After law-enforcement authorities in Sicily and Piedmont seized batches of the AstraZeneca COVID jab, prosecutors in the EU's third-largest economy have launched a manslaughter investigation after a music teacher died just hours after receiving the jab.
According to Italian-language media outlets, 57-year-old Sandro Tognatti died after receiving the jab in his hometown of Biella on Saturday afternoon. He soon developed a high fever, but went to bed anyway, he his wife, Simona Riussi, told the Italian press.
The next morning, Riussi awoke to find Tognatti dead. She called an ambulance, but Tognatti was already dead. Prosecutors in Piedmont officially launched the investigation later in the day. As we mentioned above, prosecutors also seized a batch with nearly 400K jabs in it.
So far, health authorities have insisted that there's no link between the jab and Tognatti's death. Officials said a criminal investigation was launched to be "completely sure" that the man's death "cannot be attributed to the above-mentioned inoculation".
Italy, France, Germany and a handful of other nations temporarily suspended the AstraZeneca vaccine after reports of patients developing deadly blood clots surfaced. Deaths were reported in Austria and elsewhere, which prompted Denmark, Iceland and other nations (as far away as Thailand) to halt the jabs to allow for a brief investigation. AstraZeneca and the EMA (Europe's top regulatory authority) have insisted that there's nothing to suggest a link between the jabs and heightened risk for blood clots, but in a press conference Tuesday morning, the agency promised to investigate.
Among the more than 11M Italians who have already been vaccinated, Italian authorities have documented at least 15 cases of blood clots and 22 cases of pulmonary embolis among those who have received the jabs.

Tanzania’s president, John Magufuli, one of Africa’s most prominent Covid-19 deniers, has died after a two-week absence from public life that prompted speculation that he had contracted the disease.
Magufuli’s death was announced on Wednesday by the country’s vice-president, Samia Suluhu, who said the president died of heart failure. He was 61.
“The president of the United Republic of Tanzania, the honourable Dr John Pombe Joseph Magufuli … [has] died of a heart condition, at hospital Mzena in Dar es Salaam, where he was receiving treatment,” she said on state broadcaster TBC.
Magufuli, a divisive figure who won a second term in October in an election marred by violence and allegations of fraud, had not been seen in public since 27 February, leading many to believe that he was sick and possibly incapacitated. He had a history of heart problems and wore a pacemaker.
But the number of deaths of people experiencing breathing problems reportedly grew and, earlier this month, the US embassy warned of a significant increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Tanzania since January. Days later, the presidency announced the death of John Kijazi, Magufuli’s chief secretary.
Soon after, the death was announced of the vice-president of the semi-autonomous island region of Zanzibar, whose political party had earlier reported that he had Covid-19.
Evidence suggests Tanzania was hit hard by a recent surge of infections across southern and parts of eastern Africa brought on by the spread of a new and more transmissible variant of the virus from South Africa. COVID-19 disproportionately affects men compared with women, raising the possibility that a hormone like progesterone may improve clinical outcomes for certain hospitalized men with the disease. New research from Cedars-Sinai published online in the journal Chest supports this hypothesis.
The pilot clinical trial, involving 40 men, is believed to be the first published study to use progesterone to treat male COVID-19 patients whose lung functions have been compromised by the coronavirus. While the findings are promising, larger clinical trials are needed to establish the potential of this experimental therapy, the investigators said.
The study was prompted by multiple reports that men are at higher risk of mortality and severe illness from COVID-19 than are women, according to Sara Ghandehari, MD, director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation in the Women’s Guild Lung Institute at Cedars-Sinai and principal investigator for the trial….
Results:
The study showed that, compared with the control group, patients in the group treated with progesterone scored a median 1.5 points higher on a standard seven-point scale of clinical status after seven days. The scale ranged from a high of 7 ("not hospitalized, no limitations on activities") to 1 ("death").

Study Limitations:
The sample size was relatively small and involved mainly white, Hispanic and obese patients with a moderate burden of comorbidities, which increase the risk for worse outcomes. Further, although the clinical trial was randomized and controlled, it was unblinded.

