"Origin of: "Fair Winds and Following Seas."

The origin of the quote "Fair Winds and Following Seas" is unknown. It is often said to have been lifted from a poem, phrase, or literary work, but to the best of this researcher's knowledge, it wasn't. Over the last century at least, the two quotes "Fair Winds" and "Following Seas" have evolved, by usage, into a single phrase which is often used as a nautical blessing.

 

"Fair Winds": The Dictionary of American Regional English defines "Fair Wind" as "safe journey; good fortune." An early example of the phrase's use is in Herman Melville's Moby Dick, published in 1851, where it says near the end "Let me square the yards, while we may, old man, and make a fair wind of it homeward." In other words, let me square the yards (add on all sail) and make a safe journey home.

 

"Following Seas": Defined by Bowditch's American Practical Navigator as "A sea in which the waves move in the general direction of the heading." It further defines "Tide" as "the periodic rise and fall of the water resulting from gravitational interactions between the sun, moon, and earth. . . . the accompanying horizontal movement of the water is part of the same phenomenon." In simple terms: the movement of the water, the waves, and the surface, correspond with the movement of the tide.

 

"Fair Winds and Following Seas" is really two quotes originating from different sources. The two quotes are a nautical phrase of good luck–a blessing as it were–as the person, group, or thing it is said to departs on a voyage in life. It is often used at a "beginning" ceremony such as a commissioning ceremony of a ship or people, as well as in retirement, change of command, or farewell ceremonies."

1967 Israel attacks USS Liberty

 

During the Six-Day War, Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attack the USS Liberty in international waters off Egypt’s Gaza Strip. The intelligence ship, well-marked as an American vessel and only lightly armed, was attacked first by Israeli aircraft that fired napalm and rockets at the ship. The Liberty attempted to radio for assistance, but the Israeli aircraft blocked the transmissions. Eventually, the ship was able to make contact with the U.S. carrier Saratoga, and 12 fighter jets and four tanker planes were dispatched to defend the Liberty. When word of their deployment reached Washington, however, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered them recalled to the carrier, and they never reached the Liberty. Back in the Mediterranean, the initial air raid against the Liberty was over. Nine of the 294 crewmembers were dead and 60 were wounded. Suddenly, the ship was attacked by Israeli torpedo boats, which launched torpedoes and fired artillery at the ship. Under the command of its wounded captain, William L. McGonagle, the Liberty managed to avert four torpedoes, but one struck the ship at the waterline. Heavily damaged, the ship launched three lifeboats, but these were also attacked–a violation of international law. Failing to sink the Liberty, which displaced 10,000 tons, the Israelis finally desisted. In all, 34 Americans were killed and 171 were wounded in the two-hour attack. In the attack’s aftermath, the Liberty managed to limp to a safe port.

 

Israel later apologized for the attack and offered $6.9 million in compensation, claiming that it had mistaken the Liberty for an Egyptian ship. Kentucky - Judge Timothy Nolan Guilty of Human Trafficking After 28 Felonies and 22 Victims

 

Breaking news to report out of Kentucky where former US District Judge Timothy Nolan has been found guilty of human trafficking in a case where he's previously been charged with a whopping 28 felonies including charges of rape, human trafficking, witness tampering, prostitution, unlawful transaction with a minor and sodomy.

 

In total there were 22 victims of Timothy Nolan, each of whom he claimed that he was innocent of the allegations throughout the accusations and the trial.

 

The 71-year-old Campbell County Court Judge Timothy Campbell was handed down the guilty verdict in a courtroom where several of those victims were present, including one who claimed that she was Nolan’s sex-slave, as reported by local NBC affiliate WLWT Channel 5.

 

On May 12th of 2017, Nolan had entered a plea of not guilty to the 28 charges and the claims of the first 22 victims laid out against him, only to later to agree to a plea of guilty on February 8th of 2018 to only 21 of the charges against 19 of the alleged victims.

 

Even more bizarre, at the end of March Nolan withdrew his guilty plea entirely and fired his entire legal team in a shocking courtroom outburst.

 

oday, Nolan has formally issued the guilty plea and handed down a sentence which includes 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

 

Court documents describe Nolan as a grotesque individual who preyed upon innocent women and children, saying that he “used the money, drugs, housing, threats to call the probation office, and violent acts, as means to coerce, deceive and force the women to engage in the commercial sexual activity."

 

It's been 30 years since Nolan sat in a Campbell County Courtroom as a judge, and today he sat to hear his name called from another judge who would seal his fate.

 

At 71-years-old it's most likely that Nolan will die in prison unless by some erratic chance he's able to survive the misery he deserves for his crimes.

 

Most recently, Nolan served on the Campbell County Board of Education, which is even more disturbing depicting such a vile individual in the presence of children.

 

Nolan also ran an unsuccessful campaign in 2016 to unseat Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) from his position prior to the charges being laid out against him.

Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s widely anticipated testimony next week before the House Oversight Committee has been postponed, as the Justice Department IG has pursued new leads in his review of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, according to a congressional letter and sources familiar with the matter.

 

“It is of the utmost importance that your review be as fulsome, complete and unimpeded as possible,” Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman of the committee, wrote in a recent letter to Horowitz obtained by Fox News.

 

Horowitz was scheduled to appear before the committee on May 8. But Gowdy told Horowitz he wants to reschedule his testimony “as close to the day the report is finalized as is practicable.”

