‘South Park’ Mocks QAnon, Vaccine Line-Cutters in Hourlong “Vaccination Special”

can't keep our name out they mouth

South Park returned early on Wednesday with an hourlong “Vaccination Special,” which tackled an array of headlines from the past several months that show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone just had to address before the series’ usual fall run.

The South ParQ: Vaccination Special (simulcast on MTV2 ) marked the second hourlong special that the long-running Comedy Central show has produced. And just like the first “Pandemic Special” last fall, the episode was created remotely.

From the rush of those anxious to get the COVID-19 vaccination (Walgreens is treated as a popular nightclub) and line-cutters to Mr. Garrsion finally returning as himself after four years of playing a pseudo-Trump character, the stand-alone special packed plenty of foul-mouthed, outrageous punch. Garrison’s journey to return to his old self was among the primary storylines.

The episode opened with a disclaimer that stated there would be negative depictions and mistreatment of people and cultures, a note mocking disclaimers that have been added to classic films and TV shows on streaming services, such as Disney+ and HBO Max.

The special mocked the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory, turning members into tutors for South Park Elementary students, thereby making the children “Lil’ Qties.” Parker and Stone also poked fun at themselves as “Hollywood elite” via a picture of their cult favorite, BASEketball.

The show, like most productions, was forced to go on hiatus due to the pandemic, which meant for the first time in 23 years, there was not a full season of South Park. It is unclear if the show is returning for its normal 10-episode run this fall.

In 2019, South Park was renewed through 2022. The show’s entire library moved from Hulu to HBO Max last year in a deal reportedly worth $500 million.