AstraZeneca Admits Vaccine Efficacy Based On "Interim" Data, Vows To Release Update Within 48 Hours

Update (0800ET): As the media (and the rest of the world) tries to figure out what exactly is going on with the AstraZeneca trial data, and whether the vaccine's ability to protect the population from COVID truly does outweigh the risks, the company has just released a statement promising to release up-to-date results from the final phase of the trial within 48 hours.
AZ said yesterday's trial conclusions were based on an "interim analysis" with all data received by the cutoff date of Feb. 17. Then, it promised to "immediately engage with the independent data safety monitoring board to share our primary analysis with the most up to date efficacy data." Results of this primary analysis will be available within 2 days.
The numbers published yesterday were based on a pre-specified interim analysis with a data cut-off of 17 February.
We have reviewed the preliminary assessment of the primary analysis and the results were consistent with the interim analysis. We are now completing the validation of the statistical analysis.
We will immediately engage with the independent data safety monitoring board (DSMB) to share our primary analysis with the most up to date efficacy data.
We intend to issue results of the primary analysis within 48 hours.
More academics complained about the optics of the situation.
"The last thing this vaccine needs is more concern when we kind of thought we were at that point now where we would put to bed all the other concerns," said Paul Griffin, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, who is conducting clinical studies in Australia on four Covid-19 vaccine candidates.
And reporters complained that AstraZeneca's explanation, and the whole back-and-forth between Astra and the NIH, seemed bizarre.

The efficacy rate in the US trial was stronger than the 70% figure AstraZeneca reported from an earlier study. But those data were an average of different readings (62% and 90%) from two separate arms of the study. Bottom line: Whatever the 'final' efficacy number is, it should probably be taken with a grain of salt.
To that point, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nominal head of the NIAID, insisted that, in all likelihood, the AstraZeneca jab is "very likely a very good" vaccine. This is presumably just another in a seemingly endless stream of hiccups.

Translation: the US will follow through with plans to approve the AstraZeneca jab (after a notably lengthy delay) - but turn around and give all the AZ jabs it has on hand to Mexico and other governments.
Pretty soon, maybe AstraZeneca can stop blaming European governments for stoking skepticism about the company's COVID jab, and start blaming the US (or maybe the drugmaking giant might consider accepting some responsibility, considering the reaction to rare blood clots isn't the first safety issue to mar the jabs reputation).
One day after proclaiming to the world that an extremely thorough and credible study based in the US (but carried out both in the US and across South America) had shown its jab to be 79% effective at preventing COVID (and 100% effective at preventing serious cases of the virus-caused disease) US officials are slamming the drug company and the data for possibly misrepresenting the vaccine's efficacy.

I’ve got some good news for a change — we have a major victory in our lawsuit against the cancel culture mob. I think we’ve found a way, at least in Canada, and probably in the United Kingdom and Australia — to use the law to stop deplatforming.
It took eighteen months, but I think it’s really working; we’ve proven the concept.
Let me show you the results, and then let me tell you how we did it — and how you might be able to, also.
I now have a signed apology from the owner of two theatres that cancelled two book signings I had scheduled back in October of 2019 for my book about Justin Trudeau called The Libranos: What the media won’t tell you about Justin Trudeau’s corruption.
I was scheduled to do a book launch in Edmonton and then in Calgary, at these great independent movie theatres.
So I signed a contract with these theatres do to my book signings there, and I paid the whole rental fee in advance, and I was excited about it.
But then, about a week before my book launch, a left-wing Twitter mob started threatening the theatre owner — they wanted to cancel my book-signing!
So I called up the theatre owner to reassure him, and I told him I’d hire some private security at my own expense just to make sure there was no problem and to put him at ease.
The owner, Mike Brar, told me in thirty years he had never cancelled a movie and he didn’t expect to start now.
But finally, when the day of the book signing came, and we all showed up — the theatre doors were locked and were kept us out.
So I did my book launch on the street outside!
Well, fast forward to today.
Let me read his letter to me, which you can find on the website StopDeplatforming.com.
Mike: apology accepted. And I really think he means it. I just don’t think he had ever been treated that way by the mob. You know how cruel people can be on the Internet.
Leftists know that wouldn’t work on me. So they picked on an immigrant entrepreneur, and scared him to death. What a bunch of bullies.
What was so gross is that some of the mob were professors and staff at the University of Alberta. How awful is that — professors banning book launches. That’s disgraceful, frankly.
But like I say — what could I do? The doors were closed; the contract wasn’t honoured.
Now, as you can sort of tell, I sued Mike Brar and the two theatres for breach of contract. I had paid him in advance, he took my money and he scuppered the whole evening. I don’t like it, but I can understand it, and I really do accept his apology and the other parts of the settlement that I’m not at liberty to discuss.
But what about the real bad guys here — the mob itself?
Even Mike's own staff, Michael Corless and Jordon Thompson — they pressured him to rip up his contract with me. Do they really get to walk away from this? Does the Twitter mob? Do those woke professors?
No. And this is the lesson I want to share with you. This is how I fought back.