 

Gowdy said the decision to postpone is based on “the representations” in an April 23 letter from Horowitz.

The developments suggest Horowitz is still working to complete his review of the FBI and DOJ's handling of the Clinton case. Sources familiar with the review have told Fox News that Horowitz has continued to pursue new leads and witnesses in recent weeks.

 

During a speech Friday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said he expects Horowitz’s review will be finalized soon.

 

“Within the next few weeks, I anticipate that our inspector general will complete a comprehensive, fair and nonpartisan report that answers many questions about how the Department of Justice handled a high-profile investigation during the last presidential campaign,” Rosenstein said. “We will learn from it, and our Department will do better in the future.”

‘We’re the Mujahedeen’: US Marines Commandant Accidentally Declares Holy War

 

US Marine Corps Commandant General Robert Neller shocked observers Wednesday at a US Navy Department briefing when he made the tone-deaf claim that American forces and their Afghan partners are the mujahedeen in Afghanistan now.

 

Afghanistan is currently experiencing a resurgence of violence. During the spring, the country typically sees an uptick in insurgent activity as the winter is often spent harvesting poppies for opium production. However, violence during this year's growing season didn't dwindle as in years past, which experts believe signifies an even more intense fighting season. Already, a slew of terrorist attacks have left many Afghan security forces and civilians dead and civil infrastructure destroyed by bombs.

 

But then after a local Daesh affiliate killed 25 people Monday, including nine journalists and 11 children in Kabul, and separate attacks were conducted elsewhere by the Taliban, US Secretary of Defense James Mattis said, "this is the normal stuff by people who cannot win at the ballot box, so they turn to bombs."

Neller decided to respond to the question of US strategy by reminding everyone that they are the good guys, not the terrorists. "I mean we talk about, you know, the terrorists call themselves, you know, they're the freedom fighters, they're the mujahedeen. They're not, they're criminals. I think the Arabic word is takfiri. They are apostates. They hide behind Islam. They sell drugs. They kill innocent people. That's not what Islam is. The Afghan army and the American, we're the mujahedeen. We're the mujahedeen."

 

Neller also revealed a misunderstanding of the term ‘takfiri.' ‘Takfir' is when a Muslim accuses another Muslim of not being a true Muslim, and a ‘takfiri' is someone who does that. By calling the Taliban apostates, Neller makes himself — if he were Muslim — a takfiri.

 

The United States trained the so-called mujahedeen fighters and equipped them with military gear under the CIA program codenamed Operation Cyclone between 1979 and 1989, both before and amidst the Soviet intervention on behalf of the socialist government, the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

US Military Focus Shifts from Iraq, Syria to Afghanistan, Bombing Report Shows

 

The United States wanted to give their Soviet rivals a situation reminiscent of Vietnam, US President Jimmy Carter's National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski once said. At a March 30, 1979, meeting, a representative of the Department of Defense, Walter B. Slocombe inquired whether there was a value in prolonging the Afghan insurgency or "sucking the Soviets into a Vietnamese quagmire," he asked, according to "From the Shadows," a Cold War book by former CIA officer Robert Gates.

 

"Well, the whole idea was that if the Soviets decided to strike at this tar baby [Afghanistan] we had every interest in making sure that they got stuck," Slocombe said.

 

That year, the CIA began working with contacts in the Pakistani government to meet with insurgents. One former Pakistani military official said he personally connected the CIA to Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, an Afghan warlord who would eventually come to acquire most of the weapons provided to the mujahedeen by the US. Hekmatyar has allied with a number of forces over the years; the US, Taliban, al-Qaeda, and more. Today, he is urging the Taliban to put down their guns and shoot for a political solution.

Not sharing this, half truths (probably not even half is true). Actually allied forces leveled the germany, even thought they already knew that germany lost (check Dresden, they killed half of million civilians). After the war USA and France starved 1 million German soldiers.

Germany had its own national bank (yes, no connection to FED, that's one of the reasons their economy started to boom).

They let the nazi leaders go in excange for tecnology (also probably for one of two nuclear bombs, that USA droped on Japan). Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law that would ban an abortion roughly six weeks into a pregnancy, just as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

 

The bill, which is likely to trigger immediate lawsuits, will make Iowa the most restrictive state for abortions in the country. It requires doctors to conduct an ultrasound on pregnant women to test for a fetal heartbeat and to refuse to provide an abortion if it is detected.

 

The ban will go into effect July 1 if it isn't stopped by the courts.

The Connecticut state Supreme Court has abruptly reversed itself, overturning Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel’s conviction for the murder of his friend Martha Moxley in 1975. The court ruled 4-3 that Skakel’s trial lawyer was so ineffective that it violated his right to a fair trial. Just over a year ago, the same court took the opposite position, ruling by a 4-3 decision that Skakel’s defense was competent, and that he should serve out the remainder of him life sentence.

 

Martha Moxley was beaten to death with a golf club in 1975. In 2003 a jury convicted Michael Skakel of murder. Skakel was Moxley’s 15 year old neighbor in an exclusive Greenwich community at the time of the murder. The trial garnered nationwide attention as Skakel is the cousin of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and nephew of Ethel Skakel Kennedy, the widow of slain Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

 

Skakel was ordered released in 2013 pending a new appeal. Today’s decision likely means that he will remain free, as most believe the state will not retry him on decades-old evidence.
