This is a practice Trump started doing in 2015 when a big backlash occurred after saying: "He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured." Back then among those very angry over this comment were many vets and vet groups.

 

As a vet myself, I agree with the president's comment. Many POWs are not heroes though some are. Upper levels in DoD and the civilian population love to create hero idols out of folks who don't deserve it. McStain has always been a screw up though most don't know this.

 

Trump likes to brand opponents. This turned out to be McStain's brand. Not saying his name has helped sensitive vets from thinking criticisms made apply to a larger group rather than just McStain.