Parler Just Flipped Big Tech's Jan 6th Conspiracy Theory On Its Head

In the days after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Big Tech moved against a conservative alternative social media platform, Parler, based on the premise that the rioters has used Parler to plan the attack on the Capitol and that Parler had failed in its responsibility to prevent such coordination. Based on this narrative, Apple and Google removed Parler from their app stores and Amazon removed Parler’s internet hosting. Yet on Thursday, Parler flipped the narrative on its head.
On Thursday, Parler sent a response to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform’s request for documents regarding the riot, the company explained in a press release. In that response, Parler revealed that it had “proactively developed an open line of communication with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the fall of 2020 and referred violent content and incitement from Parler’s platform over 50 times before January 6th. Parler also warned the FBI about specific threats of violence being planned for the events at the Capitol on January 6th.”
In its letter, Parler said that the company recognizes “legal limits to free speech” and that its policies “have always prohibited threats of violence and incitement on its platform.”
The letter details Parler’s efforts “to flag and remove unlawful speech from its platform that was not protected by the First Amendment.” It also notes that of the 270 charging documents filed by the Department of Justice, 80 percent of social media references involved Big Tech platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. “Only 5% referred to Parler.”
The letter goes on to explain that Parler accumulated over 15 million users by January 2021 and its app was the most downloaded app at the Apple App Store and the Google U.S. Play Store on January 8, 2021.
The company’s press release connected the dots.
“Big Tech rivals Facebook and Twitter saw Parler as a viable threat and ganged up with Amazon and others to de-platform and destroy the Company. Big Tech has been effectively scapegoating Parler for the riots at the Capitol, but Parler’s revelations today show that the Company acted responsibly to try and stop the violence at the Capitol on January 6th,” the press release concluded.
Along with the letter and the press release, Parler provided the emails alerting the FBI to incitements to violence on Parler’s social media platform. The company repeatedly warned its FBI contact about the potential for violence on January 6.
In one email, Parler forwarded a message from a user who called for “an armed force of American Patriots 150,000… prepared to react to the congressional events of January 6th … And follow what the Declaration of Independence has dictated to do in situations of absolute despotism.”
“One more from same account. More where this came from. Concerned about Wednesday,” a Parler employee wrote to the FBI contact on January 2, the Saturday before the events of Wednesday, January 6.
Contrary to the Big Tech narrative, Parler did its due diligence and reported threats of violence to the FBI in advance of the Capitol riot. These actions, coupled with the fact that Parler only appeared in 5 percent of the DOJ’s charging documents, completely flips the Big Tech narrative on its head. The Capitol rioters did coordinate on Parler, in part, but they also did so on other social media platforms.
Parler was not negligent in its duty to remove incitements to violence, as Amazon, Apple, and Google claimed. In fact, it removed those incitements and altered the FBI about them. Parler may not have been perfect in this regard, but the company had been proactive before the Capitol riot.

WHO Covid-19 report: New Zealand shuts its eyes to appease China

New Zealand has refused to stand with Australia and its other Five Eyes partners to speak out against a much-criticised World Health Organisation investigation into the origins of COVID in China, as it tries to escape Beijing’s wrath.
The shortcomings of the investigation, which has been highly sensitive in China, were immediately pointed out in joint statements released by the four other Five Eyes nations — the US, Britain, Canada and Australia — as well as Japan, South Korea and eight other countries, and in a separate statement by the EU.
Even WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus himself, who has been criticised for being too conciliatory to Beijing during the pandemic, acknowledged data had been withheld from the investigation team.
“In my discussions with the team they expressed the difficulties they encountered in accessing raw data,” Mr Tedros said at a press conference, which was seemingly censored on the Chinese internet on Wednesday.
“I expect future collaborative studies to include more timely and comprehensive data sharing,” the WHO chief said.
But in Wellington, the Ardern government said it needed more time before it would comment on the report, even though it has been circulating among WHO members for days.
“Our technical experts are currently analysing the report,” a spokeswoman for New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta told The Australian.
“As this is a scientific report, we want to make sure we understand the science before making any comment,” she said.
While Australia’s relationship with China has imploded during the pandemic, New Zealand has become Beijing’s favourite member of the Five Eyes group.
Wellington was rewarded in January with an upgrade in its free trade agreement with China. That was signed as Beijing continued a trade retaliation campaign on more than $20bn worth of Australian exports aimed at punishing the Morrison government for calling for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus without forewarning Xi Jinping’s administration.
Tony Browne, a former New Zealand ambassador to China, said the Ardern government’s absence from the joint statement was not unexpected.
Noting that he did not want to sound critical of Australia’s approach, the retired diplomat said the Morrison government’s call for an inquiry was “framed in terms that were seen as provocative and even hostile in Beijing”.
“The way that the demand was outlined was seen by China as going beyond health into the political,” he told The Australian.
“Calling China into account for the nature of its political management of the issue might sound like a good thing to do, but you know for certain it’s not going to go anywhere in terms of any sort of co-operative involvement from China,” he said.
The WHO team in their report said they were unable to conclude where or how the virus began spreading, although they believe it most likely jumped from a bat or other animal host to a human.

