas, the actor said in an interview Tuesday, but records show he’s voted only twice since registering in Austin eight years ago.

 

McConaughey was promoting his new book, New York Times bestseller Greenlights on The Hugh Hewitt Show when Hewitt asked if he would run.

 

β€œIt would be up to the people more than it would me,” McConaughey said. β€œI would say this. Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.”

 

McConaughey registered to vote at his Austin address in 2012, after the presidential election. Since then, Travis County records show that he has voted only twice, in the 2020 and 2018 general elections. That means he skipped 26 opportunities to vote, including the 2014 gubernatorial election – primary and general – when Texans elected Republican Greg Abbott, who won a second term in 2018 and will be up for reelection again in 2022.

 

He also skipped the 2018 primaries, and the 2016 presidential election, primaries and general, and the 2020 primaries.

 

He voted by mail in the Nov. 3 election, Travis County records show.

 

The 51-year-old actor now lives in Austin. He was born in Uvalde, west of San Antonio, and is a 1993 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.

 

The actor has been staunchly apolitical, often avoiding political questions in interviews, leaving his partisan leanings in question. Machine rejected ballots go into a special folder. They should be looked at manually to determine the vote. They're not.

 

They use these ballots to run the algorithms on, then file them aware somewhere. The recount didn't look at these ballots, just the tallies on the servers.

 

When things got out they disabled the ballot readers (white out strips, for example) to make more for the special folder, or they printed or shipped in more mail-ins that the machines also couldn't read.

 

My guess.

 

We need to see and visually determine ballots that the machines rejected.
