Yes, I believe it was a blackout. I travel to Rome for work. I have even had a private tour by the Art Curator (ie: Michelangelo’s old job) in the lower catacombs where old Popes were just rotting out in the open on granite slabs. They have parishioners 24/7/365. They NEVER turn out all the lights. There is security everywhere and for no other reason than not being liable for someone falling in the dark, it makes no sense to kill all the lights all night. And yes, I also have walked by under the Pope’s apartment and it is by the left entrance only 50 yards from a public area. He walked across the drive right in front of us and they hadn’t checked our id’s yet at the entry gate. Would be VERY easy for a military team to take him.
