How does this cohere with what Jesus says? Not much, I think.

But perhaps such an injunction inspires men to FIGHT? (At the right time…) And not shrink as cowards?

So maybe Jesus builds on the idea of men willing to fight, and seeks to guide them better? When and where to fight and what for?

Maybe it is somehow the very surface INCOHERENCE of the Bible that points towards deeper truths? Maybe "prettifying" it up with clever dogmas totally misses the point?
