The crimes committed by POTUS that bring about impeachment and conviction, should be of such nefarious nature, that afterwards criminal indictments should follow.
However, the purpose of impeachment is not to punish, but to remove from office the executive so that criminal charges can be brought against him. If POTUS has done nothing criminal, then how can he be impeached?
Once Trump leaves office, impeachment is moot, and he can be indicted for the crimes committed. In this case, causing an insurrection is the charge. Treason would prohibit Trump ever holding office if convicted. So a proper process and penalty are available to punish the crime.
Again impeachment has a singular purpose, that is to strip the president of his office. After he leaves office, impeachment offers no remedy, nor serves any purpose.