A statement signed by the US, Australia and 12 other countries said it was critical the WHO team be given “full access” so they could accurately study the origins of the coronavirus.
The EU statement said the report was a “helpful first step”, while regretting the late start of the study and the limited availability of early samples and related data.
A theory pushed by the Trump administration that the coronavirus emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan was described as the least likely hypothesis, but Tedros acknowledged the WHO team said that theory required further study.
“Further data and studies will be needed to reach more robust conclusions,” he said.
China’s foreign ministry said Beijing had provided “full co-operation” to the WHO team and then repeated a conspiracy theory about the coronavirus leaking from a military lab in America.
“There is still a big question mark over the lab at Fort Detrick,” the foreign ministry spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile, China’s state-controlled Global Times reported that the virus may have arrived in Wuhan on frozen food brought by foreign participants at the October 2019 Military World Games, a theory with no supporting evidence in the report.

Microsoft is reportedly proposing a method to generate cryptocurrency by "monitoring people's brain activity and other personal biometric data," according to a new report in The Independent.
The company has reportedly filed for a patent called "Cryptocurrency System Using Body Activity Data" which details how a person could attach sensors to their body to "earn" cryptocurrency through mining. Microsoft is apparently not just satisfied with computers doing the crypto mining, they are pushing for mining via a "human body activity associated with a task".
The patent states: "For example, a brain wave or body heat emitted from the user when the user performs the task provided by an information service provider, such as viewing an advertisement or using certain internet services, can be used in the mining process."
It continues: "Instead of massive computation work required by some conventional cryptocurrency systems, data generated based on the body activity of the user can be proof-of-work, and therefore, a user can solve the computationally difficult problem unconsciously."
Such a system would require "hooking up" a device to sensors on the body that "detect the activity required of the user to generate the cryptocurrency." The report says that "body fluid flow" and "organ activity and movement" are two such body functions, along with brain waves and body heat, that could be monitored.
The patent lists 28 concepts for using such a system to mine for cryptocurrency.

