used to be that in order to vote, you had to own land. owning land made one an elector. i.e. it was a popular vote by electors (landowners). the current abstraction (muh popular vote, for electors pledged to eventually vote for a candidate) is more recent fuckery, occurred between 1871 (end of civil war, 14th amendment) and the Fed tontine + the bankruptcy.
