June 5th: Donald Trump’s Day From Hell

2017

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Well, if you were Donald Trump today, it was really just the worst of times. He finally got one thing he’d been hoping for, but it backfired. Then he had one of his most stunning meltdowns to date. Here’s a look at how June 5th was Donald Trump’s Day From Hell.

Things started off with Sarah Huckabee Sanders filling in for Sean Spicer in the press briefing. But let’s just say it didn’t go particularly well, with Sanders already finding herself worn down by the need to constantly lie on Trump’s behalf, leaving her sounding a lot like Spicer – which we covered here.

Then came word that Trump’s demented response to the London terror incident, in particular his ongoing personal attacks on the mayor of London, has led Republicans in Congress to begin looking for the “off ramp” to his presidency – as we covered here.

After word over the weekend that Kellyanne Conway’s husband George Conway had turned down a White House job offer, George took things further by calling out Donald Trump on Twitter – as we documented here.

Finally, Trump got his wish when his administration arrested someone named “Reality Winner” who had leaked secret NSA intel to the media. Trump had been demanding the arrest of leakers for some time. But this backfired spectacularly, as the info she leaked confirmed that Russia rigged the election for Trump, and her arrest confirmed that the leak was indeed real intel – as we covered here.

By the end of the day, Donald Trump was reduced to tweeting in such recklessly angry fashion that he probably sunk any chance his Muslim ban might have had of ever going into effect. And in the process, he sounded a lot like the unabomber, as we covered here. Follow Palmer Report on Facebook and Twitter. If you’re a regular reader, feel free to support Palmer Report

Ghislaine Maxwell to file new motion for release on bail, according to court filings

CNN)Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend and alleged accomplice who is currently being held in jail, will file a new motion for release on bail, according to court filings.

Maxwell's attorneys told the court that she has "assembled substantial information that was not available to present" when she was denied bail at her initial hearing, as well as a proposed bail package that would be co-signed by family members and friends "who were unable to come forward at that time."

In filings made under seal in November and unsealed Friday, Maxwell's lawyers told a federal judge that her new bail application "will rely on sensitive and private information that, if made public, would be highly damaging to both Ms. Maxwell and third parties," in part because the third parties would be subject to harassment and media scrutiny.

They also told the judge that Maxwell will provide a report prepared by an accounting firm that summarizes her financial condition in the past five years and discloses all of her assets, including assets held in trust and assets held by other family members. Maxwell's opaque finances were one of the reasons she was denied bail. According to a joint filing from Maxwell's lawyers and federal prosecutors, Maxwell will file the new bail application under seal on Dec. 7, with a redacted version to be filed publicly.

NYC Bar Owner Accused of Defying COVID-19 Rules Struck Deputy With Car: SheriffNEW YORK — The co-owner of a New York City bar that authorities said has been defying coronavirus restrictions was taken into custody early Sunday after running over a deputy with a car, authorities said.

Danny Presti fled from his bar, Mac’s Public House, after deputies observed patrons entering the establishment Saturday night in violation of city and state closure orders, Sheriff Joseph Fucito said.

Deputies attempted to arrest Presti as he left the bar early Sunday, but Presti got into his car, struck a deputy and kept driving for about 100 yards even as the deputy was left hanging onto the hood, Fucito said.

Presti, 34, was eventually stopped and apprehended, the sheriff said. Charges against him were pending.

The injured deputy was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries. The deputy’s condition wasn’t immediately available.

An email seeking comment was sent to an attorney representing the bar’s owners.

The Staten Island bar was the site of protests last week after the sheriff’s office said plainclothes officers were able to go inside and order food and beverages on Tuesday. Presti was arrested at the time.

The tavern is in an area designated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo as an orange zone because of spiking COVID-19 rates and was not supposed to be serving customers indoors. But the owners had declared the bar an “autonomous zone,” a nod to protesters who claimed control over a Seattle neighborhood in June.

== Biden's 100-day mask plan 'a good idea,' Trump's vaccine chief says

"It's never too late," said Moncef Slaoui, the scientific head of Operation Warp Speed.==

The head of the Trump administration's efforts to speed up a coronavirus vaccine on Sunday endorsed President-elect Joe Biden's plan to ask Americans to wear masks for the first 100-days of his administration.

"I think it's a good idea," Moncef Slaoui, the scientific head of Operation Warp Speed, said in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union." "It's never too late."

An initial vaccine could be just days away, officials are predicting, with an FDA advisory panel slated to meet this week to review a vaccine produced by Pfizer. But with massive inoculation months away and coronavirus cases and deaths soaring, Slaoui said precautions are still needed. A million new cases were diagnosed in the United States in the first five days of December.

"We have a vaccine. There is light at the end of the tunnel," he said. "But we will not all have the vaccine in our arms before May or June. So, we need to be very cautious and vigilant."

"We all need to take our precaution, have our masks, wash our hands, and keep our distance, remain aware that this virus is a killer," Slaoui said.

Biden, who frequently emphasized mask-wearing during the presidential campaign, announced Thursday that he'll ask Americans to wear a mask for the first 100 days after his inauguration to help blunt the spread of the virus.

Anthony Fauci, the top government infectious disease expert, said Friday that he'd spoken to Biden about the plan and called it "a good idea."

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ratcheted up its mask-wearing guidance. The public health agency for the first time is recommending the people wear masks at all times when they're not at home.

== German experts defuse WWII-era bomb found in Frankfurt

German explosives experts have successfully defused and disposed of a 1,100-pound bomb in the country’s financial capital Frankfurt, which was dropped during World War II and discovered during recent construction== BERLIN – German explosives experts successfully defused and disposed of a 500-kilogram (1,100 pound) bomb Sunday in the country's financial capital Frankfurt, which was dropped during World War II and discovered during recent construction.

About 13,000 residents were evacuated from the city's Gallus district and trains were stopped from running through the area as Hesse state experts went to work on the bomb.

The bomb was found during construction Thursday and experts had estimated they would need at least six hours to defuse it, but they were able to complete their work in under two hours, the dpa news agency reported.

By evening, Deutsche Bahn said trains were running again and residents were able to return to their homes. Around 700 who were unable to find places to stay with friends or family during the operation were looked after in Frankfurt's convention center.

Even 75 years after the end of World War II, such finds are relatively common in Germany, testament to the ferocity of the conflict.

Biden Needs African Americans in Top Cabinet Roles, Bass SaysThe Biden administration should name an African American to fill at least one of the remaining two top cabinet positions, said Representative Karen Bass, a California Democrat who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus.

“It would be great if he did it for defense secretary, and there are two individuals that the Congressional Black Caucus would like to put forward – Lloyd Austin and Jeh Johnson,” she said in an interview Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Austin is a retired four-star general and Johnson was homeland security secretary from 2013 to 2017.

President-elect Joe Biden has filled two of the so-called big four cabinet positions Antony Blinken for secretary of state and Janet Yellen as Treasury secretary both of whom are white. For the other two positions – attorney general and defense secretary, Bass said Biden needs to consider Black candidates, and the Congressional Black Caucus is meeting with the Biden administration weekly on upcoming appointments.