A Mississippi man remains in critical condition, can’t walk, talk and is paralyzed on one side of his body after suffering a stroke hours after being vaccinated with Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccine. Family believes “without a doubt” the vaccine caused the stroke.
A healthy 43-year old man in Mississippi suffered a stroke hours after being vaccinated with Johnson and Johnson’s (J&J) COVID vaccine. Brad Malagarie, father of seven, had received the vaccine a little after Noon and was found unresponsive by co-workers at his desk, WSAZ News Channel 3 reported.
“They called me and said he had that vaccine and something is wrong, we think it’s a stroke,” said Celeste Foster O’Keefe, Malagarie’s aunt and boss.
Malagarie was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a stroke after a blood clot had lodged in his left middle cerebral artery. O’Keefe said the family believes without a doubt that the vaccine caused the stroke.
“He’s a young, healthy 43-year-old, and I immediately thought it, and I said be sure to tell the doctors he took that J & J vaccine and that, to me, is what caused his stroke,” she told WSAZ.
O’Keefe said her nephew’s only health issue before the vaccine was high blood pressure, which was controlled with medication. One week after receiving the vaccine Malagarie remains hospitalized at Ochsner’s Medical Center in New Orleans and is in critical, but stable condition.
“He can’t talk now and he can’t walk. He’s paralyzed on the right side. He knows who we are and he will just cry when he sees us,” O’Keefe said.
Doctors don’t know Malagarie’s prognosis for recovery yet but said it will likely take at least a year of rehab after he leaves the hospital, the local TV station said.
On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) paused J&J’s vaccine after rare blood clots were reported in those recently vaccinated.
All six reported cases in the U.S. occurred among women aged 18-48 with symptoms developing six to 13 days after vaccination, according to a statement issued by the FDA and CDC.
One vaccine recipient died and her death is being investigated by the CDC, Virginia state officials said in a statement Tuesday. Another woman is in critical condition. A CDC official said two of the six patients have been discharged and three remain hospitalized.
Wednesday, J&J disclosed two more cases of blood clots — one that occurred in a 25 year-old-man who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage during a clinical trial and another case of deep-vein-thrombosis in a 59-year-old woman.
According to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System or VAERS, 49 reports of blood coagulation disorders from the J&J vaccine have been reported through April 1 and 972 reports from all three vaccines combined, including Pfizer and Moderna through April 1.
The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices met Wednesday and decided to postpone a vote on whether to lift the pause on the J&J’s COVID vaccine, effectively extending the pause pending further analysis of data relating to blood clots in people who received the vaccine. The committee said they would meet again in one week to 10 days to vote on whether or not to lift the pause.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, has sent a clear signal that the country will chart a more independent foreign policy, directly criticising efforts to pressure China through the Five Eyes intelligence sharing group.
The comments are likely to further inflame tensions in New Zealand's relationship with Australia, which believes the Ardern government is undermining collective attempts to push back against increasingly aggressive behaviour from Beijing.
The Five Eyes group – which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand – was originally formed as an intelligence sharing network but has expanded its scope in the past few years.
Ms Mahuta today said the group should focus on intelligence.
"That's a matter we have raised with Five Eyes partners. We are uncomfortable with expanding the remit of the Five Eyes relationship," she said.
"We would much rather prefer to look for multilateral opportunities to express our interests on a number of issues."
The comments come only days before Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne visits New Zealand for formal talks with Ms Mahuta and New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern.
Beijing has responded furiously to recent joint statements from the Five Eyes group criticising crackdowns on Hong Kong and Xinjiang, and threatened reprisals.
In the last six months New Zealand has joined many of those statements, but has been conspicuously absent from some.
Tensions have also flared between Australia and New Zealand over how to handle Beijing, although most of the frustrations have been kept behind closed doors.
Earlier this year New Zealand's Trade Minister, Damien O'Connor, irritated Australian ministers and officials after suggesting that the Morrison government should show China more "respect" in order to avoid campaigns of economic punishment.
Ms Mahuta has not held back from criticising China — including over its treatment of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang – since taking over the role.
But the Foreign Minister said Five Eyes had a "specific purpose" and New Zealand would issue its own statements – or look to "other partners" in the region – when it wanted to lay out its position.
"New Zealand has been very clear, certainly in this term since we've held the portfolio, not to invoke the Five Eyes as the first point of contact on messaging out on a range of issues," she said.
"They really exist outside of the remit of the Five Eyes. We don't favour that type of approach and have expressed that to Five Eyes partners."
The Foreign Minister's comments also cast doubt on moves to expand the diplomatic architecture of Five Eyes.
In recent years ministers from all five countries across several different portfolios – including defence, treasury and foreign affairs – have held Five Eyes meetings.
Minister outlines new approach to China
Ms Mahuta made the comments after giving a major speech designed to reframe New Zealand's approach to its relationship with China.
She said New Zealand wanted to diversify its exports in order to reduce its dependence on China, saying "in terms of thinking about long-term economic resilience … there is value in diversity".
"Resting our trade relationship on just one country, long term, is probably not the way we should be thinking about things," she said.
She said New Zealand wanted mutually respectful ties with China, comparing the relationship to a "dragon and taniwha", in reference to a water-dwelling serpent in Maori mythology.
The Foreign Minister stressed the two countries would not always agree, but needed to deal with each other fairly and honestly.
"There are some things on which New Zealand and China do not, cannot, and will not, agree," Ms Mahuta said.
"It is important to acknowledge this, and to stay true to ourselves, as we seek to manage our disagreements mindful that tikanga [culture, values or customs] or underpinning how we relate to each other must be respected."
She also issued a thinly veiled warning about rising debt levels in the Pacific, although she did not single out China.
"It's no secret there's a significant level of economic vulnerability across the Pacific," she said.
"New Zealand certainty invests in the Pacific … by way of grants, not loans."
"If we're really focused on regional stability and opportunity we need to tackle this particular challenge. I hope that conversation can take place with those who seek to invest in the region."

