Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell fractured his shoulder Sunday after falling in his Kentucky home, his office said in a statement.

"This morning, Leader McConnell tripped at home on his outside patio and suffered a fractured shoulder," David Popp, McConnell's communications director, said in a statement. "He has been treated, released, and is working from home in Louisville."

McConnell's injury comes as Democrats demand he reconvenes the Senate to pass gun control legislation after a pair of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio this weekend left 29 people dead.

Popp added that McConell had spoken to Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Rob Portman of Ohio to convey his condolences for the deadly shootings in their states.

The senators discussed "the senseless tragedies of this weekend," McConnell's office said.

"The Leader will continue to work from home," the statement read.

Trump Is Considering Clemency for Silk Road Founder

Two sources tell The Daily Beast that the president has expressed sympathy for the situation of Ross Ulbricht, who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

In his final weeks in office before Joe Biden’s inauguration, President Donald Trump is weighing granting clemency to Ross Ulbricht, the founder and former administrator of the world’s most famous darknet drug market, Silk Road, The Daily Beast has learned.

According to three people familiar with the matter, the White House counsel’s office has had documents related to Ulbricht’s case under review, and Trump was recently made aware of the situation and the pleas of the Silk Road founder’s allies. Two of these sources say the president has at times privately expressed some sympathy for Ulbricht’s situation and has been considering his name, among others, for his next round of commutations and pardons before the Jan. 20 inauguration of his 2020 Democratic opponent.

It is unclear if Trump has arrived at a final decision yet, but Ulbricht has gained some influential backers in the president’s political and social orbit. Behind the scenes, he has the support of some presidential advisers, as well as criminal justice reform advocates with close ties to the administration and Trump family, including Alice Johnson, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

“I’ve had documents forwarded to my contacts in the White House as early as February,” activist Weldon Angelos, a former music producer and ex-federal inmate, said in a brief interview on Tuesday evening. “In the beginning of the year, [Ulbricht’s] family had reached out to us for our support, and my organization and I have endorsed his full commutation, and I am hopeful that President Trump will commute his sentence in its entirety. This case has perhaps more support than I’ve seen in any case of this kind.”

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on this story Tuesday.

March 17, 2014

A Quebec Jewish group said the apology of a Parti Quebecois candidate who has been accused of anti-Semitic remarks is nothing more than “meaningless excuses.”

Louise Mailloux, a staunch supporter of the PQ’s proposed secular charter, came under fire last week for written comments equating the Jewish practice of circumcision to rape.

Mailloux also suggested in an old blog post that the high price of kosher goods is used to help fund Jewish activities and political interests abroad.

The PQ candidate and philosophy professor issued an apology on Saturday, saying she didn’t mean to offend anyone and made the comments in the context of a debate over religious accommodation in Quebec.

But Luciano Del Negro, a spokesperson for the Quebec branch of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said that the apology isn’t enough.

He said the PQ must “categorically disavow” the anti-Semitic theories put forward by Mailloux.

PQ Leader Pauline Marois has stood by Mailloux and emphasized her party does not harbour anti-Jewish views.

“Madame Mailloux adheres to the Parti Quebecois program and adheres to our attitudes and those are very respectful of people’s right to choose their convictions and how they practise their religion,” Marois said Friday.

Neighbors of Mar-a-Lago sent a letter to the Town of Palm Beach and the U.S. Secret Service on Tuesday complaining that Mr. Trump has violated the 1993 agreement he made with the town that allowed him to convert the property to a moneymaking club.

“Per the use agreement of 1993, Mar-a-Lago is a social club, and no one may reside on the property,” wrote Reginald Stambaugh, a lawyer representing the DeMoss family, which has a property next to Mar-a-Lago.

“To avoid an embarrassing situation for everyone and to give the president time to make other living arrangements in the area, we trust you will work with his team to remind them of the use agreement parameters,” Mr. Stambaugh wrote. “Palm Beach has many lovely estates for sale, and surely he can find one which meets his needs.”
