I am a descendant of Original Settler Pioneers of the mid-west. When I was growing up, we were simply Americans. I had no idea where we 'came from' and didn't care to know. I was an American. This idea of hyphenated (divided loyalty) Americans is foreign to us. Even the term African-American is foreign to us and this relatively modern term was introduced to divide us in the 1980's. The descendents of slaves are Americans. I will forever be concerned with ONE homeland, America. 30% of Americans claim America as their country of Origin on the US Census. That is because we Knew no other country and our Ancestors did NOTHING to preserve any memory or allegience to an 'old homeland' nor did they ever speak of 'where they came from'. We were fully immersed Americans Period, no divided loyalties.
It's just the way it is.