In a virtual two-day climate summit hosted by President Joe Biden on Earth Day, world leaders attempted to outdo each other on promises and boasts on tackling climate change. Activist Greta Thunberg warned ahead of the event that world leaders would bring “bullsh*t” to the summit.
As detailed by Sky News, Biden used the two-day climate summit to announce a new target of halving carbon emissions by 2030. Other world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, promised to do so in a “much shorter time span.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin bragged about the greater extent of the actions Russia plans to take in tackling climate change. The United Kingdom’s Boris Johnson promised to do as much as the United States. India’s Narendra Modi bragged that India’s carbon footprint is 60 per cent lower than the global average.
Compared with 2005 levels, the United States has pledged to reduce emissions by upwards of 50 per cent by 2030, US climate envoy John Kerry said. Kerry says the goal previously announced by Biden is a more than reasonable target.
"Will we probably wind up exceeding it? I suspect yes," he said. "I'm generally optimistic because so much is beginning to happen."
Efforts to cut America’s carbon emissions include the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and a reduction of emissions caused by manufacturing and power consumption, which are largely driven by the use of fossil fuels in the U.S. The move towards a carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative U.S. economy will be highly contingent on the adoption of renewable energy sources.
Canada has pledged to follow America’s lead by reducing carbon emissions by 40 to 45 per cent compared to 2005 levels by 2030.
In contrast, the U.K. is measuring its target against 1990 levels, a baseline most commonly used by the United Nations — meaning that the U.K. is expected to reduce its carbon emissions by even greater levels than its North American counterparts. Boris Johnson boasted that emissions in the U.K. will be cut by 78 per cent by 2035.
As noted by Sky News, each representative present attempted to try and one-up each other with boasts on their efforts to “build back better.” Notably, Johnson used phrases like “Saudi Arabia of wind” and “First country to legislate for net-zero.”

The “public health policies” allegedly in place to fight Covid19 are being rebranded as “saving the planet”.
Yesterday was Earth Day. The traditional day environmental hashtags temporarily trend across all social media sites. This year was no different, with the exception of the stronger than usual whiff of agenda.
The narrative of the “deadly viral pandemic” is slowly losing momentum. Whether this is through the public having “post viral fatigue”(as it were), or a deliberate shift in media talking points is unclear. But there’s certainly less energy in the story than at this time last year.
That said, it’s also perfectly clear that governments around the world are in no mood to give up their newly acquired “emergency powers”, and that alleged “anti-covid measures” are not going away anytime soon.
Especially lockdowns, which are being freshly marketed as “good for the planet”.
The narrative that locking down the public was “helping the Earth heal” actually dates back to last March, when it was reported all across the world news that only a few weeks of lockdown had cleared up the water in Venician canals so much there were dolphins swimming through the city.
This story later proved to be completely untrue, but that didn’t stop dozens of outlets from picking up the story and running with it.
At various times in the intervening year, Covid has been sold as a having an environmental silver-lining. Including potentially “saving the planet”.

Singer Matiu Walters grinned as he gazed out over 50,000 damp but delirious fans and said those magic words: "So, what's up Eden Park?"
While much of the world remains hunkered down, the band Six60 has been playing to huge crowds in New Zealand, where social distancing isn't required after the nation stamped out the coronavirus. The band's tour finale on Saturday night was billed as the largest concert in the world since the pandemic began.
Equally momentous for a band which met while playing rugby at university was getting to play the first concert ever held at the storied Eden Park rugby stadium. And finding themselves at the apex of world music came as a twist for Six60, which has enjoyed unparalleled success in New Zealand but whose forays abroad have ended without the breakthroughs they sought.
Saturday's set by the five-piece band included powerful cameos by military musicians ahead of the nation honoring its war dead on Sunday, and Maori performers who stretched across the stage while the band switched to singing in the Indigenous language.
One fan, Lucy Clumpas, found it a surreal experience to be surrounded by so many people after she spent last year living through endless lockdowns in Britain.
"It's very important for us as humans to be able to get together and sing the same songs together," she said. "It makes us feel like we're part of something,"
Walters, the lead singer, said they desperately want their musician friends around the world to be able to play live shows again.
"We know what it's like to be in lockdown. It sucked. And we didn't know if we'd be able to play gigs again," he said in an interview before the show. "But we are fortunate, for a few reasons, here in New Zealand."
Guitarist Ji Fraser said the reception they received while on the road for their summer tour had been incredible.
"It was amazing to see how fanatical people were, and excited about being out and seeing live music, and seeing something to drag them out of a long, brutal year," he said. "It was very special."
Walters said they did worry that something could have gone wrong — that their gigs could have turned into super-spreader events. But he said there was not much to do other than play by the rules and follow the government guidelines.
The band formed 13 years ago after they started jamming in their rugby changing rooms, making their concert at the hallowed ground of the nation's All Blacks rugby team feel like completing a circle.
The band had pushed for changes to civic rules to allow concerts at Eden Park, but not all the neighbors were happy.
One who objected was former Prime Minister Helen Clark, who said at the time that the concerts would represent a "home invasion" of noise.
"But the people wanted it. And the people spoke," Walters said. The singer added that Clark would have been welcomed at the concert. "Six60 is for everyone. And maybe if she came and enjoyed herself, she'd have a change of heart."

