Hungary to slaughter 101,000 hens after bird flu outbreak at single farm

More than 101,000 hens are to be slaughtered at a single farm in Hungary after a laboratory confirmed the presence of avian flu at the site, the country’s food safety authority (NEBIH) said on Thursday.

The site at the center of the latest outbreak is a large-scale egg farm in Roundegyhaza. Bird flu was identified after a significant decrease in production and a rise in the amount of soft-shelled eggs laid raised infection concerns.

While authorities are awaiting further tests, samples confirmed the pathogenic virus on Thursday morning, with veterinary experts swiftly ordering the culling of 101,000 hens, the implementation of a 3km protection zone, and a surveillance zone with a radius of 10km.

The NEBIH doesn’t expect the most recent outbreak to impact foreign trade but, regardless, the agency confirmed that it has been in contact with partner countries, as per international protocol.

The situation in Hungary is the latest reported bird flu incident, following confirmed cases in several countries in recent months, including Lithuania, France, the UK, Germany and Russia, with health officials racing to prevent a wider outbreak throughout Europe’s bird population.

Authorities have taken the drastic culling measures given the risk of poultry flocks coming into contact with wild migratory birds. Livestock farmers have been given guidance to keep their animals inside, as part of their disease control measures.

‘Correction of the day’: CNN says congressman fled office with CROWBAR amid Capitol riot, clarifies it was actually an energy bar

CNN has corrected an article about the Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol last week, after dramatically claiming Rep. Ted Lieu fled his office with a “crowbar” during the incident. He had actually grabbed an energy bar.

In the correction, CNN admitted that a “previous version of this story misstated” that the Democratic congressman had “grabbed a crowbar before leaving his office.”

“He grabbed a ProBar energy bar,” it then clarified.

The correction, of course, drastically changed the tone of the sentence, with most readers having previously assumed that Lieu happened to have a crowbar at hand – and grabbed it for self-defence purposes against violent rioters.

CNN’s blunder hit social media on Thursday, with users questioning how such a large national news outlet could mistake an innocent snack for a potentially deadly weapon.

Dem Congressman Catches COVID After Receiving 2nd Dose Of Vaccine

As it turns out, Republicans aren't the only politicians capable of getting COVID.

Offering the latest reminder that the COVID-19 vaccine isn't 100% effective at stopping people from getting the virus, Democratic Representative Adriano Espaillat of New York announced that he had tested positive even after receiving the second dose of a vaccine. He's now isolating at home.

"I received the second dose of the #COVID19vaccine last week and understand the affects take time," Espaillat said on Twitter Thursday, without identifying which vaccine he got. "I have continued to be tested regularly, wear my mask and follow the recommended guidelines."

Despite all those warnings about a long, dark winter, COVID-linked hospitalizations might have declined over the past month.

The news comes as the CEO Moderna, the maker of one of one of the mRNA COVID vaccines, warned Wednesday that the coronavirus will be around "forever" - despite all that talk about the vaccine bringing back a sense of normalcy to the world.

And Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel isn't the only official and infectious disease expert to have discussed the high likelihood that COVID-19 will become an endemic disease, meaning it will become present in communities at all times, though likely at much lower levels than it is now.

"We are going to live with this virus, we think, forever,” he said during a panel discussion at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference.

As researchers in Ohio discover new mutant strains that likely evolved in the US, the long-term efficacy of vaccines, and the virus's ability to adapt and become more transmissible, or even more deadly, still aren't well understood.

Even as the US accelerates the process of doling out vaccinations, it will still take months to inoculate the entire population.

Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang has officially launched his campaign to become New York City’s mayor, with a flashy video and some very bold promises.

The tech entrepreneur is one of dozens who have filed paperwork to run for office in an attempt to replace current Mayor Bill de Blasio, who will be term-limited out of office.

Among Yang’s promises is a scaled-back universal basic income program, something that gained him attention while he was vying for the presidential nomination from the Democrat Party in the 2020 election.

The Democrat’s plan for New York would give some $2,000 to each of half a million New Yorkers who are identified as being in the greatest need, and the money would be administered through the city’s Human Resources Department. It would cost an estimated $1 billion.
