Spillway tunnels for Chinese mega hydropower project completed

Xinhua | Updated: 2020-12-20 07:49

KUNMING - The construction of the Baihetan hydropower station in southwest China is proceeding smoothly, with the main part of the spillway tunnel project completed on Saturday.

The hydropower station is equipped with three spillway tunnels, with a maximum discharge capacity of about 12,000 cubic meters per second and a flow speed of about 47 meters per second.

Baihetan is on the Jinsha River, the upper section of the Yangtze, straddling the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan. Baihetan is the second-largest in China after the Three Gorges Dam project in the central province of Hubei in terms of installed capacity.

The first batch of Baihetan's generating units is scheduled to start operation in July 2021. The mega power station is expected to generate more than 62 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year on average after its completion and will play a vital role in reducing emissions and preventing floods.

Trump filed in Supreme Court Today – Triumph of Hope over Experience?

December 20, 2020

The Trump campaign has filed an emergency motion in the Supreme Court on Sunday to reverse Pennsylvania’s state court rulings that “illegally changed” the state’s mail balloting laws. Therefore, they seek to send the selection of the electors for Pennsylvania to the legislature who has the legal authority to appoint new presidential electors. They asked for an emergency hearing saying that “the outcome of the election for the presidency of the United States hangs in the balance.” They further added:

“Time is plainly of the essence because once candidates have taken office, it will be impossible to repair election results tainted by illegally and belatedly cast or absentee and mail ballots,” the petition states. “The intense national and worldwide attention on the 2020 presidential election only foreshadows the disruption that may well follow if the uncertainty and unfairness shrouding this election are allowed to persist.”

If the Supreme Court does not accept this petition and rule on the merits rather than dancing with the procedure and using illegal “discretion” to simply avoid the entire election, then there is absolutely no reason why the protestors would not surround the Supreme Court for they are condemning the nation to uncertainly and the protests will become bloody and it will NOT be just one group anymore.

If there are no courts to hear disputes, then there is no civilization. In the Declaration of Independence, one of the chief complaints was that the King would charge someone and then to ensure he would be found guilty, he transported you and you were put on trial in London. That is why in the Sixth Amendment, you are to be tried where the crime took place. In the United States, the federal courts violate that principle all the time. They will always charge people in New York despite the fact the alleged crime took place elsewhere. This is why fair trials in the United States DO NOT exist – hence their 99% conviction rate.

If the Supreme Court rejects this petition, they have surrendered the law to “discretion” and that is the end of the United States. The Supreme Court has reduced itself to the status of a hypocrite.

Trump Campaign Files Supreme Court Challenge to Overturn Election Results in Pennsylvania

December 20, 2020

President Donald Trump’s campaign team on Sunday filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse cases by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that changed mail-in ballot laws.

The campaign’s case (pdf) is attempting to reverse three cases decided by the state’s Supreme Court that “illegally changed” the mail-in ballot laws “immediately before and after the 2020 presidential election.” The lawyers contended that the Supreme Court’s decisions are in violation of Article II of the Constitution and the 2000 Bush v. Gore ruling.

The lawsuit is seeking “all appropriate remedies,” which includes the vacation of electors that were committed to Joe Biden and allowing the Pennsylvania Legislature to call up their own electors. The Electoral College already voted on Dec. 14, although the GOP in Pennsylvania said their own electors cast votes for President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in a bid to preserve legal challenges in the state.

“The Campaign also moved for expedited consideration, asking the Supreme Court to order responses by December 23 and a reply by December 24 to allow the U.S. Supreme Court to rule before Congress meets on January 6 to consider the votes of the electoral college,” according to the Trump news release, authored by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. “This represents the Campaign’s first independent U.S. Supreme Court filing and seeks relief based on the same Constitutional arguments successfully raised in Bush v. Gore,” it added.

Furthermore, they argued, the lawsuit will attempt to reverse several decisions that “eviscerated the Pennsylvania Legislature’s protections against mail ballot fraud.”

They alleged that these laws prohibited election officials from checking whether mail-in ballot signatures were genuine during Election Day canvassing, removed the right of certain campaigns to challenge the ballots when they were canvassed for forged signatures or other issues, prohibited campaign poll observers from getting close enough to the ballot-tabulation efforts in some areas like Philadelphia, and removing the statutory requirement stipulating that voters properly sign, address, and date mail ballots.

“Collectively, these three decisions resulted in counting approximately 2.6 million mail ballots in violation of the law as enacted by the Pennsylvania Legislature,” Trump’s lawyer John Eastman wrote (pdf), adding that “more than enough” ballots are involved to affect the election outcome.

Eastman asked that the Supreme Court require Secretary of Commonwealth Kathy Boockvar to respond to the campaign’s filing by Wednesday. The Epoch Times has reached out to Boockvar’s office for comment, but has not yet received a response.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court refused to hear a lawsuit filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin asserting that those states made unconstitutional changes to their election laws. In a 7-2 ruling not to hear the case, the court said Texas lacks standing, a move that drew condemnation from Trump and other conservatives.

Meanwhile, Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) filed a lawsuit against Pennsylvania’s top executives alleging the state changed its mail-in ballot laws in an unconstitutional manner. The U.S. Supreme Court earlier in December denied Kelly’s request for an injunction to prevent election officials in the state from further certifying the Nov. 3, although Kelly said his case is “alive and well.”

“And we are looking, how do we get the court to take on the case for its merits of being constitutional or unconstitutional. That’s all we’re looking at,” Kelly said. “That’s a huge ask, by the way. But we are in the midst of a constitutional crisis right now in our country, and we have to get answers, and we have to get it from the highest court in the land.”