Biggs asks Biden to suspend John Kerry’s security clearance
After calls for former Secretary of State and Biden administration official John Kerry’s resignation continue, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) penned a letter on Tuesday to President Biden, demanding that he suspend Kerry’s security clearance. This comes after the reported revelation that Kerry knew about covert Israeli attacks in Syria.
The Arizona congressman called for the suspension until a full investigation can be completed. “I urge you to immediately suspend Special Envoy John Kerry’s security clearance and prevent him from participating in any classified briefings until the full nature of his interactions with the Islamic Republic of Iran are investigated,” Biggs wrote.

New Zealand's back-and-forth attitude on whether to call China's Xinjiang policy "genocide" showed that it is struggling to act in line with its "Western identity" while carefully weighing its own interests with China, Chinese experts said.
The New Zealand Parliament unanimously voted for a motion on Wednesday to express grave concern at "severe human rights abuses" against Uygurs in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, calling for the New Zealand government to work with international organizations and partners to end those abuses with all relevant instruments, according to the New Zealand Herald.
However, due to pressure from the Labour Party, the term "genocide" was removed before it was put forward, and some observers saw the subtle changing attitude as signaling much more independence in the country's China policy compared to Australia.
"We should not count on New Zealand to completely drop the Western-led rhetoric on the Xinjiang issue, given the mounting pressure from the US and other major powers. In addition to misleading storytelling about China's Xinjiang, New Zealand is more or less influenced by the overall environment," Chen Hong, a professor and director of the Australian Studies Center at the East China Normal University, told the Global Times on Thursday.
"Such independence has been driving it to strike a balance amid geopolitical wrestling, reflecting its more pragmatic attitude, as it knows where the bottom line is," Chen said.
Unlike its close neighbor Australia, which has taken a hysterically harsh stance toward China, New Zealand has also maintained a certain distance from Five Eyes by disagreeing over the role of the alliance. Its foreign minister, Nanaia Mahuta, expressed some concerns over whether the framework needs to be invoked every time on every issue, especially on human rights issues, according to media reports. Some reports also raised questions such as why New Zealand is not on the same page as its allies in confronting China.
"It's unlikely that New Zealand will take the same aggressive moves as Australia has, which could also be much smarter," Chen said.
The Chinese Embassy in New Zealand voiced opposition on Thursday to the motion by saying that despite the truth and facts in Xinjiang, the parliament made groundless accusations against China over human rights abuses and grossly interfered in China's internal affairs.

Mr Wang also did not mention the motion the New Zealand parliament passed this week — with Ms Ardern’s clear support — that unanimously declared that “severe human rights abuses” were occurring in Xinjiang.
Since Australia’s relationship with China imploded a year ago, Beijing has presented New Zealand as an example of a well-behaving wealthy country.
China’s state-controlled media gleefully reported comments by New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta last month that Wellington was uneasy about the increased usage of the Five Eyes intelligence grouping as a vehicle for making statements critical of Beijing. Ms Ardern quickly clarified New Zealand’s commitment to the intelligence grouping with Australia, the US, Britain and Canada.
In a speech in Auckland on Monday in front of a business crowd, Ms Ardern spoke directly about the increasing difficulties in New Zealand’s relationship with the Xi administration.
“It will not have escaped the attention of anyone here that as China’s role in the world grows and changes, the differences between our systems — and the interests and values that shape those systems — are becoming harder to reconcile,” she told the China Business Summit.
“Managing the relationship is not always going to be easy and there can be no guarantees.”
David Capie, director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at Wellington’s Victoria University, said the “key takeaway” from the speech was a clear message to New Zealand’s business community.
“Look across the Tasman. As you think about going into business in China, you need to be aware of the risks as well as the opportunities,” he told The Weekend Australian.
Beijing has praised New Zealand as a model partner as sanctions have been whacked on more than $20bn of Australian exports and China’s media and foreign ministry have thundered about Canberra.
That may have limited Beijing’s criticism this week of the forthright language Ms Ardern used on China and the motion in Wellington condemning the treatment of Uighur people in Xinjiang.
“To present New Zealand as the right kind of partner and then turn around and flay it publicly and put it in the freezer is a little hard to reconcile,” Mr Capie said.
Meanwhile, the anger at the Morrison government continued as Beijing justified its tit-for-tat scuttling of a high-level economic and trade dialogue after Canberra tore up Victoria’s Belt and Road agreement.
“We urge the Australian side to cast aside the Cold-War mentality and ideological bias, view China’s development and China-Australia co-operation in a truly objective light, return to the rational track without further delay and correct its mistakes,” Mr Wang said.
“It should stop the insane suppression targeting China-Australia co-operation, stop politicising and stigmatising normal exchange and stop going further down the wrong path.”

