Kevin McCarthy slams Pelosi, calls for House GOP to reject foreign aid in coronavirus bill
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy accused Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats of "selective hearing" Wednesday night – after President Trump called for Congress to raise coronavirus stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000.
"They’ve conveniently ignored @realDonaldTrump’s call to reexamine tax dollars wasted overseas while so many Americans are struggling at home," McCarthy wrote in a Twitter message. "Republicans will act to put America first."
In an accompanying letter to his fellow Republicans, McCarthy asserted that Republicans had tried to pass a stimulus bill more than 40 times but were unsuccessful until this week because Pelosi "tried to use the American people as leverage to make coronavirus relief contingent on government funding – which includes billions of foreign aid [dollars] at a time when there are urgent needs at home."

GOP Sen. Ben Sasse on Trump pardons: Rotten to the core
Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) issued a terse statement criticizing President Trump for issuing full pardons to 26 more people on Wednesday night, saying: "This is rotten to the core."
Of note: His office set up Sasse's one-line comment by stating that Trump had pardoned "another tranche of felons," specifically naming former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the president's longtime associate Roger Stone, both of whom the statement said "flagrantly and repeatedly violated the law and harmed Americans."
The big picture: Sasse was endorsed by Trump in 2019.

eorgia Republican Senator David Perdue's political advertisement espousing the virtues of a proposed $900 billion COVID-19 economic relief bill that included $600 direct assistance payments for eligible Americans was undercut by President Donald Trump's Tuesday intimation that he would not sign the bill into law.
Congress passed the stimulus package on Monday after weeks of negotiations. On Tuesday, Trump released a video asking for Congress to rework the legislation and provide direct assistance payments of $2,000 for qualifying Americans.
In the ad, a voiceover can be heard criticizing Perdue's Democratic opponent for the Senate seat, Jon Ossoff, for his alleged resistance to providing COVID relief.
"Jon Ossoff opposed past COVID relief and encouraged Democrats to block additional aid for months," the advertisement said. "But Senator Perdue never gave up. Perdue again delivered real meaningful help for Georgians. $900 billion in new COVID relief. Direct checks to Georgians. Critical funding for vaccine distribution. Small businesses, public schools and help for those out of work."

California COVID-19 patient fatally beats 82-year-old hospital roommate for praying, authorities say

A coronavirus patient is accused of beating his 82-year-old hospital roommate to death with an oxygen tank in Lancaster, Calif., last week because he was upset with his Catholic prayers, according to authorities.
The victim shared a two-person room at Antelope Valley Hospital with the suspect, 37-year-old Jesse Martinez. They were both undergoing treatment for COVID-19, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The two did not know each other, but the elderly victim’s praying upset Martinez on the morning of Dec. 17, authorities said. The suspect is accused of grabbing an oxygen tank and pummeling the victim.

New York To Use Sheriff's Deputies To Enforce Quarantine For Those Arriving From U.K.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced an aggressive new measure aimed at keeping a new variant of the coronavirus that is sweeping across London and southern England from spreading to the largest city in the United States.
The mayor said effective immediately, law enforcement officials will be deployed across the city to enforce its 14-day quarantine for anyone flying into New York City from the United Kingdom.
"We cannot take chances with anyone that travels, particularly folks who travel in from the U.K.," de Blasio said during a press briefing Wednesday.
"Given that particular concern, we're going to have sheriff's deputies go to the home or the hotel of every single traveler coming in from the U.K.," de Blasio added.
Like all travelers coming into the city, people from the U.K. will receive an order from the New York City Department of Health directing them to quarantine.
