It gets insane when you realize that 4chan also has dedicated archiving sites that operate similarly. Let's say you miss some posts and a meme or conversation has happened, and you want to figure out where it started. There are archive sites that allow you to go view the thread in its original form prior to deletions or picture removals.

I could see this very easily being something that is that actual honeypot, and not necessarily the live site for the very concerns this 'admin' stated. I think it should be obvious to everyone that trusts the plan why sites like /b/ and the various DW sites exist, now, because honestly none of this made any sense to me for the longest time. But in order for this to work, these websites would have to maintain a look/feel of "business as usual" in order to catch these predators.

thebarchive.com tracks every single thread created on 4chan /b/, and saves them in their entirety. I don't know who's running that place, but if I were a bettin' anon, that's where I'd think the real sting is happening. To elaborate, let's say you are joe anon and you simply browse the contents of the pages. You're probably not in any real danger. The issue comes when you save images to your local HD, or are a thread creator, uploading these things. That's when all the DOJ work is done.

There are lots of kids out there with internet connections, and little johnny or jane anon that has no clue what they're really stepping in isn't going to have his/her name on one of the 200k sealed indictments for looking at underage boobies on the internets. It's the downloading/uploading that flags the connection to the material on the site, and I would assume they'd need to see a pattern of that activity; enough to warrant looking deeper into it.

I remember reading a scifi story about trying to catch a computer spy from the 80's?. Protagonist put a program called mouse trap that was easily found and disabled on the computer. The real program was to measure his typing off of the keyboard. We all have a different rhythm when we type specific words and if you can record it, it can make you identifiable. Don't remember who wrote it or exactly when.

All the news about Mars and the gymnasts got me recalling it.