A deputy to Spain's far-right Vox Party was locked out of his Twitter account last week for claiming that "a man cannot get pregnant".
Francisco José Contreras was banned from his account for 12 hours, according to Fox News, for making the argument and backing it up by stating men have "no uterus or eggs."
He was making the comments in response to an article about a transgender male who announced that they had "given birth" to a baby girl and were now a father.
Contreras said on Facebook that he was told by Twitter he had violated its policies on hate speech for his remarks. He also posted a diagram to illustrate his point.
He wrote on Facebook: "The hateful tweet (which I was forced to delete) was one that said: ′A man cannot get pregnant. A man has no womb or eggs'. You can see this is already fascist biology. Next time I'll try 2 + 2 = 4."
Twitter said that he violated the company's policy "against material that threatens, harasses, or fosters violence against other people on the basis of their race, ethnic origin, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religion, age, disability or disease."
The network warned: "Keep in mind that repeated defaults may lead to permanent suspension of your account. Go to Twitter now to fix the problem with your account."
Supporters of Contreras have started using the #AManCannotBePregnant hashtag to show support for him. Contreras concluded: "We will not yield to Twitter imposing a twisted (and anthropologically wrong) worldview. We will continue to speak the truth about human nature. Biological truth should not be regarded as ‘hate speech’. It’s biology, not bigotry."

Taiwanese Citizen Sentenced for Illegal Exports of Military and Dual-Use Items to Iran

Update: Mehrdad Ansari, a co-defendant in the case, was extradited from the Republic of Georgia to the United States in March 2020. In May 2021, a jury in the Western District of Texas convicted him of one count of conspiracy to violate the Iranian Transaction Regulations, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and two counts of aiding and abetting the making of false statements. He will be sentenced in September 2021. Another co-defendant, Mehrdad Foomani, remains at large.
Foomani used companies in Iran (Morvarid Sargh Co Ltd), Hong Kong (Panda Semiconductor, Foang Tech Inc), and China (Ninehead Bird Semiconductor) to illicitly obtain military-sensitive items from the United States for Iran. Ansari supported the operation by transshipping the illicit cargo through Gulf Gate Sea Cargo LLC, his company in the United Arab Emirates. The shipments and attempted shipments, valued at over $2.6 million, took place between October 2007 and June 2011.

A U.S. district court in Texas sentenced Taiwanese citizen Susan Yip (a.k.a. Susan Yeh) to two years in federal prison on October 24, 2012, for her role in shipping thousands of U.S.-origin military and dual-use parts from the United States to Iran, using front companies in the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. According to court documents, Yip worked with Iranian citizen Mehrdad "Frank" Foomani and UAE citizen Merdad Ansari, who were also indicted but remain at large.
Yip acted as a broker in order to obtain U.S. origin goods destined for Iranian companies run by Foomani, including Sazgan Ertebat Co. Ltd. and Morvarid Shargh Co. Ltd. She used her companies in Taiwan (Hivocal Technology Company Ltd., Enrich Ever Technologies Co. Ltd., and Kuang-Su Corporation) and in Hong Kong (Infinity Wise Technology, Well Smart (HK) Technology, Pinky Trading Co. Ltd., and Wise Smart (HK) Electronics Limited) to procure and attempt to procure goods from the United States. In some cases, the goods were transshipped via Ansari's UAE-based Gulf Gate Sea Cargo L.L.C.
Yip, Ansari, and Ansari allegedly took part in 599 transactions with 63 different U.S. companies, for items with potential applications in nuclear weapons, missile guidance, secure radio communications, electronic warfare, radio jamming, and radar warning and surveillance systems, including vibration test systems, microwave absorbers, spectrum analyzers, precision amplifiers, and oscillators.
