FANI’S BIO
A Howard Alum (Cum Laude ’92) and Emory Law (’96) grad, Willis’ first four years were within the private sector, representing citizens of Fulton County and surrounding areas in criminal cases, juvenile matters, family law and civil disputes, alike. These experiences ignited Willis’ indelible commitment to SERVE the people, above the solitary focus of efficiently practicing law.
In 2000, Willis served one year as an Assistant Solicitor for the City of Atlanta, and in 2001, made the leap into the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney. After a short 3 years, Willis was put in position to serve in a dual capacity with the Major Case and Cold Case Divisions from 2004-2012.
Willis navigated the mammoth caseload with such poise and brilliance that it garnered a promotion; Deputy District Attorney of the Complex Trial Division. As Deputy, Willis supervised more than 25 Assistant District Attorneys at any given time. With Willis at the helm, her dedicated team of attorneys has prosecuted some of the most egregious, most multi-defendant bearing cases in Fulton County’s history.
Willis’ career, thus far, has been covered extensively by local and national print, as well as broadcast and cable media, Willis teaches hundreds of attorneys the rules of evidence and trial preparation, as a member and trainer for the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia.
Willis actively advocated the passage of a hate crime bill at the 2018 Georgia Legislature and has been recognized as a strong advocate for children, victims of violent crime, the LGBT community, and domestic violence. In 2015, Willis founded For the Love of Carla, a non-profit that promotes the awareness of Sickle Cell Anemia, in honor of a close friend, currently battling the disease.
In conjunction with her other memberships, Willis is often a featured speaker at law events, for organizations, and school programs, where she passionately educates youth on the perils of criminal activity. Willis has been recognized many times in her career. Most recently, she was awarded the Most Powerful and Influential Woman of the Year, in 2018.
In August 2018, Willis returned to private practice by opening The Law Offices of Fani T. Willis, LLC., in Atlanta, Georgia, where she specializes in Criminal Defense, Business/Corporate Litigation, Civil Forfeiture, and Family Law. Also, in 2018, Willis was retained as Counsel for the Judicial Qualifications Commission.
On July 23, 2019, Willis was appointed Pro Tem Chief Municipal Court Judge for the City of South Fulton, a duty she is honored to have been granted. In the wake of the decision to announce her candidacy for Fulton County District Attorney’s race, Willis resigned her position as Chief Municipal Court Judge for the City of South Fulton.
